Tigers claim OF James Outman from Twins, Javy Báez moved to 60-day IL.
Outman is out of options, so he’s joining the Tigers. Does this mean Jahmai Jones is done?
BYBTB

He had a phenomenal rookie year in 2023, posting a .790 OPS (114 OPS+) in 567 plate appearances with 23 home runs and 16 stolen bases. Since that season, he’s hit just .144 with a .520 OPS (45 OPS+) in 374 plate appearances and has struck out a whopping 39.3 percent of the time.

Tigers claim former Dodgers rookie of the year candidate from Twins.

Tigers take series from Twins, then take an outfielder from them, too.
Tigers pickup James Outman can play all three outfield positions, and has played mostly center field in 2026.
The Tigers took the series from the Minnesota Twins. Then they took an outfielder from the Twins.
The Tigers announced Thursday afternoon that they have claimed veteran outfielder James Outman off waivers from the Twins. Outman, who hit 23 home runs in 2023 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was designated for assignment by the Twins earlier this month.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Outman, the Tigers transferred Javy Báez (ankle) to the 60-day injured list. Outman is out of minor-league options, signaling he might join the Tigers active roster before Friday's series opener in Cleveland. The Tigers would have to clear a roster space to make room.

Tigers claim Twins OF James Outman, trade for reliever dominating in Triple-A.
The Detroit Tigers claimed outfielder James Outman off waivers from the Minnesota Twins following their 11-0 win over Minnesota on Thursday, June 11, at Comerica Park.
Outman, 29, debuted for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022 and put up a sterling rookie season in 2023, slashing .248/.353/.437 with 23 home runs and 16 stolen bases over 151 games. He has yet to put up positive value in three seasons after his breakout season, however, hitting a meager .144 in 334 at-bats since the start of 2024.

Tigers' Colt Keith loved silent treatment. He hopes he never gets it again.
Colt Keith's home run in Thursday's game was his first since last September. It snapped a drought of 219 at-bats.
Yes, of course it was getting to him. He hadn't homered since September.
"I think it's just something that's always in the back of your head," Colt Keith said. "I don't know if it, you know, made me change my swing or my approach in any way, but it's definitely lingered in the back of your head, wanting to get that first one of the way."

Tigers prospect Ben Jacobs reminds Freep writer of a young Tarik Skubal.
It’s like some Tarik Skubal magic has rubbed off on Ben Jacobs, a Detroit Tigers prospect whose stock has soared.
During the offseason, Jacobs was throwing a bullpen at Arizona State, getting ready for the minor league season.
Skubal, the reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner, was also training at Arizona State at the same time, getting ready to pitch for the Tigers.

Why Detroit Tigers have tough decision ahead with RHP Keider Montero.
The home run rate? Down.
The walk rate? Down.
The strikeout rate? Well, that's also down, but that might not be a problem for Detroit Tigers pitcher Keider Montero.
And with the young right-hander throwing as well as he is, the Tigers have a tough decision ahead of them.
The Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins, 11-0, at Comerica Park on Thursday, June 11, with Montero pitching 6⅓ shutout innings in one of his best performances of the year. Montero's final line reflected the trends he has been showing at his best all season, with 10 fly outs to four strikeouts in a remarkably efficient performance from the starter.

Tigers lose game, Flaherty in loss to Guardians: 'We know where we're at'.
Given the size of the mountain the Tigers are tasked with climbing to get back into the playoff picture, any loss, but particularly a loss to a rival team in the division, can feel more calamitous than it is.
Manager AJ Hinch addressed that issue before the Tigers were beaten by the Cleveland Guardians, 3-2, in the first of a three-game weekend set at Progressive Field Friday night.

Detroit Tigers fall prey to greatest foe in Cleveland: Tanner Bibee.
The Detroit Tigers have beaten the Cleveland Guardians more than it seems like these past couple seasons, including in the ALDS last fall. They just can’t beat Tanner Bibee.
Lately, the Tigers can’t even hit the Cleveland righty and didn’t again in the series opener at Progressive Field, losing 3-2 and falling to 29-41. Well, the new guy – James Outman – hit Bibee when he smacked a solo home run to keep the Tigers in it early. He also made a spectacular play in center to give Tigers righty Jack Flaherty a chance to get out of a jam in the second inning.

Mathewson and Three Finger Brown match no-hitters for eight innings. The Giants get two hits in the 9th for the win, and a pair of errors committed by Bill Dahlen at shortstop prevent Mathewson from hurling a perfect game.

1912: Christy Mathewson reaches his 300th career victory as the New York Giants beat the Chicago Cubs, 3 - 2. During his 17-year major league career, Mathewson will compile a 373-188 record.

In tomorrow's game, Ruth will hit two more home runs, his sixth and seventh in five games, in a 9 - 6 win over Detroit.

Fewer than two months later, the 53-year-old Ruth will die from throat cancer.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Casey Mize will be a free agent at the end of this season. Currently, he has some of the best stats on the starting rotation – #1 in ERA and #2 in WHIP (but almost tied for #1 with Tarik Skubal).
He was the Tigers #1 draft pick and #1 overall in MLB back in 2018.
Mize has had 7 years with the Tigers but only 3 of them so far as full seasons. Injuries, especially to the hamstrings, have been a yearly event.
The Tigers will lose the majority of their starting rotation after this year. Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Justin Verlander and Mize will be gone in 2027. Only Framber Valdez and Keider Montero will be back. Technically, so will Reese Olson and Jackson Jobe but they’ve yet to be tested after having their arms surgically repaired.
The Tigers go through an average of 11-12 different starting pitchers per year.
Should they extend Mize beyond this year? He just turned 29 last month and is earning just over $6 mill. His agent is not Scott Boras.
Logically, he’d be looking for a 4-5 year contract.

Should the Tigers extend Casey Mize?

1. Yes, extend him.

2. No, it's time to move on.

The Tigers today activated RHP Kenley Jansen off the 10-day injured list, selected the contract of RHP Jacob Waguespack (#58) and added OF James Outman (#43) to the active roster. All three players are available last night in the series opener at Cleveland.
To make room on the active roster, RHP Beau Brieske was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after yesterday’s game, INF Zack Short was designated for assignment and RHP Brenan Hanifee was optioned to Triple-A.

Their absence has flown a bit under the radar with all the other iniuries, but the Tigers really miss Parker Meadows + Javy Báez. Detroit has a bottom 3 defense in MLB. Meadows + Báez are not only the Tigers’ 2 best non-catcher defenders, they also bring some juice to the lineup.

A.J. Hinch on Flaherty: "He slipped on the mound and then he was able to recover and tolerate it. He talked a little bit about it in the 2nd inning, and then the [comebacker in 3rd] really irritated him. We're going to get tests and get him worked up and looked at and all that."

The Tigers today activated LHP Tarik Skubal off the 15-day injured list and optioned RHP Ty Madden to Triple-A Toledo. Additionally, RHP Jack Flaherty was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left peroneal strain and INF Hao-Yu Lee was recalled from Triple-A.
