2023 trade deadline

^^^^ Why did Harris begin the trading process with ERod just ONE WEEK before the deadline? Why not one month, if this was such a "complex situation?" ^^^^

Holly, the apologist sage, mentioned that in passing and did not include this in her questions. I think it's the most-important question to ask.

Its now said he would have accepted but wanted more financial aka more money. So this family stuff is bull.

Now that Eduardo Rodriguez is staying with the #Tigers, the Tigers have no choice but to try to re-work his contract to assure that he doesn't opt out after this season. He has 3 years, $49 million left on his deal after this season.
Bob Nightingale USAToday

The Detroit Tigers have no choice? Oh yes, they do! From the latest reports of him on board for the trade and then shocking both Harris and Friedman with his 180 turnaround and saying "no", they can diplomatically urge him to opt out.
Friedman said ?There was every reason to believe that he would (sign), through various conversations.? Take this disaster and combine it with his 2-month team ghosting and game where he ignored his catcher, you've got someone who always puts himself first.

Turning The Corner Tigers Podcast 122: Detroit Tigers Swing & Miss on Eduardo Rodriguez Trade. 32 minutes.

The Detroit Tigers were expected to make moves during the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline. When the dust settled Michael Lorenzen was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eduardo Rodriguez stays in Detroit. The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen and co-host Kieran Steckley discuss what and why the moves or lack thereof happened.

Then a statement released by Rodriguez?s agent muddied the waters a bit. Gene Mato also cited family reasons for Rodriguez?s decision but went on to suggest that a deal with the Dodgers could have been reached if there had been more time to negotiate.

What were they negotiating?
Rodriguez wouldn?t say when asked after his start on Wednesday, but The Athletic reported Thursday that Mato was seeking an additional season worth $20 million if Rodriguez opted to stay in Los Angeles following the season.

That was apparently unpalatable to the Dodgers, who would have already been accepting a certain degree of risk if they made the deal. Following this season, Rodriguez has three years and $49 million remaining on the five-year deal he signed with the Tigers prior to the 2022 season.

You knew it was coming. I told you yesterday that it would.

And sure enough, the details of the failed trade between the Tigers and Dodgers are leaking out.

Too many people left with egg on their faces. Too many experienced people for something like this to happen.

Too many people shocked at the outcome.

Too many PoBos making stifled diplomatic comments to explain what happened.

Many of you knew the facts as presented didn?t add up. It meant there were rogue factors at play.

And now some of the people who were involved in the work are speaking anonymously. They?re clarifying that ERod was a willing trade partner and that both teams communicated often and effectively with him. And that his rationale for blocking the trade doesn?t hold water.

Let?s summarize what really happened. Here?s what various members of the media have verified:

E-Rod and his agent did this....

The Tigers have claimed left-handed reliever Andrew Vasquez off waivers from the Phillies.

The 29-year-old posted a 2.27 ERA with 14 walks and 34 strikeouts in 39.2 innings across 30 games for the Phillies this season.

Vasquez doesn?t have any minor-league options remaining.

Outfielder Nick Solak has been designated for assignment to make room for Andrew Vasquez on the 40-man roster.

Vasquez is primarily slider, fastball and curve. Slider generates a 18.1% WHIFF rate, fastball, 26.7%

Earlier this week, the Detroit Tigers lost out on trading Eduardo Rodriguez to the LA Dodgers.

ERod and his agent were willing participants in negotiating a move to Los Angeles and did not find his no-trade clause to be an issue in the beginning. Despite negotiations being green-lighted throughout the week, Rodriguez and his agent surprised all parties by turning down the deal with less than an hour before the trade deadline. That prevented both the Tigers and Dodgers from pivoting to a backup deal with another team that they had assembled ? but not finalized.

ERod?s explanation was that he did not feel comfortable moving to a first place team that was expected to make the playoffs. A team in which 3 of his closest friends also played. An explanation that surprised many GMs and managers. He said he loved Detroit but wouldn?t commit to staying beyond this year.

