Michigan @ Minnesota

The team played hard I'll give them credit. They had chances to win, but ultimately too many weaknesses got exposed.

1) Lack of rebounding AGAIN, and giving up second chance points. Don't know the final numbers on that stat but it was a lot to a little I'm sure.

2) Lack of depth. Minnesota's bench outplayed ours badly. In fact the entire Gophers team played a very nice well balanced game. Lots of guys contributed for them. Not one bench guy contributed much for us.

3) Free Throws and the inability to draw them consistently. We can bitch about the refs, and yeah I didn't think they were great, but Minnesota made a much more concentrated effort to get to the line. 41 attempts to only 18 is unacceptable. That's not all on the refs, that's on philosophy and style of play.

Rutgers is a must win.

Box score

Minnesota 44 rebounds. 13 offense.
Michigan 31 rebounds. 3 offense.

JB is dumb in games like this when we need Moe on offense and he is in foul trouble. Protect him by playing a freaking 2/3 zone ..

Your not suppose to lose games when all 5 starters get in double figures.

Two things:

1) Beilein's philosophy on pulling players with 2,3 fouls is his undoing a lot of games. You have NO WAY OF KNOWING if he'll end up playing the entire game without fouling again. And even if he does foul out, at least you got the maximum amount of time out of him.

2) I don't complain about officials much. This was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in awhile.

Same with Izzo regarding the fouls. He'll play Matt freakin Van Dyk, all 6-5 of him, at center vs say risking Ward getting his third foul in the first half. It seems to be the way most coaches do it nowadays though. In the past it seemed coaches waited until they got that third in the first half. It's a risk for sure, but so is going deep into your bench with an inferior player to guard against what MIGHT happen.

As for the game, tough loss for Michigan. It had a definite tournament feel to it. Right now Michigan is playing like a tournament team, but definitely needs some of those winnable road W's that are left and the Purdue game.

*Shrugs*. Some crews call it tight like that. Not everybody is the same. You have to be able to adjust accordingly. Like I said Minnesota played much more of a "get to the rim" style of basketball, which tends to lead to more foul calls. They took only 13 three-pointers, and we took 26 because that's what we love to do for some reason. That's a big difference there.

Some of Michigan's fouls were just plain dumb too. Like giving the guy a 4-point play, and we fouled another guy attempting a three as well. I wasn't happy with the refs, but don't feel it is the reason we lost. We played hard, Minnesota was just a bit better in my opinion.

Except Duncan blocked the guy completely on the three from the corner.

Donnal's blocking call down the stretch was one of the worst I've seen in awhile. Walton got a knee to the nuts and the refs called him out of bounds.

It was a horribly officiated game. But in the same token, you have to make your free throws. Minnesota left the door WIDE open to steal this game and Michigan did everything to not.

Sounds like a very close game. I only caught parts of it and it looked to me like both teams were just about even. They went to OT, had a chance to win it, but couldn't pull it out. A couple plays here and there are the difference again.

I didn't really expect them to win this game and they didn't. Hard to be mad.

Aand if the technical foul wasn't called the we win by 1. The could on Robinson was bullshit as that was all ball. The foul on maar on the bad pass turnover cost 1 point and that was a flop. It was so one sided it was not even funny I'm going to go there are so many other calls..

You can't think that way. If the tech wasn't called, you can't guarantee they win by 1. Sports are not in a vacuum.

But your point is taken. There were some head-scratchers last night.

Bad calls happen every game. We just don't bother pointing them out when we win. Again maybe if we didn't shoot so many damn 3's maybe we'd get a few more calls throughout a game?

Minnesota shot 13 threes and we shot 26. That gives them 13 more possessions in which to not settle and potentially get a foul called by trying to get closer to the hoop.

The refs were bad yes, but they did not cost Michigan the game. Our style of play and our weaknesses were exposed. No depth, inferior rebounding, and inability to take advantage of the type of game that was being called. Irvin disappearing again did not help. Make another free throw here or there and we win the game in regulation also. Michigan has nobody to blame but themselves.

Yeah, I posted that up over in the mgoblog forum. People were getting on me about finding context. I said it doesn't matter what the context is, that quote in of itself is horrible and I never want to hear that from the head coach.

No kidding. Rebounding always being a problem has gotten really old.
