SI lists six candidates:

Mike Boynton (current UM assistant) (got fired after 7 seasons and only one tourney appearance at OkSt, and would be the cheapest, easiest move to make, so this is probably what Warde will do.)

Josh Schertz (SLU HC) (He did a lot with very little talent, so maybe?)

Billy Donovan ( just left the Bulls, won two NCs at UF... yes? Stayed at UF for a long time. hire him. and fire Warde.)

Nate Oats (Alabama HC) (I wasn't impressed by the job he did there)

Mark Byington (Vanderbilt HC) (I know almost nothing about him)

Ben McCollum (Iowa HC) (Ditto. I don't know, maybe?)

Yeah, I read that by immediately slapping Byington wiht the interim label, it limited transfers. Oh well... here we go.

Though I think Warde would've gone with that decision regardless of the roster retention issue, since that's the same thing he did with Sherrone Moore after Harbaugh left.

Given the flux of college athletics, whomever the next coach is at Michigan will likely be some where else in three years' time, so it doesn't matter much to me is hired.

Meanwhile, MSU has had three basketball coaches in the last 57 seasons. That level of continuity and commitment doesn't have a price tag. That Michigan has been a revolving door from the beginning in comparison (Beilein's 12 years is the longest tenure, and all M coaches in my lifetime have either been fired or left -- except Dave Strack) causes me to conclude that Michigan basketball lacks a fundamental reason to be. JMHO.

I think the days of a program having a single coach for long periods of time (10+ years) are in the past. Just like players staying at one school for their whole collegiate career. The game is changing and I am not sure it is for the better. Still, huge amounts of money were made in the past on players with little compensation and coaches have always been free to leave for a better offer. So, I think it is moving in a direction that is more fair, which I think is good.
