He never won an MVP, but would have in 1962 had his season not ended with a broken collarbone. He had 29 HR and 90+ RBI after 100 games with a OPS+ over .900

RIP Mr Tiger. The first person I thought of was Ron and how this breaks the heart of all Tigers fans. My earliest baseball memories are of Al Kaline. Sad day in the saddest time of my lifetime. My heart goes out to all of you

I remember watching reruns of the way they did the home run derby. They'd talk to the players between rounds. Always had the best vs the best. Fun to watch.

That show only ran for 1 season in 1960 as the host, Mark Scott, died of a heart attack at age 45, 11 days after the last derby was filmed.

Hadn't realized. I remember watching a bunch of those but didn't know they were all from 1960.

I watched them all too when I was younger when ESPN re-aired them in the late 1980s. Was really interesting to see the future hall of famers from that era.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Detroit sports legend, Al Kaline. It is always devastating to lose someone who means so much to the city. Rest easy, Mr. Tiger.

Breaks my heart that one of my fav players of all time AL KALINE has passed . As a baseball lover I was lucky to get to know Al during my time in the Detroit area . # 6 was truly a HALL OF FAMER on/off the field . Loved by all & to me no doubt Tigers GOAT/ RIP #6

Susan Slusser.
Al Kaline was an absolute treasure. The kindest man, a true Hall of Famer in every sense of the word. Baseball will miss him always. I feel so lucky to have known him even just a little.

Bob Seger.
Devastated to hear Al Kaline has passed away. I was lucky enough to meet Al a few times. He was a genuine hero of mine. I told him he & Willie Mays were my 2 favorite players of all time & he sent me a photo of him & Willie which I treasure! He was a great man & he wore it well!

Saddened to hear the passing of “Mr. Tiger” Al Kaline. He was one the classiest men I’ve ever met. Always willing to share his baseball knowledge. Prayers for Al’s family & Tigers the only organization he ever knew. Baseball lost a great one today! RiP

Very sad to learn of Al Kaline’s passing. An exceedingly kind man who was my dad’s favorite player when he lived in Windsor and went to school at U of Detroit. My Dad said today that Kaline was to Tiger fans what Mickey Mantle was to Yankee fans. RIP.

RIP Al Kaline. This is a BIG loss. All class. Don Zimmer used to order his young outfielders to watch Al Kaline warm up before a game and take mental notes.

Ryan Field.
He was my Dad’s childhood hero and growing up, I could never hear enough stories about Al Kaline.
The best part? When I finally got to know him years later, the stories couldn’t even begin to do him justice.
On behalf of baseball fans everywhere, thank you Mr. Tiger.

Ron Fournier.
One of the greatest things about being raised in #Detroit in the 1960s and 70s was the pleasure of watching this man swing a bat and throw darts from the right-field corner. He never refused an autographed and always thanked the cops.
“Statistics never captured how special Kaline was. Like the Yankees’ Joe DiMaggio and the Cardinals’ Stan Musial, he embodied the beauty of the game and became a living monument of how gracefully it could be played.”
Farewell, Mr. Kaline.

Jim Brandstatter.
I am devastated to learn of the passing of Al Kaline. I’m a life long Tiger fan, he was the greatest Tiger of them all. As a child, as a teen as a co-worker, he was a model for me. Class-Humility- Integrity-Kindness. I got to know him, and I am better for that. RIP #6-the best!

For 12 years, Gramp & Al Kaline faced off for the #Yankees & #Tigers, & for 5 decades after that, they caught up in Cooperstown & #springtraining each year. Of course, Gramp called Al "Alvin" instead of "Albert," & no doubt that's how he greeted his old pal today. RIP, Mr. Tiger.

"I am glad it's all over." That is what Al Kaline said after he signed his first big league contract in 1953. He said exactly the same thing 22 seasons later after his final game in the major leagues. Kaline passed away today at the age of 85 and he will be missed by many.

Mr. Tiger, the embodiment of grace under pressure, gentleman courtliness and elegance in every way, has passed. Long live Al Kaline in our hearts. For six decades, he represented the #Tigers, city of Detroit & state of Michigan with class. Rest peacefully. We miss you already.

Tony Paul.
Al Kaline didn't enjoy signing autographs -- not because he didn't like fans, but because he was shy, and didn't do well in larger crowds. He preferred close encounters. Once, he met my uncle (then a Milwaukee alderman) and aunt at Old County Stadium, and invited them to dinner.

Steven Project.
It is with a heavy heart that my boyhood idol Al Kaline has passed away. I wore #6... played right field (learned to spin and twirl in the RF corner ). So sad. Salute from The Sports Project.

For the final game at Tiger Stadium the players all wore numbers of former Tigers greats. Karim Garcia, wearing Al Kaline's #6 homered in the 6th inning. In the 8th, Robert Fick, wearing Al's rookie year #25, hit a HR on the roof. Al was so excited, he was amazing. #RIPMrTiger

Al Kaline was Mr. Tiger in a sports world where no one stays around long enough to earn a Mr. title of any sort. Kaline earned his with distinction. A man of dignity, a Detroit icon.

Joe Posnanski.
Al Kaline was such a nice man, and I cherish every moment I spent through the years listening to him tell stories. RIP.

We've lost Mr. Tiger, Al Kaline, who seemed as if he was Detroit's eternal sports presence. Last saw him a month ago at spring training. He clearly was weakening, which was not comprehensible.

Matt Shepard.
how great was Al Kaline? 1 of 6 OF to ever win 10 GG; played in at least 100 games 19 straight seasons; 18x all-star. Brooks Robinson once said of Kaline, "there have been some great defensive players, but the fella who could do everything was Al Kaline."

