Michigan vs PSU Game Thread

Congrats to JB on 200 wins.

Bring on Kentucky! We're unstoppable now!

Out rebounded badly but forced some turnovers and points off turnovers. .

Empty win.

The bright side is that Irvin and Walton stepped up at the end of the game, though. If they ever played to their potential with Wilson and Wagner's improvement, we'd be a solid team. They haven't and probably won't, so whatever. I don't know if I want to watch the massacre when the actual good teams in the conference play us.

Wow.

Monster is right . We only played good last 10 minutes of the game. Glad we fought and came back on won but man we were out rebounded badly by a much younger team.. Psu was aggressive playing the three point line in the first half and both deerk and zak just could not get us in and decent offense. Glad both showed up late but even during our late run it could have been a bigger run if either zak or deerk played smarter and took better shots. Same old crap, out worked for rebounds , and a poorly run offense. Good thing we turned them over and psu collapsed like they always do.

I hope we beat the better big ten teams but I will be shocked if we do so. We need walton to find some sort of rhythm at point ... glad Simpson scored. He looks like he could be a good on defense in a freaking year or two. Had a nice bucket and assist.
Team still stuggles to finsh at the rim.

Very empty win. I am just not happy with this team and the progress.

You guys can thank me. I turned it off when Michigan went down 14 and went to bed. Then Michigan came back

not much of a win, but could've been a really bad loss

I, too, am not happy with this team. Hope they can find some way to get better, but I don't know.

What? You only watched the 2nd half. The game was shit. Penn State did nothing special and we still struggled to beat their shitty ass team.

PSU was also playing two players (Samuel, Watkins) on limited minutes because they have the flu. Watkins is their best rim protector so that is a big deal. Shep Garner was relegated to coming off the bench because of still having the flu. We struggled to beat a short-handed PSU team at home. That is not a good win.

I am just not sure what is wrong with Walton he was 3 for 10 shooting and 2 for 6 from three point land. He does rebound with 6 boards but he consistently slows the offense down and it feels to me that we are better when we are pushing the pace. Psu was giving us the inside in the first half and we just failed to recognize it. Maybe it's confidence with Walton . Sometimes I feel zak is out of control to but he did end up 6 for 12 from the field (0-3 from three). I just don't know.
I feel we should be better then this.

Walton is essentially useless in the pick and roll game. He is zero threat to the ball to the bucket so defenses don't have to honor the drive with him. That makes it easy to cover the big man rolling, slipping, or popping out.

Zak is a mediocre ball handler. He has a great pull-up jumper, but can't always get to it because he doesn't handle the ball well enough. His awkward shot will never allow him to be a consistent three-point shooter. He's a below average athlete as well. He can barely dunk and he's 6'5". Pretty ridiculous.

Add those factors in with our terrible bench and it makes everything more difficult. Starters have to play extended minutes game in and game out. Donnal is a complete defensive and rebounding liability. He brings nothing to the offense other than being able to lay the ball in when the defense forgets about him. I'm not sure if Ibi Watson would even be ready to play in the MAC right now. X is small and his jumper is broke. He has a push shot. Tough to get that over people at this level with his small stature. His defense is improving every game. I like how active he is on that end and he helps create TOs with his active hands.

Duncan is our best bench player and he's barely more than a shooter.

I have no damn idea what has happened to Rahk. His confidence looks destroyed as he never goes to the hoop aggressively anymore. He's settling for threes and I just don't get that. That's never been his game. He had one aggressive drive and finish last night where he looked like himself. That's very rare this season.

Wilson and Wagner are the only bright spots on the squad. I hope they keep getting better because I really don't want to see these guys go on a 10 game losing streak in the Big 10.

Simpson's play over the last 5 or so has been a nice (relative) bright spot. Agree his shot looks terrible, and that's obviously an issue, but he has been a solid ballhandler, has dropped some beautiful dimes, and looks like he's going to be a hell of a defender. You can see his confidence growing. He has hit a mid range jumper and a floater recently that gives me hope he can turn into a moderate mid-range scoring threat, but yeah, that 3 point shot...

As bad as it might sound, we might just have to muddle through until Wilson and Wagner are seniors and hope we get some developments or diamonds coming through in the classes behind them. Stinks, because it makes no sense, but I'm seeing nothing from the upper classmen.

Hopefully Jordan Poole, Isaiah Livers, and Charles Matthews are ready to contribute next year. Matthews will be good on defense no matter what, but he needs to improve his shot dramatically during this transfer/redshirt year. He can drive it, but needs the threat of the jumpshot to go along with that.

Charles Matthews?

The transfer from Kentucky, athletic wing.

I really like the tape I've seen on livers...looks like Belein may have hit on one there.
