Here are the key dates in the 147 days between now and Opening Day 2020.

Oct. 31: Eligible players may file for free agency. The Tigers have five players in that category: starting pitchers Edwin Jackson, Matt Moore and Tyson Ross; and infielders Gordon Beckham and Jordy Mercer.

Oct. 31-Nov. 4: Shhh! It?s the five-day quiet period in which teams may negotiate exclusively with their free agents but no one else. Tigers are unlikely to re-sign any of their free agents. If they do decide to bring back, say, Beckham on a minor-league pact, there?s no urgency to get a deal done.

Nov. 4: Last day to extend qualifying offer to free agents. By extending a qualifying offer -- a one-year deal for about $18 million -- teams are entitled to draft pick compensation if the player ultimately signs with another team. The Tigers obviously have no one to whom they would consider extending an offer. In an alternative universe, Nicholas Castellanos might have been a candidate. But he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in July. That?s actually good news for Castellanos, because he?s no longer eligible to receive a qualifying offer, which can depress a player?s value on the free-agent market.

Nov. 4: Last day for teams or players to exercise contract options. The Tigers have no players with pending contract options and no decisions to make.

Nov. 4: Players who are eligible to be minor-league free agents may begin signing with other clubs. The Tigers have a slew of potential minor-league free agents, most notably outfielder Jose Azocar and pitcher Anthony Castro. If the Tigers haven?t added Azocar and Castro to the 40-man roster by this date, it means they have already agreed to a new minor-league deal or the Tigers are willing to let them pursue other teams.

Nov. 4: BBWAA Awards finalists announced.

Nov. 4: Hall of Fame Modern Baseball Era Committee ballot candidates announced.

Nov. 6: Wilson Defensive Players of the Year announced.

Nov. 7: Silver Sluggers announced.

Nov. 8: Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners announced. No Tigers are among the finalists.

Nov. 11-14: MLB General Manager Meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Nov. 11: Rookies of the Year announced.

Nov. 12: Managers of the Year announced.

Nov. 13: Cy Young Awards announced.

Nov. 14: MVP Awards announced.

Nov. 14: Deadline for players to accept or reject qualifying offer.

Nov. 18: BBWAA 2020 Hall of Fame ballot released.

Nov. 19-21: MLB owners meetings in Arlington, Texas.

Nov. 20: Deadline for teams to add players to the 40-man roster for the purposes of protecting them from selection in the Rule 5 Draft. The Tigers added seven players two years ago but added only one last year. This year there are several strong candidates, including obvious choices like prospects Daz Cameron, Beau Burrows and Isaac Paredes. Generally, players drafted out of college in 2016 will be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft for the first time this winter, along with international or high school players signed in 2015 or earlier.

Dec. 2: Non-tender deadline: Last day for teams to offer 2020 contracts to unsigned players on their 40-man rosters. Most of the Tigers? non-tender candidates have already been released, but if there?s a late decision on an arbitration-eligible player, it would come on this day.

Dec. 8: Hall of Fame Modern Baseball Era committee announces 2020 inductees (if any) in San Diego.

Dec. 9-12: MLB Winter Meetings in San Diego, Calif.

Dec. 12: Rule 5 Draft.

Jan. 10: Teams and unsigned arbitration-eligible players exchange proposed salaries.

Jan. 21: BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot results announced.

Feb. 3-21: Salary arbitration hearings in Phoenix. The Tigers have gone to arbitration with a player once once since 2001, winning a case against pitcher Michael Fulmer last spring.

Feb. 11: Voluntary spring reporting date for pitchers, catchers and injured players.

Feb. 16: Voluntary reporting date for other players.

Feb. 21: Mandatory reporting date.

Feb. 21: Tigers play exhibition against Southeastern (Fla.) University at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.

Feb. 22: Tigers open Grapefruit League season against the Philadelphia Phillies in Lakeland.

March 26: Opening Day: Tigers open 2019 season against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Active rosters must be reduced to 26 players.
