San Fran renaming schools

“Complicated” is a red-flag word, I agree. “Complex” is not. Consider everything that transpired from 1776 to 1865 and recall that an infinitesimal amount of it has ever been captured. There is still so much to uncover.

I think history is complicated.

It's complicated right now. People I respect that I believe to be kind and smart voted for Trump. Explaining how that can be given what I understand of Trump is complicated.

Some people you believe to be kind and smart are stupid?

Some don't care?

Some were just fucking with you?

Or maybe Biden wasn't really what he claimed to be, as much of "clear alternative" to Trump & the GOP as the media wants you to believe?

Or the machinery of the Federal government has been increasingly geared to serve the wealthiest one percent at the expense of the rest of us, and on some level they felt that Trump "gumming up" the bureaucracy with his incompetence and general shittiness was preferable to the more slick Joe Biden letting the bureaucrats continue operating unabated, and they voted accordingly?

Maybe that last one does get a little complicated... but when you clear away all the cruft, it's still about how the pie gets divided and doled out.

This isn't "history" though, it's contemporary politics, which is intended to be complicated and deceptive. We're not supposed to know what we're getting.

I think it's the same. Kind and smart people can believe the "Southern Heritage" stuff they grew up with, unaware of how exactly it was passed down to them. Awareness is getting better though.

Sometimes the explanation of the causes of significant events involves politics and is therefore complicated.

probably has to do with the inability to separate Trump's personality from his policies. It's the opposite with Biden - to his supporters and sycophants in the media, he's normal boring Joe, but his policies are anything but.

So you think I'm more left than I think I am, but would like Trump's policies if I could see past his personality?

I think a lot of people can't separate personality from policy for Trump or Biden and the powers that be in gov't and media like it that way - and go to great lengths to make/keep it that way.

Including me?
How far left do you think I am?
How far left do you think Trump's policies are?

- quite possibly, yes
- it depends on the issue, I don't think you're a socialist or far left but I'd probably put you further left on the spectrum than you would put yourself.
- while I still doubt some of Trump's personal convictions, like his position on abortion, I think his policies are a mix but on balance conservative. And I think some, not all, but some of his less conservative positions are more tactical than actual policy positions (tariffs would be an example).

Like I said before, I care a lot less about his personality and what he says than what he does and based on his accomplishments, I rank him a close second to Reagan for greatest POTUS of my lifetime (so far).

This surprised me. I didn't think you'd give straightforward answers. Good work.

I'm not the one who has a problem answering questions and I usually make my positions pretty clear. plus, most of it is stuff I've already said - more than once.

OH NOES the Woke Mob has claimed another victim!!!111:
Valparaiso University is searching for a new sports mascot.

The private Lutheran school announced Thursday it's dropping the Crusader, who has been a presence at Valpo games for years.

University interim president Colette Irwin-Knott said in a video news release the Crusaders mascot promotes "aggressive religious oppression and violence" the school doesn't want to project.

She cited use of "crusader" imagery in recent hate speech and by the Ku Klux Klan.

Oh come on... The Klan is just like one guy, not even a real thing anymore, and they were DEMOCRATS, you understand, DEMOCRATS, so they're actually a leftist organization and that's why liberals and the left are the REAL racists (ed note: am I doing it right?)

But in all seriousness, I'm amazed anyone with even a modicum of historical knowledge would want to be associated with the Crusades, particularly on the Christian side... particularly if you are a Christian university, dedicated to spreading the message and non-violent, compassionate teachings of Jesus Christ.
