WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic:

The MLB draft is coming up in a few short weeks and the Tigers will be picking in the #12 slot now that the rules that rewarded tanking have been changed.

Last year, they selected a high school pitcher in Jackson Jobe. He is currently in Low A and not expected to see the majors for at least 3 years.

The Tigers have also been scouting high school players who are expected to be top choices in the draft. Again, these players would not be expected to contribute to the MLB club for years.

But reports have teams increasingly scouting players who are younger.

So how should the Tigers proceed in drafting players? Signing younger players incurs more risk but the chances of beating out other teams for greater talent is higher. Detroit signed Riley Greene this way.

However, their path to the majors will be longer.

Or should the Tigers focus on college players who come with less risk and are more likely to make the majors in a shorter period of time?
Which type of player should they focus more on drafting?

What type of player should the Tigers focus more on drafting?

1. High school players.

2. College-age players.
