Tigers 2023 Spring Training Thread

Tigers To Place Tyler Nevin On 10-Day IL.
As expected, the Tigers will place Tyler Nevin on the 10-day injured list to begin the season.

Nevin suffered a Grade 1 oblique strain a little less than three weeks ago, making it doubtful that the 25-year-old would be fully recovered in time for Opening Day. However, it is possible Nevin won?t miss much time, as Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that Nevin is on pace to start a rehab assignment this week.

Even a brief IL stint isn?t an ideal way for Nevin to begin his tenure with his new team, as he was only acquired by the Tigers in a swap with the Orioles back in December. Nevin?s ability to play both corner infield and outfield positions makes him an interesting commodity on Detroit?s roster, as this versatility and Nevin?s right-handed bat made him a natural platoon partner or complement to such left-handed batters as Austin Meadows, Akil Baddoo, Nick Maton, or Kerry Carpenter.

Alex Lange established himself as one of Detroit?s best relievers last year. Over 71 appearances, the 27-year-old right-hander allowed just 47 hits while fanning 82 batters in 63-and-a-third innings. I recently asked veteran backstop Tucker Barnhart about Lange?s power arsenal.

?In my opinion, Alex Lange had the best overall stuff on that team,? said Barnhart, who caught for Detroit last season and is now with the Chicago Cubs. ?His stuff is way, way up there. The things he can do with the baseball are incredible. He just started throwing it last year, and his sinker was moving at 18-19-20 horizontal. He?s a special dude. I loved catching him, for sure.?

Can you visualize what bat speed looks like?

A higher bat speed helps hitters get to pitches they may have previously missed, expanding their hitting zones and making them harder to pitch to!

See how we breakdown bat speed in our latest video at

Spencer Torkelson is a product of this in 2023..Mike Trout suggested Torkelson use a bat that was an ounce lighter and a 1/2 inch shorter..made a definite difference to him beating the FB to the spot out front..

Jonathan Schoop finally hit his 1st HR today. Cutting it a little close as this is the last ST game. Austin Meadows and Javy Baez are the only 2 regulars who have not hit a single HR.

On the other hand, Nick Maton and Parker Meadows have hit 5 HRs each. Expect Maton for a number of reasons to make the Opening Day roster.
If Parker continues to hit (and learns how to hit LHP) it's only a matter of time before he's called up.

Tigers roster moves: Zack Short and Akil Baddoo optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Reassigned to MiLB camp: pitchers Jace Fry, Trevor Rosenthal and Matt Wisler, position players Jonathan Davis, C?sar Hern?ndez, Andrew Knapp and Michael Papierski.

There are 30 players in MLB camp.

The Tigers have acquired infielder Zach McKinstry from the Cubs in exchange for right-hander Carlos Guzman.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Tigers placed right-handed reliever Freddy Pacheco on the 60-day injured list.

In today's fun with Statcast, your Tigers leader in average exit velocity this spring was none other than Colt Keith. 97.2 mph average off the bat.
88.6 mph was the MLB average in 2022.
