Tigers 2022 Off Season for FA signings, trades, tender, nontender, Rule 5, to 2023

It's the day after the World Series and the Detroit Tigers are making moves. Robin Lund, pitching coach at U of Iowa will be asst. pitching coach. There are ties to Chris Fetter.

Interesting, asst. pitching coach Juan Nieves still holds that slot. Will the Tigers have 2 of them or will there be some shuffling or re-imagining of that position?

It gets even better. The Detroit Tigers new asst. pitching coach, Robin Lund, was a professor in kinesiology where he worked in biomechanics. His research focused on improving athletic performance. As a college coach, he is credited with sending 7 of his pitchers to the majors.

LHP Andrew Chafin has officially declined his player option and is now a free agent.

January 24: The 2023 Hall of Fame class will be announced during a live MLB Network broadcast at 6 p.m. ET. The ballot is revealed in November, votes are compiled, and the results are announced later during the offseason.

WINTER MEETINGS
December 5-8: Winter Meetings in San Diego. The Winter Meetings are often the busiest time of the offseason for trades and free agent signings. The meetings themselves are less the focus of attention than the ?Hot Stove? action surrounding the meetings.

December 7: Rule 5 Draft. By rule, players selected in the Rule 5 Draft must remain on their new team?s MLB roster all season in 2023, otherwise they must go through waivers and be offered back to their original team.

Last year?s Rule 5 Draft was canceled due to the owners? lockout, In the two years previous, the Tigers selected Victor Reyes and Akil Baddoo, who remain on the big league roster in Detroit.

INTERNATIONAL SIGNING PERIOD
January 15: The 2023 international signing period begins. Without an agreement to hold an international amateur draft, international amateur players may sign with any team, subject to individual team signing bonus limits. The signing period used to run from July 2nd to June 25th each year, but MLB and the MLBPA agreed to push the start of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 signing periods back to January because of the pandemic, and now the new January start is permanent. Here is MLB.com?s list of 2023?s top 30 international prospects.

ARBITRATION
We?ve mentioned that the date for teams to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players is November 18, 2022. Those not tendered become free agents, and those tendered an offer head down this path.

January 13: Salary Figures are exchanged between teams and arbitration-eligible players The two sides can agree to a contract of any size after filing salary figures, and the vast majority of arbitration-eligible players agree to a contract before the filing deadline. Matt Swartz and MLB Trade Rumors released their salary arbitration projections in October.

January 30 to February 17: Arbitration hearings. for players and teams who do not agree on a salary for the 2023 season. Each side states their case ? hearings can be contentious because the team essentially outlines the player?s shortcomings and explains why he deserves a lower salary than he believes ? and the three-person panel picks either the salary the player filed or the salary the team filed, not a compromise number. For the first time, if the parties agree on a salary without going to a hearing, the contract becomes guaranteed for the season.

PLAY BALL!
About February 14: Pitchers and catchers report to Spring training camps in Florida and Arizona. Each team sets their own reporting dates. Cactus League and Grapefruit League games begin on February 24, 2023

March 8-21: World Baseball Classic. The WBC returns next spring following a pandemic-related hiatus. The tournament expands to 20 teams this time around and games will be played in Taiwan, Japan, Miami, and Phoenix. No games in Southern California this year. Pool play begins March 8 in Taichung and the Championship Game will be held on March 21 in Miami.

March 30: Opening Day! All 30 clubs begin play on Opening Day. A more balanced schedule will be featured with fewer games within divisions and every team will play at least one series against every other team in both leagues in 2023.

It appears Daniel Norris and Tucker Barnhart have elected free agency.

New President of Baseball Operations (PoBO) Scott Harris has only been on the job for 5 weeks, yet he has made more changes to the team during that time than the past 3 owners combined.

Welcome to the 21st Century, Detroit Tigers!

There is much that needs to be done but I believe it?s safe to say that we can now say ?buh bye? to the Tigers of old. You know ? the ones who were always last to adopt anything new (like analytics) or stay at the forefront (the importance of the bullpen) of the sport?s trends and strategies.

