Lions Release TE Eric Ebron

Guess we have to see what the counter move is going to be . EE was improving on the field so my guess is after no takers in a deal that Patrica and Quinn wanted him out of the locker room.

This makes zero sense unless another move is gonna follow. They don’t need the cap room since all of the big name FA are off the market, and they literally have no TEs on their roster. If they knew Ebron was gonna be cut, why the hell didnt they match the offer sheet for Fells? It makes no sense...

8.5 mil off the cap. I cant believe he was going to make that much. I bet they tried to get that figure down and he said no and they let him go

While I agree Ebron is overpaid, that extra $8.5 in cap space provides very little value at the moment. I have to imagine Quinn knew Ebron was gonna be cut a few days ago, why wait until all of the high end FAs are off the market to free up cap space?

Overpaid or not, Ebron playing for the Lions in 2018 is much more valuable than having some extra cap space.

Much more valuable? No. They can scrap together similar production through a couple TEs. He didn't bring anything unique or special to the position at his price point.

The extra space will also help around the June 1st cuts.

Helps explain why we haven't landed anyone yet. We're getting priced out by teams with too much cap room to play with.

I just think the timing is strange. They had around $16m of cap space pior to cutting ebron. Now they $24m. If they did this on Monday, and then went out and used that money to sign a big name FA, or even several “middle tier” FAs, then I could understand. But they waited until 95% of the top 150 FAs were already off the market to cut him. Now that cap space isn’t as valuable in my opinion.

Edit on cap space - apparently it’s even higher. Roughly $35 million

I think they incorrectly figured what some of these free agents would get in the market. Let's be honest, it's been a good year to be an NFL player because teams are offering more than they should be, which is making other teams counter-offer even more.

I really think the Lions saw a market they couldn't compete in at a realistic budget and dumped Ebron to have a bit more wiggle room to work.

So we went from nothing at TE to nothing and 8.5 million.
Although not sure what we will do with that money.

Why do they need a TE? Ebron was just a WR anyways.. a bad one at that.

I feel like this can't be overstated. Ebron was a bigger guy, but he was worthless as a blocker. Golladay could probably play "TE" a well as Ebron.
