link.

haven't read this all the way through yet, but wow. the article only covers public schools in the state of Michigan, but I assume it's even worse in other places, especially ACC/SEC Land.

I suspected that yarn about college athletics being self-supporting was bullshit, but ****ing eh... it's not enough they get virtually free labor, they have to suck millions from the general fund just to stay afloat??? WTF?

The root of the problem is these MAC schools trying to compete in div I. They all need to go down to Div II

Wow.

Looks like Eastern football is like taking money and dumping it into the Huron River.

I think this was the 235th consecutive game where no fans showed up to watch EMU play at home.

I think within 20 years you will get your wish. Eastern should not even field a team, not that the product they have now should be considered a team anyways.

insane. who even benefits, aside from the coaches? obviously students aren't flocking to EMU for the gameday environment.

in related news, Deadspin reported that Iowa's S&C coach makes around $550,000 per year in base salary. A ****ing weight trainer...

Saw that during some show with people yelling at eachother, one of whom was Desmond.

Who said Kineseology was a dead end major?

didn't we talk about this in the fall when the two econ profs (I think from Rutgers) published a piece that said nationally, only about 25 athletic programs are self-funding and many of them are hemorrhaging cash. When ESPN covered the story I think they highlighted Eastern Michigan as well and talked about how even though they lose tons of money and nobody goes to their games, they still spend a crapload of dough for those special, one-game uniforms. RU may not be as bad as Eastern but it's criminal what's going on there and elsewhere - but everyone needs a new or completely renovated stadium, state of the art practice facilities with luxury amenities for players, etc. ESPN has done a Cribs-like special on a bunch of them like LSU, Oregon, Kentucky - football and basketball players are living large.

I think ESPN or HBO also talked about a school in the south that dumped football (possibly athletics in general) and turned their football field into a student run farm - they're saving a ton of money not having football and producing fresh food that goes to their cafeteria program.
