MLB 2020 Draft - Tigers Draft Spencer Torkelson #1 And sign him to $8.4 Million Bonus

It just may be good news for Detroit Tiger fans. The experiment of moving Spencer Torkelson to third base appears to be coming to an end. He's been asked to play more first base in Toledo.

Multiple scouts point to Tork's inability to play third and bobbling of routine balls. Combine that with the Tigers' need to fill a first base hole in Detroit and the fine performance of Candelario at third, it's a logical decision.

What this could mean is that Torkelson, with his promotion, could be fast-tracked to Detroit next year. With his recent promotion to Toledo, he could see Comerica as soon as the beginning of next year.

Spencer Torkelson made the Opening Day roster this year but ended up struggling at the plate. Around the All-Star break, he was sent down to Toledo where he is continuing to struggle. He is currently hitting .212/.281/.346/.627.

The Tigers have not had a full-time 1Ber since 2020 and have been platooning since Tork?s demotion. He has been a plus defender at 1B.

Call-ups are in September. Should the Tigers bring him back to Detroit for more experience and evaluation? Another opportunity to prepare for the 2023 season?

They currently have no other prospects who are easily seen as candidates inheriting the 1B position.

Or will bringing him back only compound his offensive issues?
Should the Tigers keep him Toledo for the rest of the season?
Should Spencer Torkelson be called up in September?

1. Yes, bring him back to Detroit.

2. No, keep him in Toledo.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic:

The Detroit Tigers are about to expand their roster by 2 players. It has been reported that they are having a hard time deciding if they will recall Spencer Torkelson who was sent down in July for offensive woes.
In 33 games (through Monday?s games), he is doing only slightly better, but still struggling. His slash line is .234/.349/.403/.753

There is a question whether or not the Tigers have anyone else deserving to be called up.

Should Tork be recalled? Would it help or hurt him?

Is he better off working with the Mud Hens hitting coach, Adam Melhuse or should he be in Detroit seeing MLB pitching and under the watchful eye of A. J. Hinch? Or will Scott Coolbaugh?s coaching derail any progress?

If not Torkelson, then who else would benefit from being in Detroit?

Should Spencer Torkelson be recalled to Detroit for September?

1. Yes

2. No
