Tigers option Ty Madden to Toledo, but it might not be for long.
The Tigers optioned right-hander Ty Madden to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday to clear a spot for the return of Tarik Skubal.
But manager AJ Hinch basically told Madden to stay close to his phone. He might not be down for long.
“There is going to be a little back and forth and that’s what I told Ty,” Hinch said. “He pitched great yesterday and I like him in that hybrid role. I think he can start, too. He’s going to continue to get opportunities, especially if he continues to handle his arsenal the way he is.”

Tarik Skubal is back and the Detroit Tigers are on the clock.
nd now the clock begins. Tarik Skubal is back. If the Detroit Tigers want to keep him, they’ll have to keep winning series and get back to .500, at least.
They’ve got until, oh, mid-July or so – about a month from now or roughly 30 games, depending on how you measure a season. Go 20-10 and they’ll get near even in the uninspiring American League, with a reasonable chance at making a run at the playoffs.

Guardians smother Tigers in Tarik Skubal’s return.
Skubal looked healthy, but Daniel Schneemann’s two-run homer was the difference.

Tarik Skubal brings heat but execution is off as Guardians top Tigers.
There are no magic pills or potions in baseball.
The return of reigning, two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will provide a shot in the arm for the Tigers over time, but it was unrealistic to think he was going come back after missing 45 days and immediately turn the season around.
"I don't want to play into that narrative of trying to be back," Skubal said after the Tigers were beaten by the Guardians 3-1 Saturday at Progressive Field. "I need to be better, plain and simple. 'Just happy to be there,' that's a loser mentality to me. I need to go out there and pitch and compete and give my team a chance to win and I didn't do that."
Detnews

Tarik Skubal's return not enough to shake Tigers' Cleveland malaise.
They can’t beat 'em. Not this season anyway. Not at Comerica Park. Not so far at Progressive Field.
That’s six losses in a row for the Detroit Tigers vs. the Cleveland Guardians, if you’re counting – almost all of them unfolding the same way: The Tigers hang around and keep it close; the Guardians make the deciding play.
At the plate. In the field. Usually both. Also, weird things tend to happen when these teams get together. Fluky things. Hit batters. Errant throws. Bat luck. Puck luck. Whatever. Doesn’t matter. Nor does it matter – apparently – if the game’s best pitcher is on the mound for the Tigers.

Tarik Skubal’s comeback start spoiled by another Tigers’ loss in Cleveland.
The Detroit Tigers were glad to get their ace back, but would have preferred to celebrate with a victory.
The Cleveland Guardians withstood an unusual flurry of in-game injuries and the Tigers went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in 3-1 loss on Saturday night at Progressive Field.
The Tigers (29-42) are now 0-6 against the Guardians (39-33) in 2026 and will try to stave off a sweep in Sunday’s finale.

June 14 in Tigers and mlb history:

1870: In what is considered by many historians the greatest baseball game of the 19th century, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, baseball's first all-professional team sees their winning streak stopped at 89 in a wild 11-inning battle with the Atlantic of Brooklyn team, 8 - 7. The game is tied 5 - 5 after nine innings of play, and the Atlantic players are happy to have a draw but Cincinnati captain Harry Wright insists that the game be played to a decision.
The Red Stockings score twice in the 11th inning, but the Atlantic come back with three in their half to win. The game is notable as being the first extra-inning game between professional clubs, and as one of the lowest-scoring games of its day. As is the practice of the day, Atlantic continues to bat after having clinched the game, but no further runs are scored.

1912: New York Giants ace Christy Mathewson won his 300th career game vs. the Cubs and the Giants moved to 37-8. Seen here in 1912 in color, the future HOF'er went on to go 23-12/2.12 that season for the NL Pennant winners and was his 10th of 12 straight 20+ win seasons.

1933 - Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak stays intact, even though he and Yankees manager Joe McCarthy are thrown out of a game. McCarthy is suspended for three games but not Gehrig, whose streak, now at 1,249, continues.

