Drew Sharp

assume most people here will feel the same way. I'm doubtful this gets him canned though it should.

I'm sure this happens all the time in the world of bloggers and "journalists"

There is a local paper in Denver called Westword that is the 'counter cultural' paper in town and they've had a rash of issues and battles recently with bloggers who seem to steal content right from Westword but then blog it as their own.

Hard to police, I'm sure but you'd think Sharp would be better and a little more careful

Yeah I was going to post this a few days ago but totally forgot. Weird stuff.

From the article:

And while Sharp never spoke to Miranda, the DSR did. The following is her reaction to the Sharp feature:

“I have not talked to Drew Sharp or anyone else with the Free Press before or after their story was published. I was browsing Twitter and noticed Joe Rexrode praising Drew Sharp for his article about me.

How does a quadriplegic browse twitter?

indeed. well maybe not sharp himself, but his editors at the freep - he never comes off as that bright* - especially since there's software out there designed to catch copyright violations/plagiarism. it's a pretty simple matter to use it. my mom is a newspaper editor and she's had to deal with staff ripping off pictures/content occasionally. in each case it's due to laziness, & they are always surprised when they get caught. they always have to pay a couple grand to settle with the copyright holder

*I mean how smart do you have to be to figure out the formula: insult local sports teams = more clicks/press = more sales, & happy editor & publisher.

they have special software and technology for that. and websites increasingly have to be accessible to disabled persons, just as physical locations have to

Really isn't shocking in a world where major news papers basically exist by stealing content, re-writing it and citing the original content. Most sport sections are essentially the same stories, with the same information, regurgitated.

I can probably just mention Mitch Albom in the context of this story, and people will remember what story of his I'd bring up for comparison. It was that big a deal, we remember it and it was common knowledge. (I never really read his articles and I still know about it.) Most people that read Drew Sharp probably won't even be aware that this happened.

they both write for the freep (checks)... yes.

nothing on Sharp's page about it online, yet. Just his last article on how MSU was better off without Saban (LOL, yes and also Bobby Williams, John L Smith and most of the 00's).

Presumably the freep still has some formal fact-checking/standards people that are reviewing this now. Assuming this is an open and shut case, Sharp's fate will likely be sealed by how he responds. if he's defiant, I think they have no choice but to fire him. if there is no response, time to start sending their ombudsman some letters.

I don't think anything will happen. Times have changed and there's no money for print. They can't afford to employ people that give a crap about this kind of thing.

No, nothing will come from this. This hasn't gone national or anything like that. It's just a local thing.

if you actually care, don't just sit there!

you can send a letter or even an email to the freep and demand a response. you don't even need a law degree to do this!

Why do they care what I say? They get no money from me. And that goes for most people. If this blew up and people criticized them for it, it would probably be good for them. It would be attention.

This is true of the Freep and the Detnews. Almost every day when I post stories on the Tigers and the Lions, these two Detroit media sites have the same stories, with new titles and time stamps, but the same stories. I had to post a possible 'same story' a few times awhile ago before rereading entirely. I called out Anthony Fenech a Tigers beat writer about this at the Freep. He said it wasn't him, that people above him, editors? who do that. Sounds like they try to get more views/reads on the same stories.
But why would anyone want to do that with that terrible blog the Detroit Sports Rag?
Jeff Moss who has had the Swearengen pic is an obnoxious troll who insults everyone.

Update.

wow... you're more cynical than me.

I actually do plan to review the facts here and send them a complaint (assuming its warranted). will let you know what I hear back.

More on this

We get the free press everyday at work, which i read at lunch

I haven't seen Drew Sharp's name in the paper since this broke. He was completely absent from the coverage for Michigan and MSU in their bowl game. Each writer does a small write-up and makes a pick for each game and Drew Sharp was absent.

Maybe he'll just disappear now.

Hasn't been on 105.1. Special guest host Lindsey Hunter the last couple of days. Definitely something odd.
