Tigers vs Guardians Game 162 October 1 2023

FINAL GRADES.
Totally Tigers

As we continue our year in review, let?s now grade each individual player from this year?s roster.

But in order to do so, we need to identify the grading parameters first.

Tiger fans now have to understand that this team has evolved into a modern one. We need to say goodbye to the old standards we saw for decades ? guys who could mash but couldn?t run or field. We now need to look at the complete player and how many tools he brings to the game.

Which also means that we need to look at stats as they are viewed today. No longer is batting average on its own an accurate indicator. The slash line is.

It is an indicator of a hitter?s entire offensive skill level ? the ability to hit, the ability to hit for power and the ability to consistently get on base. And the relationship between all 3 (or 4) stats also tells us how elite of a hitter he is or whether his strength lies in 1-2 areas.

And a player?s defensive runs saved (DRS) has to be incorporated into his analysis. He can create runs for the team ? but he can also give away runs with his fielding. Some of the best hitters on this team like Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson are defensively weak and they give up lots of runs to their opponents.

For a pitcher, the win-loss record is no longer considered to be an accurate measure of his skill. Especially for this team that rarely supported their hurlers by their inability to give them the runs they needed to win.

What we really want to look at is the ERA and especially the WHIP (walks+hits per inning pitched) which shows how many runners a pitcher puts on base. It is the true measure of his effectiveness.

And finally, it?s not fair to judge players who didn?t have a lot of playing time. There are a number of them you won?t see here for that reason.

Injuries are taken into account and the final assessment of each player also includes how they compare to their teammates, not to the rest of MLB.

So here are the final grades of qualified Tigers for the 2023 season. Players are listed alphabetically.....

pretty good article.

I can't understand how Rogers is below Vierling. Rogers has a better defensive rating at a more important position and a higher OPS & more than double the HR in 30 fewer ABs. Putting Cabrera above Baddoo is also wrong. Baddoo had a higher OPS and had a positive DRS. Baddoo was also better than McKinstry.

Baddoo had the same OPS+ as Miggy. But regardless where they rank you're splitting hairs here. Offensively Baddoo is not good. Miggy's gone, and Baddoo should be too.

I was just using her own parameters which included defense. Baddoo's DRS ranked tied for 3rd best on the team at +2

That's not fair when you know one is a DH. Use Baddoo as a late defensive replacement then but he def. should not be a starter next season. You're trying to compare 2 bad players.. Runs created a game, 4.1 Baddoo, 3.8 Miggy - 4.4 Vierling, 4.6 Ibanez. Lippy 5.1, Meadows 5.2 just to put into perspective.

Baddoo blows.

right. Cabrera is so bad at defense that he couldn't even be used. That is the definition of a defensive liability.

Why are you stuck on this? You're trying to justify Baddoo because Miggy sucked? Basically similar on offense and one was 41 years old after years of bad legs. What's Baddoo's excuse? It's over Miggy's gone - quit your fucking complaining.

I pointed out 5 players. Vierling, Rogers, Baddoo, Cabrera, & McKinstry. You are the one that decided to only comment on Cabrera. Maybe it's you?

holy crap...one guy had a 29...21 better than the Tiger's best and 26 better than the Tigers 2nd best.

The Tigers are still really bad defensively

Zach McKinstry is a Gold Glove award nominee.
The veteran utilityman didn?t do much at the plate after a hot start, but he continued to excel anywhere AJ Hinch played him defensively.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

So far, we?ve addressed the Detroit Tigers? yearly performance as a whole and then graded each member of the roster.

Now, it?s time to evaluate the manager and coaches. They work as a team so it?s impossible to simply evaluate A. J. Hinch. We have to look at the entire group.

For the first time in history, the Tigers have modernized their coaching staff. While certain coaching categories have multiple members, each one brings their own focus and specialty to their work.

Joining Hinch are:
George Lombard ? bench coach who also in charge of base running, positioning, relays and signs. He also coaches in the outfield.
Keith Beauregard, Michael Bdar, James Rowson ? hitting coaches.
Chris Fetter, Robin Lund, Juan Nieves ? pitching coaches incl. kinesiology.
Alfredo Amazago ? first base coach.
Gary Jones ? third base coach.
Tim Federowicz ? catching coach.
Six of these coaches are new this year. In addition, the Tigers hired 2 new training/conditioning and performance coaches. And 2 new athletic trainers.

Overall, the team improved their performance over last year, winning 12 more games and losing 12 less. They went from finishing 4th to 2nd in the AL Central. It was the best win-loss result since 2016.

In 2022, they had no winning months. This year, 2 of them. But in both years, they started each season very slowly.

The 2023 season saw an improvement in every offensive category except for strikeouts. The team slash line was also improved and they halved their negative run differential. However, they still sit near the bottom.

The players hit 55 more HRs, 100 more RBIs and doubled their stolen bases.

In past years, the Tigers have ranked #29 or #30 in offensive stats. They have moved up but remain in the lower third of MLB.

Their defense has also improved. They now have 5 position players who are defensively strong and saved the team runs.

Pitching has also gotten stronger with the team moving from the lower third to the middle.

The Tigers have a pitcher who is in the discussion for Rookie of the Year as well as a Gold Glove finalist.

But in the end, the team again finished under .500. Another year with more losses than wins.

Given that this was the first year under new PoBO Scott Harris, combined with the priority of undoing the damage created by former GM, Al Avila, what is realistic to expect regarding how fast this team turns things around?

Were you expecting lesser results? Something similar to this year?s final standings? Or were you pleasantly surprised by what happened?

Do you see this team being stuck or are you currently seeing progression of the young players and the formation of the core of this team?
How would you grade those in charge ? A. J. Hinch and his coaching staff?

How would you grade A. J. Hinch and his coaching staff?

1. High marks

2. Decent marks.

3. Mixed reviews.

4. Disappointing marks.