The Tigers now aren?t just simply hiring new people to take the places of the ones who are no longer there. They are creating and expanding the structural and procedural parts of the franchise and taking the Tigers where they have never been before.

In fact, it appears that they are leading the way in several categories within MLB.....

MLB free agents: Tigers rumored to be interested in catcher Willson Contreras.
The long-time Cubs backstop will be a fairly hot commodity as he reaches free agency for the first time.

No thanks. Signing a 31 year old catcher to a 5 year contract is stupid

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

New PoBO Scott Harris has told us to expect significant changes over the next couple of months. Part of those changes will involve the roster.

The Tigers have a ton of needs. More starting pitching, a #1 catcher, third baseman and at least 1 new corner outfielder. Potentially, they may also have to fill 1B and 2B.

Essentially, the roster requires not just a tweaking but an actual overhaul.

Where the problems lie is threefold. There is a farm system that has little depth and few ready solutions. And there are really no viable trade pieces that will bring back the necessary solutions.

To fill the needs will require serious money and it?s unlikely Harris will have carte blanche when it comes to spending.

However, the Tigers need to greatly improve their performance in 2023.

How shall they accomplish this goal?

Should they focus on signing 1-2 higher end free agents or should they try to upgrade every position with better players who are less expensive?
What do you think?

What is the best way for the Tigers to improve their roster and performance for the 2023 season?

1. Sign 1-2 higher end free agents.

2. Improve every position with better players who are less expensive.

VOTE

Among Willson Contreras? potential free-agent suitors ? if he rejects the QO, as expected ? the Tigers would give up a 3rd-round pick to sign him;
the Cardinals or Astros would forfeit a 2nd-round pick and $500,000 in international bonus pool money.

Scott Harris is going to take his time in the general manager search.

"I don't have a firm deadline. I'm planning on holding rolling interviews in the coming weeks and months. At some point, an individual is going to stand out, and we're going to hire that individual."

Scott Harris said the #Tigers have "gotten a lot of calls" from teams looking to acquire relief pitchers in trades. He described the GM meetings as a "feeling-out period" of the offseason. No deals appear imminent.
Willing to trade prospects?
Harris: "Absolutely."

Scott Harris on free-agent reliever Andrew Chafin: "He earned the right to opt out. That's really impressive to me. I have spoken with his agents. I will continue to speak with his agents. ... We're going to keep in touch with him and see if we can bring him back."

Any hint on what players the Tigers will try to acquire? Scott Harris said he's meeting with "every agent" in Las Vegas.
"We're going to shop in all aisles. Whether we actually purchase in all aisles is another question, but we're certainly going to be shopping everywhere."

Scott Harris on Comerica Park dimensions: "As I've said, we're looking at everything. I don't have an update to share. I know how the pitchers feel and how the hitters feel. There's a strong difference of opinion between those two groups."

Asked if he was willing to trade prospects if the situation called for it, Scott Harris responded without hesitation: "Absolutely. I don't think we can rule out any way to get better."

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris laid out three offseason needs during an interview here in Las Vegas: left-handed bat in the infield, right-handed bat in the outfield and pitching.

Scott Harris said "feeling-out period" on trades has already begun.
"There has been quite a bit of interest in our players. We've gotten a fair amount of inbound calls, which is always a good thing."

Scott Harris on Spencer Torkelson: "We're still really bullish on Tork...We don't view (first base) as a position of long-term need for us. But this winter -- at that position and every other position -- we're going to look for ways to get better."

Scott Harris said today he expects Javier B?ez to be the Tigers? Opening Day SS.

Sounds like position players ? RH OF, LH IF ? will be among the team?s top priorities. Also a lot of indications Harris is open to anything in building the roster.

Plenty more to come from Vegas.

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said he expects Javier B?ez to be the starting shortstop for 2023 Opening Day.
