August 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1906: Wee Willie Keeler strikes out for only the second time this season, both times by spitballer Ed Walsh of the White Sox.

1907: Detroit's first Sunday game at home since 1902, and the first at Bennett Park, is a 16 - 3 win over New York.

1915: The Browns send pitchers Bill James and Grover Lowdermilk to the Tigers for 1B Baby Doll Jacobson.

1936: Tigers second baseman Charlie Gehringer gets his 2,000th hit.

1938: When Detroit's Billy Rogell walks his first time up, it is his seventh consecutive base on balls, a new American League record.

1948: Hank Greenberg and Leo Durocher pay their final respects to the great Babe Ruth (Yankee Stadium.

1960: Facing just 27 batters, Lew Burdette pitches a 1 - 0 no-hitter against the Phillies. Tony Gonzalez, the only Phil to reach base, is hit by a Burdette pitch in the 5th inning but erased on a double play. The Milwaukee pitcher also scores the only run of the game.

1961: Ron Kline, purchased from the Angels on August 10, blanks the Red Sox on four hits to give the Tigers a 5 - 0 win. Bill Monbouquette fails for the 9th time to win his 9th, lasting just four innings and gives up homers to Billy Bruton and Rocky Colavito.

1964: Mickey Lolich strikes out 10 in a 3-hit 1 - 0 shutout of the angels.

1967: The Detroit Tigers released Jim Landis.

1967: A baseball tragedy occurs when Tony Conigliaro of the Red Sox is beaned by the Angels' Jack Hamilton. Hit on the left cheekbone, just below the eye socket, Conigliaro will miss the rest of this year and all of 1968. He is hitting .267 with 20 home runs and 67 RBI in 95 games. Despite the loss of Tony C, the Red Sox will sweep the 4-game series with the Angels. The sweep will still leave Minnesota in 1st place, with Boston, Detroit, and Chicago all within two games.

1972: Mickey Lolich regains first place for the Tigers as he bests the Angels and Nolan Ryan, 2 - 0. Pitching a complete game shutout, it is Lolich's 19th win.

1975: Earl Averill, Bucky Harris, Billy Herman, Judy Johnson and Ralph Kiner are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1977: Dodger P Don Sutton throws his 5th one-hitter, tying the National League record, as he blanks the Giants, 7 - 0. The lone hit is Marc Hill's two-out single in the 8th.

1977: Jason Thompson became just the third Tigers player to hit a home run completely over the right-field roof of Tiger Stadium, joining Norm Cash and Jim Northrup. By the time Tiger Stadium closed, 32 balls had been hit fair over the right-field roof, and Thompson had two of them. But his blast 38 years ago today had something no other rooftop home run had: Thompson hit it off a pitcher who would go on to the Baseball Hall of Fame - Catfish Hunter of the New York Yankees.

1984: Detroit's Juan Berenguer goes 8 1/3 innings and strikes out 12 to give the Tigers a 4 - 3 victory over the Mariners. Kirk Gibson drives in three runs with his 20th homer of the year, and becomes the first Tiger ever to reach 20 in both homers and steals. Gibson's homer is his 15th game-winning RBI this year.

1989: Guillermo (Willie) Hernandez makes his final career appearance after 13 seasons in the Tigers 7 - 3 win over the yankees.

1995: Yankees announcer, and former SS, Phil Rizzuto retires as team broadcaster after 39 years at the mike, reportedly because WPIX-TV refused to allow him to miss a game to attend teammate Mickey Mantle's funeral. Rizzuto eventually will return for the 1996 season.

1998: Alex Rodriguez goes 5-for-5 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs, but the #Tigers win 7-6 over the mariners on birthday boy Bobby Higginson's grand slam.

2013: Miguel Cabrera hits his 40th home run of the season Max Scherzer pitched eight innings of two-run ball for his 18th win as the Tigers beat the royals 6 - 3.

2018: The Oakland Athletics traded players to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Fiers. The Oakland Athletics sent Nolan Blackwood (minors) (August 18, 2018) and Logan Shore (minors) (September 19, 2018) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

Tigers backstop John Hicks likely won?t make it back this year after requiring abdominal surgery. That?s a disappointing turn for a player who has turned in a solid performance in a robust role this year.
Hicks, who is nearing his 29th birthday, has hit within range of league average at the MLB level since landing in Detroit. While he has been miscast as a part-time first baseman, his offensive work is more than adequate for a time-sharing catcher.

Tigers shutting down Casey Mize after reaching his innings limit.
Detnews

They are excusing him from minor-league games after he started five times, spanning 13-2/3 innings, with his last four starts on behalf of their Single A Lakeland team.

Mize's arm and health are fine, the Tigers say. But after he threw 114-2/3 innings this season at Auburn, he has reached his ceiling, in his bosses' view.

"He's been throwing since last October, and he's wearing down, running out of gas," said Dave Littlefield, the TIgers vice president of player personnel. "As we said when he first signed, we wanted him only to throw 15 or 20 innings, something in that range, and we're very comfortable with the decision."

Mize was generally effective in his five starts, which featured six hits, 13 strikeouts, and three walks.

Tigers Michael Fulmer is through 4 IP for Lakeland and likely done:

4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
56 pitches (42 strikes)

Fastball sat 97-99 in the 4th.

He?s fine.
