Some of the comments are funny. If Hoke had let them stay on the team people will say he is soft. If he kicks them off the team then he is to hard on them. Chances are these kids have been busted a few times and already have been told that they were close to being off the team. I am fine with what Hoke did it sends a message to the other players.

As far as I know, they've only been officially suspended, not booted off the team like the initial rumors indicated.

I wouldn't call Hoke soft, but some from other rival fanbases might...or some idiot in the newspaper.

Just because its legal to have in the state does not mean you wont face penalties if you test positive for it. The company I worked for when Michigan passed a medical marijuana law sent around and email letting us know that even if you had a prescription for it if an employee tests positive for it they will be fired. I am sure its the same way for the Colorado athletics even if its legal to have in the state it doesnt mean if an athlete tests positive for it they wont be punished.

I was talking about students in general, not just student athletes. They can ban it from campus, but most students live offcampus, so that's not a big deal.

Obviously, they can restrict athetles from using it and drugtest for such, even though it will cost some money. I doubt they'll be drugtesting the entire student body.

It's not that hard to not break laws. They got what they deserve. Don't be a dumbass and break a law and you can play. It's pretty simple.

The letter from the CU President was a bit more direct but sure, if you are not on school property ... but just in Boulder, you can legally smoke weed (and now, though technically illegal, it happens all the time).

But - you can't possess it on campus and therein lies the distinction.

The letter itself (which I thought I had in my Inbox) went on to talk about the continued efforts to eliminate the "4/20" party on campus and anything supportive of marijuana. This past year, the groundscrew at CU just happened to fertilize the large grass area where the 4/20 party was to be held the day before and used a natural substance made largely with composted fish.

The park smelled like dead fish and the party never panned out.

As a native of this fine state, I am definitely a bit concerned by the likely influx of losers moving here to smoke weed. It's essentially been "legal" anyways but now that it's officially legal, we'll endure another "Green Rush."

A double standard for certain people? Nah. Extenuating circumstances always effect isolated incidents. These extenuating circumstances should be taken into account when deciding what to do with individual situations. I'm not a big fan of blanket punishments that don't take into account extenuating circumstances.

I don't think 1 marijuana related offense should lead to the expulsion of any scholarship athlete from their chosen sport. I did state that some discipline is warranted, I just don't know if kicking them off the team or suspending them from their entire last game is really what is warranted here. The bowl game is supposed to be the celebration of a year of hard work. These guys still put in a year of hard work.

I hear what you're saying, and if this is their first offense I agree the penalty may be harsh, but that's a separate issue. I just think it would be a terrible message to send to the team to let these guys off the hook. Especially because they're seniors.