1939: The Detroit Tigers traded Harry Eisenstat and cash to the Cleveland Indians for future HOF'er Earl Averill.
Will be a key pinch hitter on the 1940 pennant-winning team.

1952: Boston Braves pitcher Warren Spahn ties the National League record of Jim Whitney with 18 strikeouts in an 15-inning, 3 - 1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Spahn's home run is the only Braves run.

1952: The Boston Braves sign 18-year-old Henry Aaron and assign him to the Eau Claire Bears (Class C). He will play second base and be named the Northern League Rookie of the Year.

1954: The Detroit Tigers traded Johnny Pesky to the Washington Senators for Mel Hoderlein.

1956: The Detroit Tigers signed Jim Robertson as a free agent.

1957: The Detroit Tigers traded Earl Torgeson to the Chicago White Sox for Dave Philley.

1957: Al Kaline at Briggs (Tiger) Stadium.

1963: Duke Snider hits his 400th career home run off Bob Purkey to highlight a 10 - 3 triumph by the New York Mets over the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field.

1965: Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds no-hits the New York Mets for 10 innings and ties a National League record with 18 strikeouts in an extra-inning game, but loses the game when Johnny Lewis hits a lead-off home run in the 11th inning that gives the Mets a 1 - 0 win.

1966: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and Don Demeter to the Boston Red Sox for Joe Christopher and Earl Wilson.
The Detroit Tigers sent Julio Navarro (June 21, 1966) to the Boston Red Sox to complete the trade.

1968: Don Wert hits the game-winning home run in the 14th inning to beat the white sox 6 - 5.

1968: John Hiller's season. The lefty pitcher worked as a reliever and starter, tossing the first complete game of his career this week in 1968. He tallied 9 wins, 3 holds & 2 saves with a 2.39 ERA in 128 innings pitched that year.

1969: The New York Yankees traded Tom Tresh to the Detroit Tigers for Ron Woods.

1969: Reggie Jackson of the Oakland Athletics collects 10 RBI with two home runs, a double and two singles against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. In the 8th inning, Jackson drives in three runs with a single when he easily could have made second base. Oakland wins, 21 - 7.

1974: At Anaheim Stadium, Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 Boston Red Sox batters in 13 innings, including Cecil Cooper six consecutive times, to help the California Angels to a 4 - 3 victory in 15 innings. Ryan threw 235 pitches.

1979: Sparky Anderson makes his managerial debut for the Tigers in a loss to the mariners.

1979: Willie McCovey of the San Francisco Giants hits his 513th home run, off Dennis Lamp, establishing him as the National League all-time left-handed home run leader, but the Chicago Cubs beat the Giants, 8 - 6, at Candlestick Park.

1983: Kirk Gibson hits a home run over the right field roof of Tiger Stadium in a loss to the red sox.

1996: Cal Ripken, Jr. sets a new consecutive games record by playing in his 2,216th consecutive game. The previous mark of 2,215 was held by Hiroshima Carp third baseman Sachio Kinugasa while playing in the Japanese Central League.

2002: With all 14 interleague games - and one National League game - taking place in NL parks, a designated hitter is not used in a full slate of major league games for the first time since 1972. Visiting pitchers will have plenty of opportunities to swing the bat as there is not a home game scheduled in American League parks for 10 consecutive days.

2005: Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners becomes the third major leaguer since 1900 to reach 1,000 hits in fewer than 700 games when he singles in the bottom of the 1st inning in the Mariners' 3 - 1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Suzuki's 1,000th hit comes in his 696th game. Chuck Klein reached the mark in 1933 in 683 games, and Lloyd Waner reached it in 1932 in 686 games.

2010: For the first time in over 60 years, two players with 5,000+ career at-bats and a .330+ career average meet in a major league contest - Albert Pujols of the Cards versus Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners. The last such matchup had occurred in 1942 with Joe Medwick and Paul Waner.

2011: Justin Verlander comes within 5 outs of pitching his second no-hitter of the season in leading the Tigers into first place in the AL Central with a 4 - 0 win over Cleveland. He strikes out 12 in pitching a two-hit shutout, with Orlando Cabrera's 8th-inning single the first safety of the night against his overwhelming stuff.

