Tigers 2017-2018 Off Season Thread

Bad baseball us unwatchable in my opinion. If I thought Avila and his staff could pull off a Astros and win something in a few years it would be exciting but I really have no faith in AA.

Bad hockey is worse, IMO.

Baseball has walks, sacflies, bunts, steals, singles, doubles, triples, and homers on offense, hockey has goal scores only. Many more possibilities on defense as well. But hockey brawls are vastly superior to baseball, although not so much post 20th century.

Remember when we were kids and had radio only. Game 162, 25 games out - and yet we'd be listening. I coudn't have been the only one.. Of course we'd all be outside playing but the game would be on.

I have to imagine Paul DePodesta is going to get fired from the Browns. He needs to return to baseball. He is clearly out of his element in football. I would trust him to rebuild the Tigers. Hopefully he could replace AA.

Of the 24 players listed, only 5 hit home runs better than the 2017 AL AVG.

V. Martinez
M. Cabrera
C. Huffman
N. Castellanos
C. Stewart

There is a fair chance 2-3 of these do not even start the season with DET Ronny Rodriguez and Mike Gerber would be the next 2 on the list.

And for anyone that is curious, Niko Goodrum (Switch) has started everywhere except P and C over the last 3 years. He is also one of the fastest players DET has. His defense isn't too shabby, regardless of where he plays. He can pitch hit, pinch run and be used as a defensive replacement.

There are 4 DET pitchers who average more HRs given up than the 2017 league average. Fiers, Lamb, Carpenter and Boyd. Zimmermann is just a tad out.

Burrows and F. Perez belong to DET, they just aren't on the 40-man roster (yet).

As posted on KC's DTTN thread, the Tigers FO apparently attempted to negotiate a contract extension with Nick C, but were rebuffed. So now that makes it more likely that the Tigers will try to trade him over the next two years, preferably to a contender for blue chip prospect(s) @ the trade deadline, or during the next offseason, hopefully w/o his completely sucking in RF beforehand, and having a good '18 season @ the plate.

Of coure the Tigers could try again next year to extend him, but if the team becomes as bad as projected, and he himself has a shitty season overall on O and D, his value to other ballclubs will sink like a rock, and maybe make him more amenable to an extension.

Castellanos WILL NOT garner any blue chip prospects. Period. He has very limited appeal to very few teams. He cannot play defense, so we are talking mostly AL and/or teams of need for a DH.

Further. All I read is about his hard hit rate. Despite that, no other metric showed improvement, especially his walk rate. Having a high hard hit rate does not equate to anything. Look at Freddie Freeman from 2015 to 2016 (high hard hit rate) to 2017. There is no difference, other than his BABIP was greater in 2016 (high hard hit rate). Castellanos, despite his high hard hit rate, had a lower BABIP in 2017 than he did in 2016. There is no correlation to having a high hard hit rate to anything of substance.

Castellanos' value right now is his is power. Despite hitting triples (a product of Comerica), he is a below runner. He doesn't necessarily get on base at a high enough rate.

career highs in HR, 2B & 3B. Hopefully he continues to improve in those areas and the Tigers can trade him for a something of value. Too bad he sucks defensively...he could be a real asset

His counting stats mean nothing without improvement in other areas. He is another Mark Trumbo, you never know what you are going to get from 1 season to the next, other than bad defense.

I agree with you on the bad defense.

Not sure I agree with the Trumbo comp. Nick is a better hitter and gets on base more than Trumbo ever did. At age 25 I think he still has a chance to improve.

Either way...he certainly isn't going to be a great player with his shitty defense. That much we can agree on. I hope he hits 20+ HR before the break and someone desperate for a bat over pays for him.

The comp is spot on. In a park neutral setting, they get on base roughly the same.

Career Away

Trumbo .294 OBP .451 SLG .745 OPS
Castellanos .292 OBP .431 SLG .723 OPS

Last 3 Away

Castellanos .296 OBP .458 SLG .754 OPS
Trumbo .296 OBP .442 SLG .737 OPS

Didn't Trumbo pull Tyler Skaggs in a trade? A top 15 prospect in all of baseball at the time of the trade.

The Diamondbacks gave up both Skaggs and Adam Eaton in the deal.

LAA = Trumbo, A.J. Schugel

ARZ = Skaggs (top 100), Eaton (top 100)

CHW = Hector Santiago, Brandon Jacobs

This is one of the trades that sunk Kevin Towers as GM of the Diamondbacks. Of course, he also took Dontrelle Willis from DET, so he can't be all bad, right?

The fact that some GM might give up a blue chip player is plausible. Expecting it is another matter.

Nick is a bit inconsistent.. When he's on he can be very good.. I'm hoping he can be the DH this season.