His agent explained that the decision was made in order for his client to remain close to his family. (There are conflicting reports about whether his family actually live in Detroit or Miami during the season.) It was a move that would only last for 2 months.

As we learned later, the negotiations were based upon about ERod?s desire to add more money and perks to the contract. When he didn?t get them all, that?s when he invoked his no-trade clause.

It is the 3rd time that Eduardo has been tied to controversy while with the Tigers, including last year?s ghosting of the team for almost 2 months due to marital problems.
So what do you think about how ERod handled the trade deadline negotiations?

How did Eduardo Rodriguez handle the trade deadline negotiations?

1. He had every right to make the decision he did.

2. His unpredictable nature is a cause of concern.

3. He was unprofessional and disrespectful of the Tigers and Dodgers.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Last week, the Detroit Tigers were unable to trade Eduardo Rodriguez at the deadline. There was controversy attached to both sides. To the Tigers and Dodgers for not getting a deal done, and to Rodriguez and his agent for the perception that they pulled the rug out from under the 2 teams at the very last minute.

After this year, he has 3 years remaining on his contract that are considered well-priced. But it is widely expected that he will opt out of his contract in order to pursue a newer, higher-priced one. If he does leave, the Tigers will receive no compensation.

We did learn that ERod is looking for a contract that will pay him at least $20 mill/year. And considering that he is already 30 years old, he will want a longer contract to take him to potentially the end of his career. Probably somewhere around 5 years with a potential option year.

Currently, he has 3 years left that averages out to $15 mill/year.

If Rodriguez does not stay with the team under the current contract conditions, there is only 1 other option remaining.

To extend ERod.

But should the Tigers?

Of course, he?s been their #1 starter. But also consider that ERod has shown his unpredictable side, first by ghosting his team for almost 2 months last year and then creating a ?me-first? moment this year by refusing to coordinate a game strategy with his catcher on a start day. And now, a botched trade deal at the last minute.

On the other hand, if the Tigers don?t extend him, do they have another veteran starting pitcher who can anchor the rotation? With Michael Lorenzen now gone, will one of the other pitchers step up? Will some of the promising younger talent come into their own in 2024? Will the Tigers be able to trade for another dependable arm to fill the hole left by ERod?

Will the pitching team of Fetter, Nieves and Lund be able to continue to work their magic with the rest of the starting pitchers?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Ready?

Should the Tigers extend Eduardo Rodriguez's contract?

1. Yes, keep him and extend the contract.

2. No, allow him to opt out and leave the team.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

In the aftermath of the MLB trade deadline, there has been some discussion about the Tigers not trading Jose Cisnero or Chasen Shreve.

But how realistic was it that they could even be traded? Both stated that they did not expect to get traded.

Cisnero and Shreve are 2-month rentals which greatly diminishes their value. Cisnero has a 4.01 ERA and is 34 years old. He does have 5 different pitches and his walk and strikeout rates were better this year. Shreve has a 5.03 ERA and has a career-high hits-per-9-innings and is 33 years old. His splitter earns high marks in strikeouts and chase rate.

The combined salary for both Cisnero and Shreve is $3.5 mill. Both have contracts that expire after this year.

In comparison, only a handful of teams ? all contenders ? traded for relievers. The 2 top trades did not involve rentals and returned single prospects who ranked #9 and #29 in their respective former organizations.

What could the Tigers have gotten for Cisnero and Shreve if there was a market for them?

Is it better to keep these players on your roster for the rest of the year if you can?t get a comparable value in return?

If they were traded, did the Tigers have other arms in the farm system to replace them?

Is it better to trade just to say you made a trade or is the better move sometimes the one you don?t make?

These are the questions to ask yourself and others as we ponder the conditions that make for a good or bad trade. Let?s kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

Is it better to trade a secondary player knowing you won't get a comparable value in return just to be able to say you made a trade?

1. Yes, trade him no matter what the return is.

2. No, keep him and focus on allowing the team to finish the year as strong as possible.
