"Al Kaline was an icon, not only to the Tigers organization, but to all of baseball. Kaline meant a great deal to me, coming up through the Tigers organization. I was smart enough to watch and learn from the way he carried himself, both off the field, and on it. May 4 in Tigers and mlb history:

1869: The Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first all-professional baseball team, start their first regular season with a 45 - 9 victory over the Great Westerns of Cincinnati.

1871: A National Association contest between the Cleveland Forest Citys and Fort Wayne Kekiongas is officially the first Major League game ever played. Fort Wayne is the winner, 2 - 0, behind a four-hit shutout by pitcher Bobby Mathews. Al Pratt is the losing pitcher. Cleveland's catcher, Deacon White, is 3 for 4, including the first hit (a double) and also is the first to hit into a double play. Bill Lennon becomes the first catcher to throw a runner out trying to steal second base. In the 127 games during the 1871 season, there are a total of four shutouts.

1902: George Mullin, a 5 time 20 game winning excellent Tigers pitcher, makes his big league debut.

1910: Not wanting to offend either club, U.S. President William Howard Taft attends two games in one day. After watching part of a game between the hometown St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds at Robison Field, he travels cross-town to watch the remainder of the game between the St. Louis Browns and Cleveland Naps at Sportsman's Park.

1919: For the first time, Sunday baseball can be played legally in New York, following the passage of the "Sunday Baseball Law", signed by Governor Al Smith on April 19th. 35,000 fans crowd the Polo Grounds to watch the Giants lose to the Phillies, 3 - 1, while at Ebbets Field, the Robins draw 25,000 spectators to their game. Future New York City Mayor and die-hard Giants fan Jimmy Walker is the prime mover behind the law.

1922: Hall of Fame Tigers outfielder Harry Heilmann smacks his only career walk-off homer. It?s a doozy, too. With the Tigers trailing the Browns 5-3 and two on, he hits a three-run shot off Elam Vangilder.

1928: Ty Cobb becomes the second member of the 700-double club, joining Tris Speaker. All these years later only two have joined them; Stan Musial and Pete Rose.

1943: National League President Ford C. Frick demonstrates that the revised balata ball is livelier than the previous year's ball by bouncing it on a carpet in his office. The major leagues have turned to the balata ball because of wartime restrictions on the supplies used to make standard baseballs.

1951: Dick Kryhoski goes 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and a stolen base. Tigers score 5 runs in the 6th and 3 in the 7th to beat the Red Sox 8-4.

1961: Tigers 6 - Senators 0. Don Mossi pitches a 2-hit complete game. Norm Cash finishes 2-for-3, Jake Wood, Al Kaline, & Steve Boros with 2 hits each. Tigers are 12-5, Tied for AL lead.

Mays' blast against Claude Osteen, which puts him fourth on the all-time list, helps the Giants beat the Dodgers, 6 - 1.

1975: Bob Watson of the Houston Astros races around the bases on Milt May's home run and crosses the plate at Candlestick Park in time to score the one millionth run in major league history, seconds ahead of Dave Concepci?n of the Cincinnati Reds, playing in a different game in another city, to earn the distinction.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Over the winter, the Tigers moved Colt Keith from his 2B position to 1B. They had signed Gleyber Torres to play 2B and expected Spencer Torkelson to continue his offensive and defensive struggles.
But Torkelson won his job back by becoming 1 of the team’s best hitters and also improving his fielding skills to become a plus defender.
Keith did a short stint at 2B when Torres became injured and made a number of questionable plays.
He is currently serving mostly as the DH and occasionally at 1B when Torkelson needs a day off. But he is not playing full time.
Keith was moved from 3B because of a shoulder injury. His only positional options are 1B and 2B.
He is struggling this year and has one of the team’s lowest offensive numbers. He is also a negative defender.
But the season is only a month old and things can change. Last year, he also struggled in April before doing better in May.
The Tigers signed Keith to a 6-year contract with an additional 3 years of team options. They wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t see significant potential. He is making just under $4 mill this season.

But what is the best way for Keith to find success?
Is it to keep him as DH and occasionally play 1B and 2B? To see MLB-level pitching? To hope that last year’s pattern returns?
Or is it better for the Tigers to send him down to Toledo so he can clear his mind and focus on improving with much less pressure? To be able to play every day. In Detroit, he wouldn’t be playing daily.
What would you do?

Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

What should the Tigers do about Colt Keith?

1. Keep him in Detroit.

2. Send him down to Toledo.

1904: At Huntington Avenue Grounds, Cy Young of the Boston Americans hurls the second of his three no-hitters, a 3 - 0 perfect game against the Philadelphia Athletics and Rube Waddell. Young will eventually complete 24 straight hitless innings, still the record, and 45 shutout innings in a row, a record until broken by Jack Coombs' 53 scoreless frames in 1910.

1906: Recovering from a case of diphtheria contracted before the season, Christy Mathewson makes his first appearance of the year for the New York Giants. He pitches seven solid innings against the Boston Beaneaters, allowing seven hits before being relieved by Joe McGinnity, who allows three runs in the 9th inning to turn a 4 - 3 lead into a 6 - 4 defeat.

1922: Facing the Detroit Tigers, Bill Bayne of the St. Louis Browns pitches a no-hitter into the 9th inning. Detroit manager Ty Cobb then sends up five straight pinch hitters, the first of whom breaks up the no-hitter. One of the pinch hitters Cobb inserts is Bob "Fatty" Fothergill, who bats for him and strikes out, becoming the only man ever to pinch hit for Cobb. The Browns win.

1925: Detroit Tigers player/manager Ty Cobb hits three home runs, a double and two singles and 16 total bases, to lead his team to an 14 - 8 victory against the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park.

1925: Everett Scott of the New York Yankees is benched, ending his streak of 1,307 consecutive games played that started in 1918 while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Scott, who gives way to Pee Wee Wanninger at shortstop, has the longest playing streak to that point, but his record will be broken by Lou Gehrig.

1930: The Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns, 4 - 3, in 12 innings and score all their runs on solo home runs. Al Simmons' lead-off home run in the bottom of the 12th makes Lefty Grove a winner over General Crowder, as both starters go all the way. Joe Boley, with two homers, and Mule Haas, with one, provide the other Athletics runs, a record to date in the American League. The New York Giants will score five runs on solo homers five weeks from now.

1935: At Braves Field, young pitcher Dizzy Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals faces the Boston Braves and 40-year-old veteran Babe Ruth. Dean walks Ruth in his first at-bat, then with two strikes on the Bambino, waves his outfielders back and throws a fastball down the middle that Ruth misses for a strikeout. Dean wins the game, 7 - 0, and in his first at bat, hits a home run over Ruth's head in left field. Dean will face Ruth again on May 19th, holding him hitless again, and winning that game as well.

1946 - Leon Day, pitching for the Newark Eagles, throws an Opening Day no-hitter against the Philadelphia Stars, winning, 2 - 0. It is the last 9-inning no-hitter in the Negro Leagues.

1948: The Detroit Tigers purchased Marlin Stuart from the St. Louis Browns.

1949: Charlie Gehringer, great second baseman of the Detroit Tigers between 1924 and 1942, is selected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America with 159 votes on 187 ballots. The Tigers great 2nd Baseman was a career .320 hitter with seven 200 hit seasons, scoring 1,775 runs and hitting 574 doubles, and the A.L. MVP in 1937.

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Today, it’s about quick hits – bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.
So let’s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week………..

Over the last week (dating back to April 28), the Tigers lead MLB with 20 home runs. That's the most we've hit over any seven-game stretch since September, 2004.

Some numbers for our 22-13 tigers:
8.1 WAR (OFF),
5.1 WAR (P)
13.2 TOTAL
Baez 1.5 WAR,
Scooby 1.5 OPS+ 153
Tork SLG .554
Carp OPS .899
team era 2.96

Trey Sweeney is the 4th player in Detroit Tigers history to drive in 6 runs as a shortstop:
Dick McAuliffe - 5/10/63
Chris Gomez - 5/17/94
Carlos Guillen - 8/21/2004
Trey Sweeney - 5/4/2025

This is the third time the Tigers have scored 11 runs at Anaheim in franchise history. Last time was back on September 15, 2023. The record is 12 back on August 22nd 1999. Dean Palmer went 3-for-5 so did Juan Encarnación who drove in 5.
