Jesus Christ, Sparty

And a staff member. That sucks. Hope they're overreacting out of precaution and this is as small an issue as possible.

If that ain't enough, apparently there is more to come

something about an off-campus fight/assault involving another player

Personally, I'm really not celebrating about it. But there's a weird culture issue going on that needs to be fixed in EL.

I'm going to join you on this. When I didn't know what was going on, it was fun, but it isn't anymore

that being said, if the names that are being thrown around are really related to these issues, their football team is going to be in bad shape next season.

Same culture that Malik McDowell wanted to be part of that his mother was adamantly against.

Bring back the chip, Mark. You're going to need it this year.

so you know what's going on? Please fill us in because it seems very light on details so far. Maybe this is true and maybe there is a problem but like I said on the MSU board, hopefully this turns out to be a hoax like most high profile campus sexual assault allegations that don't come out of uofm or Notre Dame. But until more is known, it's probably best to reserve judgement.

It's frustrating to not know more but it seems like the University is handling it the right way so far.

you mean like how they fixed the culture in AA? by sending Taylor Lewan to intimidate the victim. Culture fixed.

There were no charges pressed in the Brendan Gibbons case. We shall see if these are equals. You shouldn't pull the ol' "Well, you guys had a guy do this 4 years ago" card. No one is celebrating the idea that there was allegedly a sexual assault at MSU.

Before, when we didn't know that there was allegedly a sexual assault, it was fun to talk about the mishaps at MSU, but now it is not.

Hopefully, I've spelled it out well enough for you to grasp, as that is all that I'll be giving you.

That's not even remotely close - you're mashing up Lewan bitch slapping an osu fan on South U w/the Gibbons assault story and above all, completely irrelevant.

Love,

no, you're mashing up Lewan assaulting the OSU fan. I'm talking about Lewan threatening Gibbons' accuser. It happened and it's not irrelevant. If people are going to talk about "culture" particularly about an incident with little to no known details, maybe they should have some standing or at least some awareness of problems in their own program before making those comments...

So in order for these to be equals there have to be no charges pressed? I can tell you right now, based on the fact that MSU has suspended the players and removed them from campus housing while the police investigate, this is already way better than the Gibbons case. You may recall but just in case, I'll spell it out for you, the uofm football program AND the administration did nothing about the allegations for the better part of four years. I shouldn't say they did nothing - they actively covered it up. Both the program and the administration were accused of stonewalling and shielding the two players from police. Do you really think the fact that charges weren't pressed is some sort of exoneration? They finally kicked Gibbons off the team for the final game of his career - kudos michigan football! I think you need to learn how to spell before you can spell things out for others.

And who said anything about celebrating? I'm just pointing out that people who live in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones - especially when there aren't any details about the case yet. Don't you think it's premature to be talking about culture here?

I think it's a good idea that you stop commenting - you're on to something there because so far, you've not done yourself any favors.

the Lewan/Gibbons thing happened 2 coaching regimes ago, a different university president ago, and a different AD ago. Not defending them, but they have no connections to the current program. it's not a "culture" thing.

will be interesting to see how Dantonio/MSU handle this mess. They didn't handle the one early in his tenure very well, but all the winning after that made it easy for their fans to forget. Doesn't look like they'll be able to use wins as a distraction anymore!

oh, and there's also this MSU sex abuse scandal playing itself out in the civil and criminal courts right now.

I'm aware of what you're talking about. No doubt it's ugly. But why do a handful of our rivals fans always have to not just throw it in our faces, but make it sound as bad as possible? If I argue over what you left out of it and how you mischaracterized it, I looks like I'm defending Lewan. I don't want to defend him. At the same time, acting like Michigan is a program that tolerated "Lewan threatening Gibbons' accuser" leaves out a mountain of context. What was said, was not said to the accuser, but about her to people that knew her. The statement made it clear that Lewan believed Gibbons to be innocent (and I think the ugliness and stupidity of what was said also reflects the anger of feeling wronged, not covering for someone you think could be guilty). And the statement itself was so ugly, it could not possibly be believed to be literal unless you think publicly announcing premeditated rape is actually a thing people do.

So tell me about the problem with our program. An asshole that none of us like, felt his friend was being wrongly accused of something horrible, and in response he said something really horrible. Technically, it constitutes a threat, but only an idiot would take it to be an actual expression of intent. (I believe there's a legal requirement that something has to be literally believed for it to constitute a threat.) Meanwhile, in the midst of a national change to how sexual assault is being handled on campuses, Michigan is not only one of the 1st to make the change, but goes back and applies it retroactively to an athlete that would have fallen through the cracks under the old rules.

We have a problem? The people that issued the Dear College Letter pointed to Michigan as a school that was setting a good example implementing the changes.

"sending Taylor Lewan to intimidate the victim"

You should be embarrassed that you wrote that garbage.

oh, and there's also this MSU sex abuse scandal playing itself out in the civil and criminal courts right now.

it happened under Rich Rod and carried into Hokes tenure and wasn't resolved until Hoke had been there over 2 years. The administration is also cited as being involved and stonewalling the investigation, so it doesn' treally matter which coach it happened under. So far, it appears MSU is following the right protocol as the investigation unfolds - not something the University of Michigan can claim about the Gibbons/Lewan scandle. Oh, and let's not forget, a few of Lewan's teammates reported the threats Lewan made, but those reports fell on deaf ears. But no way that could have anything to do with "culture".

Edit: if you're going to post links to try to indicate there is some kind of sex abuse problem at MSU, you should probably try to find at least one that indicates the University did something unethical like a cover up or obstructing an investigation, intimidating accusers, etc. So far, in both your examples - both ongoing cases, the University has taken swift and appropriate action.

if anyone should be embarrassed, it's you for writing this. If you followed the thread and came to this conclusion, you're showing the same bias as the knuckleheads who started talking about culture in the first place.

Also, you should be embarrassed for dismissing his comments as horrible, but just a symptom of anger in defense of his friend. What if his teammates didn't report his threat nobody did anything about it and she continued to pursue justice and Lewan did harm her in some way? He's clearly demonstrated he has a temper and a propensity for violence - and is probably or at least at 19, was probably an extreme egomaniac and narcissist to boot. So yeah, I do think he's dumb enough to make a threat to his friends (what you call a public announcement, like he stood in the quad with a megaphone or took out an ad in the school paper) and carry through on it to some level. It's actually so easy to pick apart this post that I'm surprised it came from you and not michchamp or dubbs.
