Catcher Jake Rogers has just returned to the roster after a stint on the IL.
While he was gone, backup catcher Dillon Dingler went on a tear both behind and at the plate.
Dingler is ranked #3 in all of MLB for catching defense. His skills are considered elite and his arm strength/speed ranks #1 in MLB. He is ranked #3 in WAR for catchers in the AL.
He is also hitting very well with one of the team’s best slash lines: .292/.319/.462/.780 .
Jake Rogers also has excellent defensive skills although not at the level Dingler has now achieved. He is however, a veteran, with Dillon still young and not as experienced.
In 5 years with Detroit, Rogers’ cumulative slash line is .202/.271/.393/.664. He has always struggled with his offense.
Last year, he hit .197/.255/.352/.607. This year, before he hit the IL, his slash line is .222/.364/.333/.697 .
He is Tarik Skubal’s personal catcher and Skubal gives him credit for last year’s great achievement.
Rogers is now 30 years old while Dingler is 26.
When Jake returns, should he remain as the #1 catcher? Or should that honor now go to Dingler?

Who should be the #1 catcher going forward?

1. Dillon Dingler

2. Jake Rogers

exactly. Even the "personal catcher" is horse shit. This season Skubal has pitched 44 1/3 innings without his personal catcher (I think all of them with Dingler). He has a 1.83 ERA with 61K and 2 BB in those games. I think Skubal will be just fine without Rogers.