2016: Miguel Cabrera tallies four hits, including two doubles, in the Tigers' 11-8 win over the White Sox.

2017: The Detroit Tigers drafted Will Vest in the 12th round of the 2017 amateur draft. Player signed June 19, 2017.
2017: The Detroit Tigers drafted Drew Carlton in the 32nd round of the 2017 amateur draft. Player signed June 26, 2017.
2017: The Detroit Tigers drafted Jeff Criswell in the 35th round of the 2017 amateur draft, but was not signed.

2025: By hitting two home runs in an 11 - 5 win over the Giants, Shohei Ohtani reaches the milestone of 250 homers for his career. The win gives the Dodgers once again sole possession of first place in the NL West after San Francisco had caught them with a win the day before.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

We all remember the drama surrounding Alex Bregman and the Tigers’ attempt to sign him. He went to the Red Sox the first time despite the Tigers’ higher offer and then opted out and signed another contract with the Chicago Cubs for 5 years/$175 mill at age 32.
You may remember that his agent is Scott Boras. The 2nd time around, the Tigers refused to engage in bidding for him.
The Cubs are currently sitting around .500, 7.5 games (through Friday’s games) out of 1st place.
Bregman is publicly blaming himself for what he considers poor performance and his “inability” to help his team. He is known for his leadership, character and always stepping up.
His slash line sits just above the entire Tigers’ cumulative slash line and sits lower than what he usually puts up. He’s got 6 HRs so far and 22 RBIs in 69 games. However, the big difference is that he walks a ton and strikeouts very little. His plate discipline is considered to be elite.
Defensively, he ranks 4th in DRS in all of MLB and he’s the 3rd best player with a glove on the Cubs. He is marginally better than Kevin McGonigle at the same position.
Where Bregman really excels is his reputation as a highly-effective mentor and leader for the younger players, taking a very active role in helping train and coach them. All players have lauded him for his accessibility and willingness to work overtime as a mentor and team leader.
The Tigers have started to bring up their younger, inexperienced players. It is unknown if the Tigers have a leader and mentor among their roster.
Given all of these factors, do you feel the Tigers should have pushed again and signed Bregman last winter?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Should the Tigers have pushed to sign Alex Bregman the 2nd time he became a free agent?

1. Yes.

2. No.

If the Tigers are serious about beating the Guardians, they need to adopt Cleveland's blueprint.
Better drafting, and particularly better work drafting out of Latin America, is key to keeping up with the Guardians' steady ways. It makes some likely Tigers deadline deals all the more of an imperative.

Tigers' Justin Verlander hungry to get back into big-league competition.
Justin Verlander was searching for a polite PG-13 way to say what he wanted to say.
“Like, I don’t want it to sound rude, but it’s time to s--- or get off the pot,” he said.
It’s been a frustrating stretch for the 43-year-old future Hall-of-Famer who has been trying to get back from a hip injury since April 1.
“It’s been tough, mentally,” he said. “I’m disappointed that I’m not out there pitching. A short-term thing turned into a long-term thing.”

Kevin McGonigle doing 'epic' things, but Tigers can't rise to his level.
Not often does an at-bat that ends in an out get labeled “epic.”
And maybe Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch overstated his case when he used that word to describe Kevin McGonigle’s taut eight-pitch, ninth-inning showdown against one of the best closers in baseball.
But then I’d agree with Hinch after watching the rookie battle the Guardians’ Cade Smith with the game in the balance and the tying runs on base Saturday, June 13, at Progressive Field.

It was expected that he would decree a 50-game season, as allowed by the March 26th agreement between the MLBPA and owners, but he is now reluctant to do so.

2021: Taking account of Major League Baseball's decision last off-season to recognize the Negro Leagues as having been major leagues, Baseball-Reference.com unveils a major upgrade of its website to reflect this, with available Negro League numbers now integrated into players' records. "Our intent is to have consistent treatment across the white major leagues and the Black major leagues," site founder and President Sean Forman explains.
