What to do with Stafford

wait...you said he is better than Rogers and Mahomes. Wouldn't 100% of the league want him, since he would be an upgrade over every single QB in the league? :lmao::tup:

Cap implications for some teams. They have QBS they can't dump or trade.

But once again, you were proven wrong. So glad I could help you show you the error of your ways again

2/3 have better QBs, have younger/cheaper alternatives that are pretty close in talent, and a few teams couldn't pull it off due to cap situations

fify

realistic list of teams that would consider trading at least a first round pick for Matt

Bills - no, better/cheaper QB
Miami - Yes
NE - Yes
NYJ - Yes

Steelers - CAP
Ravens - no younger option
Browns - no younger, cheaper, similar
Bengals - no, younger, cheaper, similar

TN - no, set
Indy - YES
Texans - yes if they get rid of current
Jax - no, Lawrence

KC - no, younger, better QB
LF yes
Chargers, younger, cheaper, similar
Denver yes

Skins Yes
NYG Yes
Dallas if they get rid of Dak
Eagles maybe, they are a mess

GB Better QB
Bears yes
MN No, similar guy

NO CAP
TB possible but currently have a better
Car Yes
Atl CAP

Seattle, no
rams CAP/overpaid guy
AZ No, younger, cheaper
SF Yes

Watson and DAK will take two of those options away.

That is about 1/3 but very few that are just due to cap. Most already have a better or cheaper option.

SOURCE: 49ers Have the Inside Edge to Trade for Matthew Stafford
A source extremely close to the situation says the San Francisco 49ers are the favorites to land Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
GRANT COHN3 HOURS AGO
As teams line up to trade for Matthew Stafford, a source extremely close to the situation said that while nothing is done or close to being finalized, the San Francisco 49ers seem to have the inside edge to land Stafford in a trade with the Detroit Lions.

The source did not say what the 49ers would have to give the Lions to get Stafford, although it’s presumed the 49ers would have to trade at least their first-round pick this year. Nor did the source say whether the 49ers are Stafford’s first choice. He most likely would love their head coach, Kyle Shanahan, plus their star players such as George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, but probably wouldn’t love the California state taxes.

Still, the 49ers probably would give Stafford his best chance to win the Super Bowl within the next couple years.

Stafford, 32, is signed through 2022. He never has won a playoff game in his career, but he still is a very good quarterback, and he’s not cheap. Plus Detroit is on the verge of a mega rebuild. So he’s a bad fit for the Lions. Which is why they and Stafford recently mutually agreed to part ways.

Stafford has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in a season eight times, including this past season when he threw for 4,084 yards. The only quarterbacks in 49ers history who have thrown for more than 4,000 yards in a season are Steve Young and Jeff Garcia. So Stafford would give the 49ers something they haven’t had in decades.

And the 49ers would give Stafford something he hasn’t had since college -- a quality running game and a quality defense.

Stay tuned as this story develops.

Obviously we have a long way to go, but so far the two teams that keep coming up have been the Broncos and 49ers. Both pick pretty high in the 1st (9th, and 12th).

So many teams need a good QB. And he is one. Interest can mean lots of things but this is showing he is a good QB to get that many at least phone calls.

Stafford is a ?good? QB, as you stated. I think we?ll all agree on that. So let?s close this discussion ?for good and all.?

There were reports a year ago that stafford put his house on the market and were looking at homes in CA near the bay area. The 49er rumors have been a year in the making. But now if youre the lions....you move him to the highest bidder. You have to...

they both have a plethora of young quality WRs as well. I can see a 1st and a WR as a package.

9 and Hamler for Stafford? yes please.

I am still on the mindset to get picks. Holmes has proven to be a savvy college evaluator and has made a lot of good mid round picks. Dorsey is one of the best talent evaluators in the business. I would take a lower first rounder if it meant a couple extra picks. 1st 2nd and 4th from the Colts (21st) is more valuable then the 9th to me. Maybe I'm in the minority there, but we need a major youth talent infusion on this roster. I don't see why you couldn't tag Golladay and flip him for at least a 2nd , or pitch him and Stafford as a package to teams desperate for both a WR or QB (NE/WFT/Indy).

Players like Brandin Cooks have been traded two sperate time for 1st round picks. Golladay is young, and has proven to be a Pro Bowl WR. I understand he has an injury history, but I just don't see how you can't get something for this guy. Giants reportedly wanted him last year, I bet they would jump on getting him for their 2nd to give Daniel Jones a big target out wide.

KG is a free agent. you cant really trade him unless you tag him first. At that point its a 1 year rental and practically worthless.....MAYYYYYYBE a team jumps at it for a 3rd round pick. But yea, typically 1 year deals are worthless as far as a draft pick return goes.

Not all of us agree on that. He's had good years, average years and bad years. Imo he's average.

Is he even healthy or is he still gold bricking his injury?

Usually the team getting the player works out an extension beforehand Frank Clark, Clowney and Dee Ford are recent examples. If the Lions don?t either retain Golladay or tag and trade him I would see that as a failure. You don?t let young pro bowl players in their prime walk for nothing.

And yes I know Clowney was not extended, but he was tagged and traded.

for a 3rd rd pick. Seattle also got rid of some dead weight in that deal like Mingo's $5mil final year contract. At that point people still viewed CLowney as a top pass rusher...and the value was still only a 3rd rd pick.

People view Golladay as a injury prone 50/50 guy thats probably barely cracks the top 5 on the current FA WR list. Again...a real bad WR needy team like the jets might give up a 3rd rd pick on a tag n trade. Id expect most teams would offer a 4th or worse.

And with the cap being decreased less teams will want to sign an injured WR for big money.
