Offseason Deals and Rumors

Yep that's what I think or maybe get a prospect thrown in.

Well Kemp is owed 107 million. The Dodgers were kicking in $32 million leaving the Padres on the hook for 75 million over 5 years, basically meaning the Padres are going to pay Kemp 15 million a year.

Now, that's pretty cheap for what Kemp is capable of, but now when you factor the injury liability the Padres will probably want the Dodgers to kick in a little more money so that if Kemp does go down or become a walking 60-day DL guy, they wont have to lose as much. A prospect is nice, but salary relief would probably be more welcome as a fall-back plan if Kemp can't play.

Get the Dodgers to kick in another 20 million and it looks like a really nice deal for SD even with the risks.

Sorry guys Kemp is a turd. The Dodgers ate some of his contract to get someone to take him. That's how bad he is. I just can't drink the Matt Kemp Kool Aid. He got his big contract - I truly think he has lost his desire to play the game. I doubt he will still be playing baseball by the end of his contract. Just my 2 cents.

I am in agreement with Cespedes though. Porcello should not have been traded.

We aren't talking about Carl Crawford or Ryan Howard, both of whom are in the Rajai Davis area for offense. We are talking about a top 10 offensive player, who hits for high average. How is he a turd?

He has been great but there is a slow decline in his numbers and with his injury history combined with his age and it is reasonable to assume that his decline will continue. Still, given the skyrocketing salaries, if the Tigers could have given Avila and 2 prospects for Kemp, a shitty catcher and $32M I would have been OK with that....it would have been a risk worth taking IMO

That statement could also apply for Miguel Cabrera. It could even apply to Victor Martinez until last year, which was a fluke.

Why would you trade Avila in this deal? That makes no sense at all.

I was just replacing what the Padres sent...a catcher and 2 prospects.

As far as Miggy....I have been and still am against that extension they gave him.

So, you are saying you don't want Miguel Cabrera for $15 Mil a season because he is in a slow decline with his numbers and with his injury history combined with his age, you assume that his decline will continue?

Additionally, when the trade was initially made, the Dodgers were also in a market for a starting 2B and starting SS. I doubt trading Avila creating a hole is a smart option. We have no clue what McCann can do, but I doubt it is at the same level as Avila.

You think Matt Kemp is a turd, yet Ian Kinsler can walk on water.

That just does not compute Will Robinson.

I was just throwing out the trade that was made....not going into what I thought the Tigers would give up for him. If they wanted Kinsler and a few prospects for Kemp and $32M I would have gone for that as well.

As far as Miggy...$15M a year for the next 10 years would be GREAT....Just not thrilled with $30M a year until he is 40

The thing about Miggy is we don't give that to him, he could have left us. And to many of us, as with Verlander, he's more important than just the salary he makes, or the numbers he puts up as he gets older. Kaline and Trammell were not great players at the end of their careers, but nobody wanted them in another uniform.

Miggy and Justin have a chance to end up as all-time Tiger greats, and overall greats. If overpaying a little is the pricetag for seeing Miguel go to the Hall of Fame in an Olde English D hat, I am very comfortable with that.

I'm not that way with players. I really don't have any connection with them. I really couldn't care less if someone retires a Tiger or goes to the HOF as a Tiger. I care about the long term success of the team on the field...I don't care about the individual players.

Part of my problem with supporting this present team is the lack of emotional connection to the players as individuals and to the team as a whole. It's such a mercenary-based business these days and it affects my outlook.

I get that. When I was a kid I probably got attached to the players more but now I treat it more as pure entertainment. I root for the players to do well while they are helping the Tigers win...when they leave (which most of them do) I root for the next guy to do well and help the team win.

Now the NFL...that is a different story. I think that fantasy football has changed my outlook on the NFL all together. I have more fun with my fantasy team than any NFL team I might follow. Again...just entertainment to me.

I wish we had waited to make our trade till the Padres were done, Seth Smith is probably available now, basically the exact guy we needed. Now we're stuck with Cespedes.

Problem is contracts now a days are so bad that they turn the fans on the players. You give out a ridiculous long contract to a player on the wrong side of 30 you will have a lot of fans hating those deals as time goes on. It has already started with Verlander, Miggy has a couple of down years he will get boo'd.

well, IF the Tigers have anything the Padres want who's to say they still couldn't trade for him?
