The NCAA will allow juice boxes OR orange slices, but not both. You've got to self report that minor violation. If they get wind of it through the media, they'll conduct a full investigation. Meanwhile, that one kid on that Ohio team is obviously at least 14 years old but they won't do a thing about it.

If Vic starts running satellite camps in neighborhood communities we'll know that he's not on the level. EDIT: Vic's kid clearly was a dominating player. Obviously he was working with him outside of specified practice times. This will come back to haunt the organization.

Well ...at the post-season pool party, all of the parents approached me at some point about coaching again and the team seemed to all have a good season. My wife did at one point accuse me of recruiting back in March, but since they group teams by school, all I was really doing was an awareness campaign so that all the kids were aware that I was putting the team together.

We installed shotgun, motion and even audibled at the line a few times which no other 3rd grade team did ...but the 4th/5th grade teams do (and the rules change, allowing for blitzing, etc for the older kids).

One referee whose real job is as a local TV reporter for the Fox affiliate asked me after one of the games if I was on a HS staff or coached somewhere else.. lol The coach of the 49ers who we played and beat yesterday 33-6 was at the same pool after and came over to congratulate us and said, "man ...you kicked our ass!" and made mention of how well coached the team was and how well we executed.

So hopefully the Lions wristbands and small trophies I bought on Amazon don't violate any regulations or cause undue scrutiny to the program. Of course my team is a bunch of public school kids and the league of 12 teams has a number of private schools with much deeper pockets.

Funny because that part is definitely true! He created an imaginary league ...the KNFL (Kids NFL) when he was 5yrs old and we've been playing simulated games in the backyard for years including some of the plays in our LIONS playbook.

We (He) plays for the Denver Bees whose helmets look like Michigan's but are black/gold (like a bee) rather than Blue.. Our biggest rival -- the Ohio Grasshoppers. Other teams in the league over the years included -

The Chicago Brickhouses ...known for their defense
The Florida Mussels ...yes, he thought that was funny
The Nebraska Flames...
The Colorado Eagles ...
The Carlsbad Seagulls ...we played that game on the beach in Carlsbad

And at one point, because the Bees "couldn't afford" him, he played a year with the Colorado Tech Buffaloes ..before being traded back to the Bees

He has written sports columns on the league and really the whole thing has been so fun.. Knowing that he's now getting too old to play in the backyard with me any more and that he will probably lose interest in the Bees and the league he made over these years, it's been very rewarding as his Dad to coach him "for real."

And as one Dad told me at the pool yesterday, "Little Vic is clearly the MVP!" He wasn't the most athletic kid on the team and we really had a number of kids score and contribute, but he's my little field general barking at the other players to get them into position and make sure they know their assignment.


Hard to beat being a Dad when you have these moments!
