Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Things are getting ready to heat up in baseball. The World Series ended just 3 weeks ago, followed by a mandatory “quiet period” in which teams could make no moves outside of their organization. And during the week of awards, MLB requests that teams not interrupt the proceedings.
It all started in earnest on November 5th, 2.5 weeks ago. Teams are currently focusing on getting their rosters in order, determining their needs. Trades and signings will happen soon.
On November 4, contract options were picked up – or not. The Tigers, as expected, did not pick up Casey Mize’s $3.1 mill option and he will return to the regular arbitration process.

For the first time in years, no players had opt out contracts with Detroit.
As well, the 4th was the day for qualifying offers to be made. The Tigers had no players who were eligible.
It is this time of year that is crucial to building the roster. Here are the dates to keep in mind as we follow Scott Harris’ moves.

GIVING THANKS – Part One.
Totally Tigers

We’re giving thanks this week. And if you think about it, Detroit Tiger fans have been hard-pressed to find things to be grateful about until this year.
But all of that is going to change starting today and running through tomorrow.
We’re going to look back over the past year and think about what we were grateful to see about the Tigers.
But there’s a hitch – as there always is here at Totally Tigers. You didn’t think we’d let you skate by and mail it in, did you?
Today, we’d like for you to consider this question:
What 1 episode, development, goal, vision, etc. were you most grateful to see during this 2024 season?
We’re asking that you not name people today. That exercise will happen tomorrow.

We’re looking for a singular event, a progression of some type, the checking off of boxes, reaching a goal, etc. It can be about the franchise overall, a department, offensive/pitching/defense achievement, etc.
Please identify the event/area and tell us in 3 sentences or less why you picked it for giving thanks.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Since Scott Harris came on board in October 2022, the Tigers have been rebuilding their franchise from the ground floor up. The roster was changed significantly and last year, the Detroit Tigers earned a playoff spot after a full decade of missing out.
The team has stated that the priority is on the young guys and as such, any trades and free agent signings have been relatively insignificant.
Where this team has made the biggest and most lasting impact is the signing of non-players to guide this organization. The team’s improvement can be traced to the actions made in part by these 3 individuals:
Chris Fetter
Scott Harris
A. J. Hinch
All have made huge contributions to getting the Tigers back on track. But which one do you feel has made the biggest and most positive impressions?
Which one of these 3 candidates do you believe deserves the most credit?
Which one is crucial to the continued success of this organization?
Which one of these men was the best signing?

Which one of these men has been the best signing so far?
1. Chris Fetter

2. Scott Harris

3. A. J. Hinch

SATURDAY SURVEY.

The 2025 season is about to start and the Tigers have a lot of new faces in spring training. But how many of them will be making the roster? And will they all make a difference during the season?

Scott Harris acquired a lot of new players, signing most of them to minor league contracts. Those earning MLB paychecks are:
Alex Cobb (SP) – currently on IL
Jack Flaherty (SP)
Tommy Kahnle (RP)
Gleyber Torres (2B)

Of note are the following 2 players, signed to minor league contracts with invites to spring training. Neither is on the 40-man roster.
Andrew Chafin (RP)
Jahmai Jones (OF)

The Tigers also pursued Alex Bregman but lost out to the Red Sox. They were also linked to Pete Alonso but he returned to the Mets. And it was disclosed that they were interested in Anthony Santander but did not offer him a contract.

How well did Scott Harris do? What grade would you give him for player acquisitions over the winter?
What grade would you give Scott Harris for his off-season work?

SCOTT’S SCORES.
Totally Tigers

Detroit Tigers’ PoBO, Scott Harris has officially been on the job for just a little over 2 official seasons and 3 off-seasons.
We’ve got a good sample size now to evaluate the moves he’s made to fill the MLB-level roster. A couple years to analyze and to see how he measures up in acquiring players.

Canha, Lee, Sweeney, & Urshela belong in the could go either way. I wouldn't call the Bregman situation a wise move, he offered him a 6 year deal. I would call it a possible lucky move that Bregman didn't sign it. I would also argue that him not having a backup plan for 3B was a pretty big blunder. Signing Keith to the extension is also looking like a blunder, but it's too early to tell.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Now that Scott Harris has been through 2 full seasons as PoBO, it’s time to reflect upon his track record. Today, covering his best player acquisitions.
In determining them, I’m working with players who have an established track record. I’m not including players with just 2-3 months under their belts. I am considering those with 1+ years of service in Detroit.
As this is Friday, these are my top 5 success stories:

RISING THROUGH THE RANKS.

Scott Harris has a pitching problem. These are pitchers he’s acquired & drafted.

Starters: Kenta Maeda-Michael Lorenzen-Jack Flaherty-Alex Cobb-Chris Paddack-Charlie Morton

Bullpen:-Tyler Holton-Chasen Shreve-Andrew Vasquez-Shelby Miller-John Brebbia-Tommy Kahnle-Carlos Hernandez-Bailey Horn-Luke Jackson-Rafael Montero-Brenan Hanifee-Andrew Chafin-Sean Guenther -Dietrich Enns-Geoff Hartlieb.

Pitchers drafted within top 10 rounds:
2023: Paul Wilson rd 3 Jaden Hamm rd 5 Jatnk Diaz rd 8 Hayden Minton rd 9
Andrew Sears rd 10
2024: Owen Hall rd 2 Ethan Schiefelbein rd 2 Josh Randall rd 3 Michael Massey rd 4 Ethan Sloan Rd 8 Zach Swanson Rd 9 RJ Sales Rd 10
No 2025 picks because they haven’t debuted. And it’s still too early to call any of these guys “bad picks” but it’s not promising. They all mostly look like AT BEST back end rotation pieces or they have serious injuries.

THE OTHER ROSTER.

Detroit Tiger fans have been following the recent trade acquisitions and multiple roster moves lately.
But have you been following all the moves made with the other roster?
