GAME 74 - Detroit Tigers @ Houston Astros, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 2:10 PM

Detroit has 48 players on the 40 man roster. Just 7 are set to be FAs.
Josue Briceño, Max Anderson, Ben Malgeri, Andrew Sears, John Peck + Brett Callahan are R5 eligible.
Even if the Tigers aren’t in it, there’s a lot riding on the rest of ‘26 to see who should be part of ‘27.

Skubal to make Comerica Park return against division-leading White Sox.

Players with value the Tigers could realistically trade elsewhere at the deadline:
Tarik Skubal
Gleyber Torres (if healthy)
Casey Mize
Jack Flaherty (if healthy)
Drew Anderson
Kyle Finnegan
Kenley Jansen
Jake Rogers
Will Vest
Spencer Torkelson
A lot of potential for a farm system overhaul with the draft also coming in under a month.
A majority of the guys listed are on expiring contracts. Only Vest and Torkelson have multiple years of control (excluding Anderson, Jansen, and Finnegan who have club options).
So the same guy who has made one trade in four years and has presided over a mediocre farm system especially outside of McGonigle is going to start another rebuild 4 years after his first failed try?

The 2026 Detroit Tigers:
With Gleyber Torres 23-20, 4.81 runs per game.
Without Gleyber Torres 7-24, 3.03 runs per game.

The Tigers have 1 or less hits through the first 4 innings in 18% of games this season (13 games).

MLB today proposed an overhauled domestic amateur-entry system that removes high school players from the draft, makes college players eligible after sophomore year, shortens the draft from 20 to 12 rounds, and cuts bonus pool from current $358.7M to $200M, sources tell ESPN.

The one struggling player all 30 MLB teams should replace at the trade deadline.
Every MLB team has at least one player they should be eager to replace at the trade deadline, or perhaps even sooner.

More than flaherty, but I don't think they get much for these players they might want to move, other than Skubal.

Tarik Skubal issues call to arms that it's put-up or shut-up time for Tigers.
If Tarik Skubal had his way, he would be wearing the Old English D into October this season.
But so much of that, as a pending free agent, is out of his control, especially as the Tigers continue to careen near the bottom of the Central Division.
“The reality of the situation is, we need to play better baseball,” Skubal said Tuesday morning in the visitors’ clubhouse inside Daikin Park. “I’ve said that before and I’ll continue to say that. My belief in this group has never changed. But the reality is we need to play better baseball or else come the deadline, you give the front office an option to reassess where this team is.

Tigers to call up Trei Cruz from Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers are expected to call up switch-hitting utility player Trei Cruz before the game Friday, per multiple sources.
Cruz, 27, and a third-round pick in 2020, will replace Wenceel Perez, who is expected to be placed on the injured list.
Tuesday night, Perez was hit below his left eye in a freak accident during his postgame workout. A resistance band he was using snapped off its hook.
Cruz, who impressed this spring, missed some time last month with an injury.
He had posted a .326 on-base percentage and .660 OPS at Triple-A Toledo.

Tigers plan to call up third-generation MLB player for debut.
Trei Cruz will be called up to make his major-league debut for the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
The news was first reported by 7News sports anchor Ari Alexander.
Cruz is expected to take the roster spot of Wenceel Pérez, who suffered a non-baseball injury in the training room in Houston earlier this week.

MLBTR

Justin Verlander's return to Comerica Park will have to wait.
Verlander, 43, scheduled to start Sunday's series finale against the Chicago White Sox, will instead remain on the injured list. Keider Montero will start instead.
Verlander was expected to return Sunday, after missing 2½ months with left hip inflammation. He's started just one game this season — March 30 at Arizona — since returning to the Tigers on a one-year $13 million deal.

Tigers legend Justin Verlander suffers new injury, scratched from start.
Justin Verlander’s first start for the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park since 2017 will have to wait at least a few more weeks.
Verlander has been scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, manager A.J. Hinch announced Friday. Verlander suffered a left hamstring strain while throwing a bullpen session on Wednesday in Houston.
It’s the second time this season that Verlander’s return to Comerica Park has been postponed.

JV scratched and will be "out awhile".

Time to clean house of every member of the training staff and start fresh. Injuries are one thing, but the amount of setbacks this team has had is 100% on an inept medical staff.

The Tigers drop a couple series, and MLB is proposing a draft overhaul?

"Some team is going to do this. We just don't know who." Ken Rosenthal discusses what the Tigers would look for in a deal involving Tarik Skubal.

“The Detroit Tigers are looking at Yankees prospects (and others, too) and are believed to like them, especially SS George Lombard Jr., whose dad is the Tigers bench coach, and reliever Carlos Lagrange”.

What to know about MLB's draft overhaul proposal. This is going to get real ugly.

I read he will be out for 6 to 8 weeks, we might be lucky to see him pitch in September after another go round in the minors to prepare for pitching with Detroit.
Or it will become another Alex Cobb contract and paid for what was one game?

Situation Specific Manager Situation Success Rate. Bullpen: Manager goes to the bullpen mid-inning with RISP and 2 outs. Pinch Hitter: Manager pinch hits with RISP.
This doesn't tell how good the hitter is performing, or how badly the hitter who was pinch hit for would have performed. I think the managers numbers improve if he has better hitters to choose from. Hunch is middle of the pack here.
I really hope the Tigers trade Skubal to the Dodgers.
Whoever he is traded to, I am preparing myself to be underwhelmed, with the asking price by Harris getting nothing and then trading for less than he would have received he he wasn't such a difficult trading partner. That could be a big reason he is always bringing in 4AAAA players.
