Game 4: Saints @ Lions Thread

Everyone has reasons. Matt isn't the only one with injuries. Just an excuse.

Some QBs get more protection, run game and don't get hurt and play through it. Some teams don't have their number 2 WR traded mid season. Some QBs don't have weapon injuries like Marvin, KJ, Hock etc. Some QBs don't get hurt in MVP type season (2019)

Stafford is a borderline top 5 guy based on his play despite what happens around him.

Some don't but many do.

Only one pre-expansion team has never played in the Super Bowl. Guess which one? Several teams have both appeared and won the Super Bowl with an average to below-average QB.

LKP always has the same excuses. When he is talking about how great Stafford is he throws the rest of the team under the bus.

The same team that he calls
"full of talent"
"holeless"
"Plenty of coaching and talent"
"12-4 floor"

He's a clown

Good teams get hurt. Stafford gets hurt. Full of talent doesn't mean execution. Good coaches don't always have the team able to peak due to various reasons (injuries, youth needing more experience, takes time to build a roster, good players unexpected regression with age)

The teams have been good on paper but fall short for various reasons, injury being a big one. Talent does not mean execution. Keep repeating that dalton and you will understand what I am saying

Try and piece together what I'm saying in total and you'll understand. I know you are a little slow and don't get it and look at things in vacumn as either yes or no, but there are reasons and grey area for everything that happens to this team. You can be holeless with a good defense but lack the 1-2 great playmakers on defense for various reasons. You can be holeless then have a ton of offensive player injuries

Lions could very much turn it around in these next 12+ games. Let's find out

You can be holeless with a good defense but lack the 1-2 great playmakers on defense for various reasons.

so, you can be holeless without playmakers??? I would say a team without playmakers has holes in it.

Good playmakers not great. Not no playmakers. You can also have talented players not execute. Doesn’t mean they are a hole

Lions have 11 good starters and good depth on defense. So no holes. But there are no game changers so they need to play together as a team. And talented non holes can lack in execution sometimes. Finally someone that shouldn’t be a hole, can end up being one unexpectedly due to unforseen regression. Trufant possibly but he is dealing with injuries. Walker another good example, good player two previous years but ow just average in 2020. That can change in next 12 games as walker adjusts to box safety more. Tavai another one. Was more solid last year. Year 2 SHOULD be better. But he is worse. Also COVID offseason didn’t help these young players league wide

And then you have the extreme injuries to one position group. Like bears game you get Coleman and trufant hurt, and Okudah out. Starters and depth hurt leaves you with tony McRae getting torched and Bears coming back.

The point is moot...Dallas is perfectly happy with their Dalton and doesnt want our Dalton.

1. If Cooter "fixed" Stafford he would have a better job than RB coach for the fuckin Jets.

2. Your argument about Calvin and Stafford not having help is valid. I look at it this way.....I don't think even ONE of the guys we rolled out at WR as "compliments" to #81 ever got another job in football. So I looked it up.

Chris Durham was our #2 WR for a 2 year period. Chris fuckin Durham. 6 Catches after he left.
Titus (probably the most talented WR CJ had to play with in his first 7 years) Never played another down.
Burleson - average. Never played another down.
Scheffler -average - Not another down.
Pettigrew - Shit. - Not another down
Shawn McDonald - one good year....never caught another ball after Det.
Mike Furrey - Played one year after Detroit - 23 catches for 170 yards
Bryant Johnson - shit 2 years in Detroit - 6 catches after he left
Dennis Northcutt - Not another down after his 1 year.
Broyles - Never played another down after Det.
Golden Tate - Arrived in 2014. Great 4.5 years in Detroit.
Ebron - Junk

CJ's list of "compliments" in the first 7 years of his career is a joke. Tate arriving in 2014 was the first WR he played with that a DC had to pay any attention to. We had a 2 year period where our starters were CJ, Durham, Pettigrew and Burleson. LOL.

We had one year where it was CJ, Bryant Johnson, Dennis Northcutt and Pettigrew.

This year....every weapon on the planet.
1 win.
21st in passing yards (thats his thing isnt it?)
19th in points for...cant score.
Leading the league in rookie mistakes.

Like the Saints vs. the Lions when the Saints were down both starting CBs and Matt could only throw for 206 yards in a loss? Yup, that's an elite QB...top 5 baby! :lmao:

Protection was shoddy and no run game against Saints. Good weapons didn't get open enough. And Saints controlled TOP.

And Patrick Robinson and PJ Williams are solid backups. Plus the good players all around them to help them.

And Lions scored 29 points. That's good by the way. If you drop 29 you should win almost every game.

You can not have holes but underperform. Swift drop, underperform but he is a good receiving RB. Would be 2-2 right there. Not to mention Trufant and Coleman going down in that game allowing the Bears to come back.

KG missed the first 2 games by the way. So fully loaded at weapons didn't happen right away. We won against Cards and dropped 29 points with him back. Saints and Packers have good offenses by the way and do that to all teams.

But this won't somehow happen again, ever, to the Lions, when playing other opposition.

Which the Lions obviously lack, but this is inconsequential.

The Lions were ahead 14-0 and surrendered 35 straight points. So, 29 total points will not do in this situation.

Professionals never make excuses. That's what makes them professionals.

If the Lions were a good defensive team, they would subdue the Saints, Packers, and whatever other NFL teams you'd like to mention. But they are a bad defensive team, even when healthy.

Good defenses get torched by Saints/Packers

Missing three CBs and other players is a big deal for any defense.

And coaches do bring up injuries. They say its no excuse but the fact that they bring it up, shows it is a big factor. You can win if the other guys step up. Saints pass rush did and run D to help those good backup CBs. Lions have good backup CBs too. Okudah is technically a backup and Roberts is playing solid. Lions front 7 needs to step up. They have the talent to play better and will face weaker offenses now to dominate. Packers and Saints can torch good defenses.

Lions can pass pro better to win games. And if you score 29, you are going to win many games. It's on the defense to do more. Pass coverage and run defense

Lions have a great chance and the talent and the coaching to turn it around in the next 12 games. Let's start with the Jags. Lions are more talented but need to execute

Lions weapons need to more. And rub routes need to work. Other offenses are so damn cheap running them but it works. Lions man up and just play and still do really well on offense.

Reduced-form box score stat scouting suggests Stafford’s task is not being made easier by the guys on the other end of the throws. For the eight games he played in 2019, according to the advanced passing stats on Pro Football Reference there were just nine credited dropped passes (3.2% drops). Through just the first four games of 2020, there are already 12 credited drops (9.0% drops). The bad throw percentage for 2020 is slightly higher (21.6% versus 20.8% last year), but there is a much bigger increase in the on-target throw rate for Stafford (76.9% this year versus 70.8% last year). So, while there are some bad throws in there on the quarterback’s side of the ledger, it looks like the people catching the ball are not helping much when the passes are being delivered fine.

There is more to this than simply making separation moves against man coverage and avoiding drops, though. Many things the receivers do in terms of route running do not show up on even the advanced stat tracking by NFL NextGen Stats. Yes, the average separation is terrible for all three starting wide receivers (all are under 3.0 yards average separation) and even tight end T.J. Hockenson is only barely higher (3.1 yards). Can’t we scheme the receivers open more?
