Tigers Sign Eduardo Rodriguez, Injured finger, now possible opt out or trade

Latest Eduardo Rodriguez buzz shows Red Sox desperate to keep him.

The Detroit Tigers' newest acquisition, Eduardo Rodriquez, isn't a stranger to Detroit personnel. He'll be reunited with his former pitching coach, Juan Nieves. Tigers had the advantage of having more intel about him over the other 4 teams in the mix to sign Rodriguez.

This, to me, is significant. Rodriguez made 15 starts against AL East teams, five against the Yankees -- heavy right-handed hitting lineups. So his elevated slash-line numbers might be misleading. Also love the 31% whiff rate with his 92-93 mph heater up in the zone.
Chris McCoskey

I wonder when they tell Al Avila they signed EROD?
Nice of Hinch who is actually running everything, let Al do the honors of saying they signed him.

The next SP signing will be small.. or not at all.. don?t sleep on how effective Tyler Alexander was the last 6 weeks of the season..plus you have Wentz and Faedo.

Don?t be surprised if Tigers sign their shortstop before December 1. They?d like to have their big signings in place before any possible lockout, which would shut down free-agency.

Say good bye to Matthew Boyd.

Rodriguez had a 4.16 ERA and 3.32 FIP last season for the Red Sox. Finished sixth in Cy Young voting in 2019.

Let's also add that ERod's 10.6 strikeouts/9 inn and FIP (3.32) both ranked 4th in the AL last year. In August and September, he went 6-2 with an 3.07 ERA - and half those games were played in hitter-friendly Fenway.

In 2020, the Tigers offensively had the majors' lowest walk rate/highest K rate. So they used a limited FA budget to sign Robbie Grossman as a way to begin addressing that. In 2021, their pitchers had the 7th-worst BB rate (9.3)/4th worst K rate (20.4).

Eduardo Rodriguez had a 4 percent walk rate/28 percent K rate. Detroit again was looking to begin addressing a larger team issue; this time with considerably more dollars to spend. Those were both career-bests for ERod. Will he retain it?

He's a veteran presence offering mentoring and stability. The Tigers had MLB's highest number of starts last year by rookies - 77.

He also has solid defensive stats for a team that ranked near the bottom defensively last year with - 35 DFS. You need strength up the middle and combined with Tucker Barnhart, the Tigers are starting to shore up the middle.

This is why you have to look beyond the stats like ERA of the Detroit Tigers' signing of Eduardo Rodriquez. He checks off so many of the boxes that can provide solutions to the weak areas of this team. This is how you get better.

Eduardo Rodriguez is guaranteed $28 million in the first two years of his new contract with the Tigers. So if he opts out after 2023, he?ll leave three years and $49 million on the table.

Boyd was too up and down. Even E Rod's worst season is better than Boyd's usual

Tigers make a statement with Eduardo Rodriguez.
The five-year deal brings the 28-year-old lefty to Detroit over the same window as Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal.

Signing Eduardo Rodriguez shows the Detroit Tigers are serious.

Eduardo Rodriguez has the 3rd highest projected fWAR among all starters available this off-season. This *could* be a pretty significant bargain.

It's nice that they got another mid level starter. I would have preferred a shorter contract.

Looks like there is a player option after 2 years. He is due $28M over the first 2 years and $49M over the last 3. Not bad. I'm hoping it ends up being a 2 year deal. That would mean he out performed his $14M salary the first 2 years of the deal and would elect to be a free agent.

Good sign. Imo, 5 years is not too long.. Get a vet that also still in his 20's to work with the youngsters. Bonus is the Red Sox lost him though we don't compete directly with us.

Today, another chance for readers to have increased opportunities to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful conversations and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversation threads with not just comments but replies to others. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic. For this blog only, a maximum of 10 sentences please.

The Tigers signed free agent Eduardo Rodriguez this week to be part of their starting rotation. He will join Matt Manning, Casey Mize, Tarik Skuball and TBD on the mound.

For the Red Sox, ERod was named Opening Day starter and also the first to pitch in the playoffs. He had the team?s best record on the starting rotation.

He will automatically slot into the #1 position with the Tigers.

But will he stay there after the 2022 season?

If the Tigers have a great season, will that change their plans for 2023 with the need to add a bigger star pitcher?

Or will Manning, Mize or Skuball jump to the top of the heap as they further develop?

Or will Rodriguez maintain his status as top dog by pitching even more effectively given that he?s moving from one of MLB?s most hitter-friendly parks to one that is very pitcher-friendly?

What do you think?

Choose from the 2 options below. To make it challenging, there?s no fence-sitting on this one!

And as always, feel free to explain your rationale in the comments section.

Will Eduardo Rodriguez keep his #1 slot in the rotation in 2023?

1. Yes, he'll stay in the top slot.

2. No, the Tigers will replace him with someone stronger.
