Dwight Howard

Yes, its hard to guarantee lottery picks but everyone knows the picks that the Magic look to be getting in any of the trade scenarios include playoff teams (with the possibility of Houston being borderline).

And yes Id give up all those picks and player for Howard on a 1 year deal because before any of these deals are made that team usually has a deal worked out long-term that the player has agreed to. It's already known that he wants to sign long-term with the Nets, so the Nets have no concern at all that Howard is in the last year of his deal. And like I just said teams know before hand if Howard will stay longer than that last year.

Who cares about RFA with Monroe. If he comes out in 2-3 years and demands a trade, guess what he is going to get traded because thats how it works.

Yep, the NBA sucks because of it.

It's not hard to guarantee a lottery pick, it's totally impossible.

So you'd give that up for Howard even if it's a 1 year deal, but as long as it's not a 1 year deal. Okey dokey.

Why would Detroit agree to that demand? The fact that you think his situation would be the same as Howard's goes a long way in explaining why this thread has dragged on for so long.

Actually no, that's not how it works. As a RFA, he has no way of leaving the team unless the team LETS him go. If he tries to sign somewhere else (minimum 3 or 4 year contract), we match, the end. If he demands a trade, we laugh, sign him to a long term contract, go about our day. The only way he could possibly leave is by playing one more year (in which we would sell him to the highest bidder) on the RFA tender (one year contract below his market value). This never happens for good players (case in point, Ben Gordon is the best player to ever take this route), because long term financial safety and stability always win out.

If Monroe demands a trade 5-7 years from now (at the end of his second contract), he has that right. If we aren't a competitive team 5-7 years from now, I am going to be pretty mad as fan too. But no one has the leverage to force a trade at the end of their rookie contract, that's the entire point of RFA.

Why didn't Howard ask to go the Lakers or Spurs -- teams that compete every season. How much will the Nets improve with him, as in contending for a title - I mean they only won 22 games last season?

Is he going to ask for another trade in 2 years?

If he does..THEN it's a Dwight problem. It doesn't matter why he wants to go to Brooklyn. If Nash wanted to go the Raptor to be back in Canada thats his choice.. Phoenix would have to take whatever Toronto was willing to give or let him walk on his own n get nothing in return.

Magic GM says they're still in talks.....please let Howard be traded somewhere..I don't want this to go on all season. Oh and please don't be a rental.

He might realize something is better than nothing but he might be saying Howard for the year might be better than what they're getting.

I think he realized the draft picks that were offered are worth shit.

We can't sign him to a new deal, without his permission dingbat. Sure we can give him his RFA tender, but thats a 1 yr deal not a long term contract. Its simple bud, in todays NBA if player A wants to go to team A, and player A is a star it happens.

Because, he can make a boatload of cash in Brooklyn. Have a new arena, and great team, owner that is going to compete, new facilities, and he doesn't have to follow in the footsteps of Shaq. Spurs aren't a big enough market, for his endorsements to reach that kicker.

Well I have to think I would be able to at least guess 5 teams that won't be in the playoffs next year. Raptors, Bobcats, Suns, Cavs, and Golden State.

Howard already stated he will sign longterm with the Nets. So yes If im the Nets I take the risk on his 1 year deal.

Like its been stated before my NBA knowledge is far past its prime but the Nets won 22 games last season. They can compete?

The deal to the Nets is dead. They just signed Lopez to a max contract.

No idea what this means especially coming from ESPN but:

"The Nets effectively ended their pursuit of Howard by agreeing to terms with center Brook Lopez on a four-year, $60 million max contract, a league source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com."

That doesn't matter, the sign n trade deal for the Howard trade included Lopez getting that contract.

Can't trade until Jan 15th. And who would want a Brooks Lopez max deal? Game over man, game over.

Next year. That's one pick. And still no guarantee.

Look, either you don't understand how the CBA and agents work, or you are just purposely being obtuse. If a player wants to leave in free agency, he can sign with whomever has the money to sign him, no one else. He can't force his way to team over the cap (most contenders). This is exactly why Dwight isn't going to play for the Nets. They have no cap room next season and Orlando didn't like their offer.

As for the RFA tender, no player has ever turned down a large long-term contract just to "get out" of their current situation. This isn't a rule specifically, but it's common sense. No agent is going to turn down the guaranteed dollars of a long term NBA contract. Injury, off-court problems, or just poor play could all seriously impact future contracts, and neither players nor agents will risk that. The only players who take that route are lower tier free agents who are hoping to get overpaid. Ben Gordon: prime example. These players don't lose much primarily because of the size of their tender (top picks who didn't live up to the hype) and notable interest after their 4th year. It doesn't happen with legitimate stars because those players always receive giant extensions, which are too enticing to pass up.
