The Hot Stove season is starting to get, well, hotter??.. The San Diego Padres just traded for Blake Snell and Yu Darvish.

And the Tigers just signed?. Jose Urena and Dustin Garneau.

Are you surprised? Disappointed? Resigned?

And are you pointing your finger at Al Avila?

Maybe that finger ? the index one, of course ? should be pointing elsewhere.

To ownership.

As GM, sometimes it is just as important to determine which players will not be part of your long term success. Knowing your current 40-man roster, please share the 1 Tiger who sits at the top of your list of players who doesn?t move the needle going forward.

As GM you have a specific need and must acquire an impact player(s) via trade this year. It will cost you one of your top 5 prospects who all happen to be ranked in Baseball America?s Top 100.
They are Spencer Torkelson (ranked #5), Tarik Skubal (#20), Casey Mize (#28), Matt Manning (#30) and Riley Greene (#31).
It is a difficult decision, but you should have in mind the kind of player you would need to acquire. What would be your need or reason for trading one of your top prospects? Share if you like in your comments.

Please participate in the survey. You have a hard choice to make because you must choose 1 player to trade. No easy way out.

Which top prospect would you trade for an impact player in 2021?

What a tough time to be a Tiger fan.

It?s Year 6 or 7 of a rebuild, depending on your math. We are a week away from closing down January with 20 Thoughts. But I would like to scratch an itch that has been driving me a little crazy.
It?s the state of the rebuild. Assuming it has started.
Is there anything we can hang our hat on for the upcoming season?
The answer is yes. And for our sanity, it would be therapeutic to discuss it.

It?s time to revisit the last week of baseball from Monday through Sunday. What stood out for our two bloggers? What do we need to keep our eyes on going forward?

Four observations apiece and just 2 sentences to identify each of them. As always, answers aren?t shared ahead of time so let?s see how similar ? or how different ? Kurt and Holly are in their responses.

There?s been a rumor out there about A. J. Hinch ever since he was hired.
A rumor about his contract.

And, of course, the 2 major local papers never reported it.

But other national writers have.

First of all, there are lots of rumors out there. Some true, some not. And for me, the condition of reporting it must rely upon at least 2 highly-reputable sports journalists putting it in print.

Let?s just say that I had a lot of digging to do.

But now I can write about it.

First of all, Hinch has a 3-year contract with the team. (The organization refused to reveal that information.) It?s still unknown if there is an option year which gives the team the power to retain him.

But it also appears that A. J. is only the third manager in history to have an opt-out clause in his contract. Joe Maddon was the first, followed by Terry Francona, 10 and 6 years ago respectively.

And what does that clause say?

That Hinch can opt out of his contract if ?expectations are not met.?

For all of the Al Avila hate here, I found this interesting. I was looking at the offensive offensive stats for the season and sorted by OPS. The top 4 are all guys that Al added as free agents.
