Tigers @ Braves 9-30-16 Game #159

http://m.tigers.mlb.com/det/video/search?team_id=116&tagName=Detroit Tigers
Webvideo Highlights of the Tigers 6 - 2 win over the braves.

Miguel Cabrera — Two huge bombs of home runs to center field accounted for three of the Tigers’ first 4 runs.

Daniel Norris — The only run he allowed was a solo home run. He struck out 8 and allowed 4 hits and 2 walks.

Ian Kinsler -- Ho-hum, Another leadoff home run.

Justin Upton — Clubbed his 30th home run a mile.

Yankees — Hey, letting Baltimore score all those runs is not cool. Not cool at all.

Stats and reactions:
With his second home run Miguel Cabrera hit his 70th extra-base hit of the season. Miggy became just the ninth player in MLB history to have 70 or more extra-base hits for at least 10 seasons.
Willie Mays leads with 13, and Hank Aaron had 12. Albert Pujols, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth each had 11. Barry Bonds, Stan Musial, and Jimmy Foxx also have 10.

Hank Greenberg’s name comes up a lot. With the home run Cabrera passed Hank Greenberg (2,950) in total bases with Detroit. Cabrera stands at 2,952 total bases, good for ninth in franchise history.
In 62 games since July 20, not including Friday, Cabrera hit .352 with a 1.080 OPS, 18 homers and 52 RBIs.

Justin Upton reached the 30 home run mark for the second time in his career.
Upton’s numbers since Aug. 20 are not safe for work. After the home run — his 17th since then -- his slugging average reached .787. SLUGGING.
Upton's 12 home runs in September are the most by a Tiger since Hank Greenberg hit 16 in September 1946.
It would have been nice to see him more consistent throughout the year but it’s amazing to see how high his peak is when he’s on his game. And the home runs are immaculate to watch.

Daniel Norris struck out five straight batters from the fifth to the seventh innings. He threw a season-high 114 pitches. Which was fine.
That makes 19 straight starts Norris has allowed three runs or fewer, which leads the AL.

Amazing stuff Ron. Thanks !!!

What do you guys think about Zimmerman starting today? good idea or not?

I'm glad that they stuck with him as a starter. I know several here said he sucked and should be in the pen. Now that he's healthy he's clearly got the stamina. He was throwing 96 in that last inning.

Certainly, Norris has pitched well the last 7 starts. I will point out that DET has scored 6 or more runs in 5 of those starts and 4 runs in each of the other 2 runs. Citing DET's record when Norris pitched, without pointing this out isn't representing the whole picture.

Average Runs Last 7 Starts

Norris (6-1) 6.43 Runs
A. Sanchez (4-3) 5.43 Runs
Boyd (4-3) 5.00 Runs
Zimmermann (2-5) 5.00 Runs

Verlander (5-2) 4.14 Runs (12 runs last game, 2.83 Runs previous 6 starts)
Fulmer (3-4) 4.00 Runs

Completed 7 Innings

Verlander 5 of last 7
Fulmer 2 of last 7
Zimmerman 2 of last 7
A. Sanchez 2 of last 7
Boyd 2 of last 7

Norris 0 of last 7

Who aside from Mitch posted that Norris sucked?

How has he clearly got stamina? Has he made it out of the 6th inning in the last year?

Until he can go out and consistently give you 6+ innings, my position doesn't change.

Obviously he needs to go deeper in games but I'd think everyone is encouraged by how he's pitched lately. Run support is irrelevant unless someone is citing w-l but I'd think most of us are knowledgeable enough to not do that.

All things considering, we need to know what he can do. He should be on a short lease though, however Ausmus is still the manager.

Boyd had a rough start last week, but Zimmerman has had a rough 3 months. I don't feel great about either of them today, but Boyd played a much larger role in getting us here than Zimmerman so I would've rewarded that. I'd much rather they just get Zimmerman working on getting right for next season.

Either way Brad better have the shortest hook ever today. Too important of an inning to let a guy try to work through an early inning.

Hopefully that was enough negativity of Zimmerman that he will now pitch 7 innings of 1 run ball to make me eat shit!!

There you go adjusting your metrics again. All season you're complaining about Norris not getting "quality starts" and now that he's had 4 in his last 7 starts you suddenly move your base line to completing 7 innings?

I mentioned wins purely to point out that Norris ALWAYS gives us a chance to win. The guy just doesn't give up more than 3 runs.

I think Zimmerman gives us the best chance to win. We don't have other good options so that's fine. I think we should pitch Zimmerman 3-4 innings and maybe go with farmer after that. I don't see Zimmerman giving us 7 good innings even under the best circumstances. Let hitters see him once or maybe twice and quit while you're ahead. We have jv tomorrow so I expect him to go deep.

I just made that posts to get people's cards on the table in case Zimmerman gives up 3 in the first and then everyone second guesses ausmus ayong farmer or Boyd would be the better choice with the benefit of hindsight

All season? Talk about hyperbole.

The point has always been about economy of pitches and endurance. Yes, 4 out of last 7 GS he has a QS. Does that sample size justify anything? Probably not. But you make it seem like it does. And just FYI....3 of those QS were against the MLB's two worst teams. Coincidence maybe, but I am not discounting it.

That's a fair point, giving up 1-2 runs over 5.1 keeps you in the game. That's what we get from Norris typically

Those hits he'll be passing a lot of guys over the next 2-3 years..
