I figure i will get some self help tools for guys on this board in case they have a PC with windows OS that may have troubles with viruses and such.

www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Combo Fix:

This is more or less a killer root kit remover that also yanks reg hacks too. One of the best and free tools out there to remove infections from PC's. The link listed is one of two places to get it from that is reputable and not a BS site meant to infect your PC.

Process Explorer:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

A real process monitor that give you a little more control of what is Running on your PC. This will tell you if you have a rouge process which i usually run to kill processes at start up if you have an infected PC that will not let you launch combofix to remove a rootkit.

Malwarebytes:

A Cnet download

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

This is a decent tool to clean out some of the malware that gets on your PC from surfing. I usually run it to clear out a PC after combofix for the stragglers that tend to hand on in the system. Without the full version it will not active protect but can be manually updated and ran as much as you want.

Hoplite, I am not that computer savvy.
What I did notice from earlier today was the time to click in the message box and or right click to post a link was taking about 10 seconds. Now it is fast and like the last two days.
Did you run anything with the links you posted here to fix ot from another source?
Thanks.

That could be a couple of things. Something like a virus scanner on your PC could have started its scheduled scan which would bog down your speed until it completes. Or it could be a lag in your internet connection for a short period as they are usually inconsistent connections and can lag and speed up at times depending on the type of connection you use. Malwarebytes might clear out a few things that may be slowing your PC down if you wanted to run that. When it happens you can also launch your task manager to see if your CPU is having high usage or process explorer could also let you know this too along with what exactly is doing this.

Things I do first before/after installing a Windows OS:

Partition the HDD so that ONLY the actual OS resides in the first one, all other software is installed in a separate partition, which makes defragmenting faster and more efficient, and uninstalling programs easier.

Move the Windows "page file", which is the equivalent of the Linux OS' "swap file" into its very own partition, preferably on another partitioned HDD and in the first partition for faster access. The page file being created with same max/min size of twice the size of the PC or laptops' physical RAM memory.

Download and install CCleaner in order to wipe and delete leftover temp files from installs/uninstalls, cookies, history and Flash LSOs, after browsing the internet with my browsers of choice.

Download and install Clam AV, which is a free "cloud based" antivirus software program that can be run alongside another installed AV software like Avira, Avast, ect...making it so there are more options to stop viruses, trojans, worms, and the like. Also connect to the internet with a router for a hardware firewall protection, and download and install a free software firewall, such as Comodo or Zone Alarm.

Download and install ZSoft Uninstaller, which is the BEST freeware program that I have found, that not only uninstalls software programs, but ALSO will delete ALL of the Windows registry entries that the default Windows uninstaller or other software programs will often leave behind. It can be installed into a Windows HDD partition, OR optionally into a thumbdrive for portability as well.

Backup the Windows Registry AND backup the Windows OS with a dedicated EXTERNAL HDD.

I could write a booklike blog here detailing all of the stuff that I do with Windows to tweak , hack and improve it, but IMO, everyone who is less than a tech geek, who uses such a juicy target OS for attacks by hackers, trojans, worms, and viruses, that is and uses a very vulnerable flavor/version of a Windows OS on the internet SHOULD buy a used Windows-based instruction-guide book from Amazon or eBay or a bookstore or library to LEARN about how to use it PROPERLY to stay safe and secure. There are also many websites online that also have help guides, of course.

CopyTrans Suite:

I do not have a link for this and would have uploaded it but it is about 50mb which is past the limit. This will pull all the music in an ipod or iphone with a GUI that will make things real easy pulling songs off and dumping it in to your itunes dir. works with older devices too so if you have that older ipod just grab this and you can get a backup of your music files.

It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

This website checks to see if your IP addy has been hacked by cyber-criminals. It is really for businesses and organizations, with internal networks, but I thought that I would link it "just in case" one or more of our members her might own a business, or is a home user and wants to check their own out of curiosity:

Yes, yes it it. I tried getting a new Dell to use for some work stuff I didn't want to hook my computer into. I took it too Best Buy to get my $ back and they said I couldn't return it because I was 4-5 days over the time to return.

They said they could take it back if it had something wrong with it. "It has a windows OS" Was all they had to hear, and I got my money back.

Yeah, Mac users never have to worry about getting malware, trojans, or viruses, on their computers, or need to get in touch with support ..that kinda stuff only happens to Windows users...heh!! ::)

The most safe, secure and protected OS on the planet, better than Windows, Macs , and Linux, and is what I use when I want to be as anonymous and secure as possible, as it is a Unix-based distro, and best of all, it is free:

My point is I have had issues with a shit load of Windows machines, for programming they suck, for engineering they suck, autocad on windows sucks, blue screen of death sucks, buying their software sucks, uprgrading the OS sucks, not having the drivers one you upgrade sucks, shit not working sucks, empoyees waiting to get their computers back sucks, time lost (which means money lost) because comptuers are always broke sucks. having a full time IT guys because windows sucks suck.

I am sure I have more reasons why it sucks, but don't have all day to write them down.
