DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

Offense continues to go down all across the board in MLB, hitting historic levels not seen since the mid-1960?s.

There are 2 major contributing factors ? launch angles and the shift.

Players are now being taught to use launch angle techniques in order to lift the ball and hit home runs more easily. They are no longer being coached to make as much contact as possible. But while launch angles create more home runs ? and as studies show ? are tied to more wins ? they also significantly increase striking out.

Rod Carew, one of the game?s best hitters, has made eradicating the launch angle his primary mission. He believes it has ruined the game, creating an all-or-nothing approach to scoring. He says that teaching launch angles is not a one-size-fits-all and ignores each hitter?s talents and strengths. He says that hitters are not focusing on what they do best and that the purpose of the game should be getting on base.

Defensively, the shift also accounts for a downturn in offense by moving players well beyond their traditional defensive positions to cover areas where batters are most likely to hit balls. Theo Epstein joined the Commissioner?s Office to specifically address how to overcome this strategy in an attempt to return the game to producing more action and scoring.

Starting next year, the rules surrounding the shift will be modified. Teams will no longer will be allowed to have more than two infielders on one side of second base. This would also mean that if the 3Ber and SS are to the left of 2B, then the 2Ber must remain on the right side of 2B.

If you could eliminate just one of these strategies, which one would it be?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

this might be the dumbest poll ever created by TT because one is a hypothetical and one can be changed. Just change the one that can be changed.

The MLBPA has announced that the player representatives voted unanimously against the new pitch clock and shift rules.

Major League Baseball's competition committee has voted to implement a pitch clock and ban defensive shifts starting in 2023, sources tell ESPN.
It is official: 15-second clock with bases empty, 20 with runners on; and two fielders on each side of 2B bag, both feet on the dirt.

Since it appears that 3 rules changes that have been adopted in the minors are coming to MLB in 2023 (as first reported by Ken Rosenthal), here is a look at what the data in the minors has shown this year with those rules changes.

Starting next year, MLB will be implementing several rule changes in an effort to put more excitement into the game. Analytics has slowed down the game and put fewer balls into play. These rules are supposed to temper the changes created by analytics.

The rule changes include:

A PITCH CLOCK that will help speed up the pace of games.

LARGER BASES that will help avoid collisions and encourage more base stealing.

MODIFYING THE SHIFT to help promote more balls in play and action on the bases.

How happy are you that MLB will implement these changes starting next year?
(Btw, tomorrow we will be asking which one of these you like the best so save those comments for then.)

How happy are you about MLB's changes to the game?

1. Love it.

2. Feelin' so-so.

3. Dislike changes to the sport.

Starting with the 2023 season, MLB will be implementing 3 major changes to the game. A committee, including Theo Epstein, spent several years studying how to make the game faster-paced and more exciting for fans. All of the following changes were implemented in the minor leagues to determine their success rate and positive impact.

The 3 changes we?ll see are:

A PITCH CLOCK that will help speed up the pace of games.

LARGER BASES that will help avoid collisions and encourage more base stealing attempts.

MODIFYING THE SHIFT to help promote more hits and action on the bases.

Which one do you believe will make the biggest and most positive impact on the game?

For the 2023 season, MLB will be instituting 3 new rule changes.
They are:

PITCH TIMER ? 15, 20 and 30 seconds between batters and pitchers in order to speed up pace of play. Trial runs also show that the rule increases stolen bases.

DEFENSIVE SHIFT LIMITS ? A minimum of 4 players on the infield that will help increase batting averages on balls in play.

BIGGER BASES ? A move from a 15? base to one that is 18?. A safety issue but a change that will also increase stolen base attempts.

For the complete details of each new change, you can check them out here:

With a new balanced schedule in 2023, there will be a change in games played:

52 games vs divisional opponents (down from 76).

64 games vs non-divisional opponents (down from 66).

46 games vs inter-league opponents (up from 20).

I don't see any problem with expansion. Not sure I would like moving a bunch of teams to different leagues though.

I guess it really doesn't matter too much since they play interleague games anyway.

yeah Tom, this is what I meant with manfred fucking it up, expansion is okay, but changing up the leagues like that nah.
It will also bring more teams to the playoffs and continue down the more teams in the playoffs money road.