When the #Nats were in Detroit this summer, Al Kaline heard my dad was a huge fan of his and came over to our booth to meet my dad. That’s what kind of a person he was. A prince of a man and when it’s all said and done that matters more than anything you do on the field. RIP Al.

RIP to Al Kaline, one of the most underrated players in MLB history. He’s just one of five players ever to amass 300 home runs and 3,000 hits while playing for just one team during a career. The others are Musial, Ripken, Brett, and Yaz.

One of my favorite things about my many spring training trips to Lakeland was walking into that clubhouse and seeing Al Kaline - in full uniform.
I tried never to miss a chance to talk to Al. So kind. So welcoming. So smart. So observant. So interested in everything. RIP, Al.

A very sad day for everyone in the #Tigers organization with the passing of Al Kaline. Al's last visit to UPMC Park was in 2012 when he was helping a young Nick Castellanos learn how to the play the outfield. Here he is pregame with Denny McLain. #MrTiger

My Al Kaline story isn’t a touching yarn about meeting him & talking baseball. It’s me being an idiot. At Tiger Stadium after a game. Fireworks night, headed to the ladies room before the show. Al Kaline walking toward me alone.
I didn’t want to annoy/bother him, so I let him pass without saying anything. REGRETS.

Paul Bennett.
I got his autograph when I was 12...he was standing by the dugout talking to someone..my Dad and I were halfway up the reserve section behind the Tiger dugout...I went down to the rail and lo and behold he signed my program. if there's a stain on this post it's my tears...

Jeanna Trotman.
Al Kaline was one of my first interviews when I was an intern at wxyzdetroit.
I remember being so intimidated because of all I’ve heard about him from my parents & grandparents. However, all my nerves disappeared right when we started talking because he was so warm & kind.

Dan Leach.
Had the true honor of sitting down with the legend Al Kaline a couple years ago for a Q&A at Comerica Park. He was always super kind to me & I was able to bring my dad to meet him, my fathers sporting hero, who he had never had the chance to meet before. Was such a special day.

Dan D'Addona.
Today's #dailyjersey is Mr. Tiger Al Kaline. He could do it all and did it with quiet dignity.

Edward L. Smith.
To the generation before mine, it's fair to say that the symbolic personifications of the Detroit #Tigers and #RedWings was Al Kaline and Gordie Howe. They were the conscience of those organizations. And now they're both gone. RIP Mr. Tiger.

FieldDiamond.
I got Al's autograph at a Wings game at The Olympia in the early 60's. He and Gordie were best of friends. The passing parade has claimed one of the best. #MrTiger

Matt Nokes.
Al Kaline was an amazing man and he always had a kind word for me. When I first came up to the big leagues with the Tigers he always had a kind and gentle encouraging word to say. Al often did the "Color" [TV] and would give me insights after games on the exact pitch locations...

I learned something. Probably forgetting knowing me. I just don’t remember him wearing # 25 for his rookie season. Amazing how on Tiger stadiums last day how Karim Garcia hit a homer in the 6th inning wearing #6 and Robert Fick’s grand slam was done wearing # 25. Just amazing. I am still not right after hearing this yesterday. I mean I have been to Kaline’s baseball reference page a Gazillion times and always thought he only wore #6 lol.

Thanks Ron for all the notes !

Al Kaline's memory is very much alive in my heart.

After reading every post in this thread .. including reading every single one of the many kind quotes from a wide variety of other folks .. not a doubt in my mind that every single one of all those kinds words would be just as deservedly true today even if Mr Tiger had not passed away.

Tiger legend Ernie Harwell passed away in 2010 and now Mr Tiger Al Kaline passes away us in 2020. They just do not make them like those two anymore.

Whenever Tiger baseball resumes .. very likely they will wear a patch on their uniforms with the #6 on it.

Of Kaline's legendary consistency, Bunning, who died at 85 in 2017, said, "(you) never knew he was there until he dove into the seats and caught a home run and came out, then all of a sudden, ?gee what a great player,' but that's the way he was every day."

For those that have MLB network the 1968 WS game 6 Celebrating the life of Al Kaline is playing right now Kaline to 3rd on a hit by Cash 4-0. There a DRIVE Jim Northrup makes 8-0 I miss Harry's calls. Kaline's 2nd hit of the inning makes it 10-0. Cash 2nd base hit in a inning tied him with 14 other players, with 2 hits in a inning/ We all know who number 14 was.Tigers scored 10 runs that inning making it 10-0. Dick M, Mickey S, And Al Kaline became the 4th, 5th and 6th players to score two runs in the same inning that inning.
Kaline 3rd hit is gone 2nd homer, 11 hits now, in the series. Just a Beatles song just another day. Going to right going glove Kaline brings it in at the foul line robing Maxville for the 3rd out. Kaline with another putout that makes 6 putouts by a right fielder, that be one out; one more he ties it. And Maxville flies out to record tie holder right fielder Al Kaline, for another 3rd out with runners on 3rd and 2nd. Leads off the inning batting .440 gets hBP on 1st. now on base 6 of his last 7 at bats. Kurt now doing the PBP, man I miss him too. Kaline with another 3rd out flyout.
So now after 8 1/2 tigers are 13-0 for those that want to know the score. Bobo Newsome in 1940 was the last Tiger to pitch a shut out in a WS, as Denny loses his with two outs in the 9th. 13-1 was the finale. I was 13 when they tied the series 3 all. For the Tigers history was waiting for them the next day.

MLB is showing the 7th game now.
