MLB 2020 Draft - Tigers Draft Spencer Torkelson #1 And sign him to $8.4 Million Bonus

There seems to be an increasing expectation that the Tigers will take Arizona State first baseman Spencer Torkelson with the first overall pick in the amateur draft, according to both Lynn Henning of the Detroit News and Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press.

While nothing will be certain until Torkelson?s name is called, the slugger is considered the top prospect available by many pundits, and is perhaps something of a safer pick. Perfect Game national director Brian Sakowski tells Fenech that the lack of spring baseball created less opportunity for any prospect to showcase new skills or have a breakout performance, so while Vanderbilt?s Austin Martin may not necessarily be behind Torkelson on Detroit?s draft board, the lack of clarity about Martin?s future defensive position might inspire the Tigers to just go with Torkelson?s more obvious power potential.

Henning is even more straight-forward in his assessment, writing ?the Tigers are all but certain to take Torkelson,? as he would immediate become the headline bat in a Detroit farm system that is rich in quality young arms but short on blue chip hitting prospects.

It?s Mike Elias? Party? The Rest of us are just Guests

I know nothing.

That?s right, everyone. After following the draft closely for more than 20 years and having the innate ability to regale you with stories like why Matt Wheatland was not a bad pick for the Tigers in 2000, I sit here before you and claim ignorance. The COVID-19-inspired shutdown, which hit the US just as league play was starting in most college conferences and high school ball was commencing across the sunbelt, didn?t just force amateur baseball to grind to a halt. It also drove pro scouts and executives underground.

So as GMs, scouting directors, and cross checkers remain in the shadows, we draft prognosticators must forecast the upcoming festivities without a compass, GPS, or even a clue where Dayton Moore will be spending his next five weekends. The result, my friends, will be mock drafts that will make as much sense as that old trigonometry assignment you found when you last cleaned your mother?s attic.

So, instead of lamenting the fact I can?t make six calls to find out whether Jerry DiPoto was in Tallahassee last Friday to watch Reid Detmers stymie the FSU hitters with his 12-to-6, I?ve decided to have some fun and guide you all on what could be the craziest evening of some people?s baseball lives.

Enjoy!

The 2020 MLB draft will be 5 rounds long, which seems like a bad idea all around.
The draft will be held on June 10 as planned, and the Tigers still have the No. 1 overall pick.

I heard the players association didn't like MLB proposal of their draft plan. I would think they'd need to approve it.
