The Official MSU vs ][V][ichigan Game Thread

I know a guy who is older than me by a few years (I'm 33). Havent known him for too long, but he always beats his chest about his beloved Spartans. He even called the Harbaugh hiring "a desperate move." Anyway, I brought up Jeff Smoker and Drew Stanton. He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "Who?"

That's when I found out he used to be a Florida State fan before MSU's rise. Hell, he was even born and raised in the Detroit area.

These are the types of fans that piss me off. Bandwagon fans and people who claim the hometown/homestate teams AFTER they get good.

You should kick that guy right in his nuts.

I was this kind of fan, at least at first. Didn't really know anything until I got there and when I got there I loved everything I experienced, but you don't learn that much if all you do is go to games. Didn't really start learning about Michigan football history until senior year.

I totally get it, its just really annoying when someone says, "but, you didnt even go there." 99.5% of all Michigan fans "didnt even go there." Michigan's fanbase would be pretty small if we couldnt be fans cuz we never attended. Whats funny is 99.5% of MSU fans did go to school there. You'd have to, to be a fan of Sparty. Ha!!

The difference is that you aren't talking about fans who didn't attend the school as being lesser than you. No shame in having school pride. That's a good thing.

This

People do talk as if we are lesser. Not the guys here, but dorks in general.

I know some like that as well. It doesn't really bother me. Who am I to judge someone else's entertainment. I might give them shit, but whatever.

I didn't attend UM but I've been a fan for all but about 5 of the years I have lived. Been a fan since I could first think for myself. I don't think it lessens my fandom at all that I didn't attend the school. It is funny that I know about 10 sparty fans here in AZ and only one attended Msu. Strangely enough none of them have any issues with me being a UM fan including the one who attended msu. It's a stupid narrative "those people" push because Um has more fans nothing more nothing less. Call me a walverine all you want I'll be just fine.

All over the country there are generations of people who grew up rooting for a college team-generally it's a team of a school that's located close to where a person grew up.

A person might end up not going to that school, but if a person grew up rooting for the team that's likely to stick with them.

I don't know of any other situation where sports fans get crap from other fans for rooting for a team because they didn't necessarily go to that school.

It's an especially stupid argument considering that every taxpayer in the State of Michigan owns the school to some degree.

But I try to convince everyone they should be Michigan fans. Even out here where people aren't paying Michigan taxes. I guess I'd leave out d-bags. I don't want them to be fans.

I don't care if people root for Michigan or MSU and didn't attend the school, it's the douche the knocks the other school (generally towards MSU) for academic reasons or takes things too far in trash talking. Some loser I went to high school with posted on social media yesterday after the game "MSU is so classless. I literally wish I could burn down the campus." That's the ugly side of rivalries that I hate, it's sad seeing trash people ruin an exciting event. It's sports for crying out loud, get over yourselves.

That there is some crazy shit.

I mean I could understand a couch or two, but literally the whole campus?

Literally?

Just nuts.

You guys ever wish someone you knew wasnt a fn of the same team as yourself? There are a lot of people from Michigan out here in Wyoming. A guy I used to work with a couple months back was a Michigan fan. I worked with him a year and I was embarrassed everyday for other fans of my beloved Wolverines. He was "that guy" that constantly made mistakes and ****ed everything up. He would blame everyone else, even if the person wasnt working. He would actually forget who he worked with sometimes forgetting who had the day off. Dude was a ****ing tool and I would cringe when I came on shift to look at his computer screen decked out in Michigan Wolverine wallpaper. He ended up quitting because he couldnt understand why he was getting written up so much. We would talk football sometimes and I just couldnt get excited like I usually do with friends talking Michigan football. It sucked and I wished to god everyday he wasnt a fan. Ugh!!

To be fair I've never thought that about MSU, although I think Dantonio is a gigantic turd. However I've thought about burning a football stadium down every time I drive through Columbus.(figuratively) OSU'S only saving grace for me is their vet program which saved my dog.

Have I ever wished someone I knew wasn't a Michigan fan?

That would be a resounding YES.

Everytime I'm at a game and sit near one of those fans who just loves to bitch about the team/coaches, regardless of whether we're winning or losing... those people suck. How does that even make sense? If you're that unhappy with the program, don't pay attention to it. or go be a fan of another program. Just pick whoever is good that year and go cheer for them if winning is more important than loyalty.

I had a ton of unsolicited crap on my FB page last year after the muffed punt from Spartys who I had either gone to HS with or who were state fans, knowing I went to MICHIGAN and who decided to talk shit when that had never been the case before..

So yesterday I posted the video of Peppers return with a tag like, "Pride comes before the what again, Dantonio?? Can't go for 1 and try the onside, but go for two??"

And got a ton of replies all accusing me (and MICHIGAN) of being arrogant and writing off the State program because of one game ...so clueless. As if the record isn't what it has been now (7/9 wins or now 7/15 for State, so a losing record going back just 15 games) and that wasn't just an arrogant call by Mike.

Not to nitpick, by why in the hell did Ty Isaac only get 3 carries? He looked good on all 3. And IMO, Higdon should have been given most of Smith's 11 carries. Aside from the one brutal run, Smith couldn't do a thing.

Plus Isaac is a 1st down magnet. All the dude does is get 1st downs and he was never really used in the 2nd half. I undestand why Smith is used in certain situations and those are to break the other teams will. A back like Smith, after so many times making contact with, you just dont want to tackle him anymore because it starts becoming painful. Guys give up and its game over. The problem we have is that he takes a while to build up speed and the hole closes before he can blast through against some of these good defenses. He has no momentum to bang these guys and hurt them. I like the way Isaac follows his blocks and waits for them to set up. He's the patient one. Higdon and Evans are the ones who blast through that hole quickly and have the potential to take it the distance each time they have the ball. Id rather have those guys up 1st to wear the defense down and then run Deveon down their throats in the 4th to break them. Also, I may be alone in this, but Isaac has been our most consistent pass protector. Smith has had a bad year in pass pro.

I agree. I just don't understand why people are so high on Smith. I like the way he runs hard and love his passion, but he's an extremely limited athlete.

To me it looks like he's asked to do the grunt work most of the time. I think Harbaugh is using each back to the best of their ability, and Smith is the guy that you can throw "rock" with every time. More often than not he's going to gain solid yards, while occasionally running over the entire defense, and it helps set things up for his teammates. Personally I think he and Higdon are best suited for this role, and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more of a timeshare between the two of them.

I'm not sure why you keep questioning why people like him when it's right there in your post. That said, once it was clear that last year's bowl game wasn't an indication of how his 2016 season would go (which happened in week 1 or 2) I don't think anybody has been exceedingly high on him.

Smith just seems rather un-explosive. I know TV minimizes speed in general, but am I wrong?
