Detroit heads to Fenway for the first of a 3 game series on this upcoming 10 game road trip. They’ll face their second consecutive “bottom feeder.” Boston has lost 8 straight games and is now in last place in the AL. They are 22-23 at home and the Tigers are 22-21 on the road. The Tigers have lost 7 of their last 10 games and are 10.5 games back of the 1st place Royals and 4 games back of the Twins for the last wild card spot.
The Tigers and Red Sox are the 2 worst pitching staffs in the AL and this 3 game series shouldn’t disappoint. All 3 games feature starters with 4.60 era’s or worse.
Verlander continues to say he’s close, and he just needs to slow down from the stretch, and he just needs to avoid that one bad inning, etc. but the fact is he has only looked really good in 1 of his 6 starts this year. After pitching great against the Twins JV gave up 7 runs to the O’s. It seems to be all or nothing with JV. In his 6 starts he’s given up 2, 6, 2, 7, 1 and 7 runs. His era sits at 8.27 in his 3 July starts. The Tigers have lost all 6 of his starts.
Porcello gets to face his former team for the first time since being traded to Boston. Porcello has been equally as bad for Boston posting a career high 5.79 era but he’s been a little better at home this season. He is 4-4 with a 4.70 era in 8 Fenway starts. He’s pitched better in his last 2 starts combining to go 11 innings while giving up 4 runs. He is 1-8 with a 7.80 era in his last 10 starts and has the worst era in the AL among qualifying pitchers.
The Tigers are hitting .353 (12 for 34) with 3 doubles and 2 triples against Porcello. Kinsler is 6 for 10, Rajai is 3 for 7 and Krauss is 2 for 6. Cespedes and VMart are each 0 for 3.
The Red Sox are hitting .222 (24 for 108) with 6 doubles and 5 home runs against JV. Ortiz is 10 for 27 with 4 doubles and 2 homers, DeAza is 7 for 31 with 2 homers, Napoli is 4 for 18 with a homer and Pedroia is 1 for 18 against JV.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening.
