Turning The Corner Tigers Podcast 47: Tigers In The Hall Of Fame. 72 minutes.

Turning The Corner: A show about the Detroit Tigers with Cody Stavenhagen & Kieran Steckley.
The Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed a new member last week, but left out the likes of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling. Is Jim Leyland worthy of enshrinement? The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen and co-host Kieran Steckley discuss. Other topics include coaching staff moves (40:00) and Jackson Jobe (49:00).

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The final results of voting for the Baseball Hall of Fame was completed last week. Once again, the issue of PED use was front and center, as it has been for a decade.

Whether or not to vote in players who cheated by using PEDs will continue to be a significant issue. For example, Alex Rodriquez just completed his first year of eligibility and has 9 more years on the ballot. As well, players such as Barry Bonds and Rogers Clemens did not get elected but will now get consideration from one of the ERA committees in the near future.

Baseball has also seen the introduction of ?legalized? gambling. The growth of sports betting is now creating a threat to the integrity of the game. No one has officially explained how corruption will not impact how the game will be played. Even if players aren?t allowed to bet, they could conceivably be telling others how and when to place them.

Which controversy is the greater threat to the game? PED use that skews the stats, alters history and changes the game or betting on baseball games?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

Which is the bigger threat to the integrity of the game?

1. Betting on games.

2. Inducting PED users into the Hall of Fame.

Tigers Pod Of Fame Podcast: Episode 45: Lou Whitaker with Cody Stavenhagen. 48 minutes.

Jim is joined by Cody Stavenhagen, Detriot Tigers beat writer for The Athletic, to breakdown the hall of fame candidacy of former Tigers Second Baseman Lou Whitaker.
Jim and John first discuss how hard it is to talk about Whitaker without bringing up his double-play partner Alan Trammell, who recently was voted into Cooperstown in 2018 (6:38).
Next, they talk about the 1984 World Series, similarities between Whitaker and current HOF candidate Scott Rolen, and Whitaker's eye-popping WAR (10:31).
Finally, they discuss why Whitaker only won four gold gloves despite being one of the better defensive second basemen in history and how that impacts his candidacy (33:26), before coming to a conclusion on whether or not Whitaker deserves a plaque in Cooperstown (40:06).

Lou Whitaker's rWAR is higher than any eligible non tainted player not in the OF whose full career was since 1901, when the AL became a major league.
Every other player with a higher rWAR was either:
- not eligible yet.
- tainted (by PEDs or gambling).
- played before 1900.

I agree that Rose should be in.

If you let in Rose then You have to let Shoeless Joe Jackson in too.

The Ortiz in the HOF is just a big PR move, started by the huge pile of shit known as Rob Manfred.

I forget where it is and in which story but the other big name steroid players are supposedly on some ballot in the next year or two. They will probably get in and another reason, that the game I love, for this old Tigers fan to take another step away from the game I love since I was 5 to 6 years old.
