Bad day for AA

Giving up and resorting to mud slinging/name calling already? Like I said a million times before - you are one pathetic loser.

Yeah! Dropping minority rates! Woo!

Namecalling might not be the pinnacle of logical debate, but sometimes, it just looks like the shoe fits. ...and by that, of course I mean that it's BS to pretend that this is about democracy when the population is evenly split on the issue, and evenly split represents an historic low in support for AA.

It is in fact, ALL about democracy. If either of you read the article, you would know that the case was not about AA itself but rather a proposal that was voted on and passed, DEMOCRATICALLY by 58% of the voters in Michigan and it was upheld by the Supreme Court in a 6-2 vote. Thus it was a good day for democracy, no so much for AA. If the Court shot it down, it would be a bad day for democracy and a good day for AA. If you think that makes someone a racist, well let's just say I hope you don't sell shoes for a living...

I too am against affirmative action, but I agree in that it isn't necessarily a "good day for democracy" given the split in views as Gulo showed.

Well...there is the potential that it's not about democracy or race, and your post really stems from an aversion to Ann Arbor. Either way, I don't believe someone would create this post out of enthusiasm for democracy.

My position on AA has been well established in prior threads. The idea that belief in equal rights for all, special rights for none makes someone racist is ridiculous. It's a cop out and it's barely worth dignifying with a response - but thus far it seems to be the best the other side can come up with.

Spartynash - read the article. 58% of Michigan voters passed the proposal democratically. Perhaps, based on the graphic posted by Gulo, a national vote would have yielded a different result and perhaps not. But for the state of Michigan, a clear majority voted against AA for university admissions. It doesn't get any more democratic than that.

And for the record, one of my sisters lives in AA - I visit it regularly and it's a lovely town.

AA was just a poor solution (more like band-aid) to a larger problem.

The focus should be on improving education in low-income areas so that the decision between two applicants is purely about scores/ability and not about race.

Bingo. It's not a good thing out of context. It's inherently unfair. However, bias can be show to be incorporated into so many other facets of life, it's one place we can push in the other direction until we figure out how to deal with the actual problems. To date, we haven't. The end-goal should be the end of AA, but not until we fix other inequalities.

If you believe that, it only shows that you're not listening.

If you think that quote was about AA, it only shows you're not paying attention. That statement was not about AA, it was clearly about the idea that anyone opposed to AA is racist - and yes, I firmly believe that's a cop out and barely worthy of a response.

That's the claim I'm talking about (the phrase you dropped when you repeated your statement). If you haven't heard any argument better than "anyone opposed to AA is racist" then you are not listening.

Yeah... but good luck with that. the racists will concede that point as long as they get AA struck down. then when it comes to fixing the inequality in educational spending & social spending between white and black areas, you'll see their true colors: "Sorry, there's no money extra money for education. WHOA... raise my tax dollars and spend on "those people???" You want to bus them WHERE???"

and of course, these debates always get clouded by all the hyperbole from the blowhards & bigots on the Right as far as who benefits, how, how it's determined, etc. and didn't we figure it came down to like a few dozen applicants or a hundred applicants at each University that might be affected? A drop in the bucket relative to the pool. And these were marginal applicants to begin with. Yet from talking to idiots like spartanwack, you'd think Michigan's incoming class was 90% black.

appropos of a State of Michigan/Affirmative Action thread, that Jennifer Gratz cow is back in the news. She has apparently succeeded in making a career out of opposing affirmative action. good for her. glad she never got into Michigan.

Man, it was awful! 12% of the population was getting 6.4% of the spots in the class! They took uuuurrr degreez!!

Glad it's down to 4.6%. Makes me want to post threads celebrating democracy! I know government is a continuous thing and courts make rulings all the time, but this one was about democracy.

Okay your application to the liberal-socialist posters club has been approved.

Sergeant-at-arms Thumb will present you with your ceremonial copy of The Communist Manifesto, t-shirt with a pic of Che Guevara wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt on it, and black beret.
