Totally Tigers
Over the winter, the Tigers moved Colt Keith from his 2B position to 1B. They had signed Gleyber Torres to play 2B and expected Spencer Torkelson to continue his offensive and defensive struggles.
But Torkelson won his job back by becoming 1 of the team’s best hitters and also improving his fielding skills to become a plus defender.
Keith did a short stint at 2B when Torres became injured and made a number of questionable plays.
He is currently serving mostly as the DH and occasionally at 1B when Torkelson needs a day off. But he is not playing full time.
Keith was moved from 3B because of a shoulder injury. His only positional options are 1B and 2B.
He is struggling this year and has one of the team’s lowest offensive numbers. He is also a negative defender.
But the season is only a month old and things can change. Last year, he also struggled in April before doing better in May.
The Tigers signed Keith to a 6-year contract with an additional 3 years of team options. They wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t see significant potential. He is making just under $4 mill this season.
But what is the best way for Keith to find success?
Is it to keep him as DH and occasionally play 1B and 2B? To see MLB-level pitching? To hope that last year’s pattern returns?
Or is it better for the Tigers to send him down to Toledo so he can clear his mind and focus on improving with much less pressure? To be able to play every day. In Detroit, he wouldn’t be playing daily.
