Game 27 Rays vs Tigers April 30, 2018

Jordan Zimmermann allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings, but the Tampa Bay Rays broke a scoreless tie in the ninth inning against closer Shane Greene to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Monday night at Comerica Park.

After Zimmermann departed and reliever Daniel Stumpf pitched a scoreless eighth inning, Shane Greene walked the lead-off man in the ninth, then gave up home runs to C.J. Cron and Brad Miller.

The game seemed an unlikely pitchers' duel, as both Zimmermann (7.91) and Faria (6.33) entered sporting hefty ERAs. But neither starter was seriously threatened.

Zimmermann allowed the fewest hits since his debut for the Tigers on April 6, 2016 (excluding the game earlier this month in which he was knocked out in the first inning due to injury).

Matt Duffy, who led off the seventh inning with a single, was the only Ray to reach scoring position against Zimmermannn. He was stranded at third base when Zimmermann got Joey Wendle to ground out to end the inning.

The Tigers had a few more opportunities against Faria. Jose Iglesias doubled in the third, but was stranded. In the next inning, Nicholas Castellanos doubled and reached third on a wild pitch, but Victor Martinez tapped out weakly to the pitcher and James McCann struck out to end the inning.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth after Rays reliever Chaz Roe hit two batters and JaCoby Jones reached on an infield single.

Roe, who was seeking his first career save, gave way to Jose Alvarado, who also had zero career saves. (Rays loser Alex Colome was getting the night off).

After Victor Martinez singled sharply up the middle to score two runs, James McCann worked the count to 3-2 before flying out to left-center and John Hicks drew a 3-2 walk to re-load the bases.

But Alvarado got Dixon Machado to ground out after a dramatic at-bat to end the game.

The Tigers (11-16) have lost five of their last six, while the Rays (13-14) have won nine of their last 10.

It was Zimmermann's best start since he allowed six hits in seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees in New York on Aug. 2, 2017. The last time he'd allowed two hits over seven shutout innings was his first start for the Tigers, on April 8, 2016, a 4-0 win over the Yankees.

Iglesias followed up his stellar defensive play in the top of the third with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the inning.
Nicholas Castellanos had a double in the fourth inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He finished 1-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in the ninth
JaCoby Jones went 1-for-3 as the leadoff hitter. He had a single in the sixth, then got picked off. He was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth and stole second base.
Niko Goodrum pinch-hit for Victor Reyes (0-for-2) in the bottom of the ninth and struck out swinging
Jeimer Candelario went 1-for-3 with a walk.
