May 31 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917: Ty Cobb collects three hits and starts what will be a 35-game hitting streak, the second longest of his storied career. Cobb hits .383 and wins his 10th batting title in 1917.
In all, Cobb will have five hitting streaks of 20 games or more in his 24-year career.

1925: Ty Cobb's 275th triple makes him the first player ever with 1,000 extra-base hits. He will finish his career with 1,136 extra-base hits, the all-time record until Babe Ruth passes him on June 21, 1931.

1927: There is an unassisted triple play for the second consecutive day in the major leagues. During the 9th inning of a game at Tiger Stadium, Detroit first baseman Johnny Neun completes the rare play by catching a Homer Summa line drive, tagging Charlie Jamieson between first and second, and then touching second before Glenn Myatt can return. Detroit beats the Indians, 1 - 0.

Babe Ruth presents New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell with his '36 MVP Award at the Polo Grounds! The Babe didn't provide any good luck as Carl's record 24 game win streak ended that day with a 10-3 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers!
His last defeat came on July 13, 1936, 1 - 0 to the Chicago Cubs.

1938: Lou Gehrig plays in his 2,000th consecutive game and collects a RBI single, helping the Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox, 12 - 5.

1944: Al Unser hits his only home run of the season, a pinch-hit grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, helping the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 6 - 2.

1956: Tigers beat Cleveland 7-4 on a walk-off 3-run home run by Charlie Maxwell in the bottom of the 9th.

1961: Batting for Carl Yastrzemski, Boston Red Sox pinch hitter Carroll Hardy bunts for a single in the 8th inning of 7 - 6 loss to the Yankees. Hardy will be the only player to pinch-hit for both Yastrzemski and Ted Williams.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2qrpduX...g&name=900x900

1968: Willie Horton homers and Mickey Lolich pitches a 4-hit shutout with 8 Ks as Tigers win 1-0 over the yankees.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4677DgX...jpg&name=small

1969: Joe Sparma takes no-hitter into 9th inning, then hangs on for a 3-2 win over the Seattle Pilots.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D75c2EgW...jpg&name=small

1970: Luis Aparicio and Walt Williams of the Chicago White Sox each collect five hits in a 22 - 13 rout of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Williams also scores five times. Chicago (24) and Boston (16) collect 40 hits, one short of the American League record for two teams in a regular game set in 1950.

1976: Mark Fidrych pitches an 11-inning complete game and defeats the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-4. The victory is the third of the year for Fidrych, who goes on to win Rookie of the Year honors in the American League.

1977: Tigers beat the A's 5-2 at Tiger Stadium. In a rare start, John Hiller goes 8 strong innings.

1979: In his major league debut, with his brother Tom starting for the Blue Jays, Pat Underwood pitches 8 scoreless innings in the Tigers' 1-0 win.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D75gqe5X...jpg&name=small

1983: American League President Lee MacPhail suspends Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for one week, citing "repeated problems" with the outspoken owner's public criticism of umpires. Steinbrenner, who was fined $50,000 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn during spring training for berating some National League umpires, cannot attend games or be in his Yankee Stadium office during the suspension.

1984: Off day. Tigers notes for from the Toledo Blade:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cjz5hDMVAAQXVy4.jpg

1996: The Atlanta Braves traded Anton French (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Danny Bautista.

2010: The Tigers designate pitcher Dontrelle Willis for assignment. He seemed to have turned a corner in his comeback bid when he made the Tigers' starting rotation out of spring training, but has only won one game all season. This may not yet be the end of the line for the gregarious lefthander, though, as both the Diamondbacks and Marlins have shown interest in acquiring his services. On June 1st, Willis will be traded to Arizona for P Billy Buckner.

2016: Ian Kinsler hits his first career grand slam, but the Tigers suffer their 17th loss of the month. Miguel Cabrera, J.D. and Victor Martinez, and Justin Upton also homer.

2017: The Astros continue their torrid pace with a 17 - 5 beat down of the Twins at Target Field, their seventh straight win. They hit a season-high six homers, including a pair by George Springer, and now have 38 wins, five more than any other major league team. Their lead in the AL West is already 11 games.

2018: Ronny Rodriguez gets a hit in his first major league at bat, and finishes 2-for-4 in a 6-2 win over the Angels.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

After a horrendous April start, the Tigers have been playing over .500 baseball and have been sitting in 2nd place in the AL Central. Through Monday?s contests, they remain 2 games under .500. They have yet to reach .500.

The MLB trade deadline is in 2 months. How should the Tigers handle it should they remain in contention for the AL Central title and/or a wild card slot?

Will you consider them to be serious contenders or would you simply want them to perform as best as possible and see where it gets them? Will the fact that the AL Central?s reputation as the weakest one impact your decision?

Or is it time for the Tigers to stop trading off their talent?

On the other hand, do you think the trade deadline is a chance for the team to make a jump in acquiring talent? Will trading off certain players help them take a bigger step towards contending next year? Could they solve some current roster problems or receive multiple players in return who will strengthen the roster?

It?s unlikely that the Tigers will be buyers in the traditional sense ? trading off young, promising talent to get an established well-known player. They are not at that point yet.

So the question to ask is whether they should be sellers or should they stand pat for the most part? Should they trade off some talent in order to strengthen their future roster or should they retain their stronger players so they may help the team compete for the rest of the year?

What should the Tigers do by the trade deadline?

1. They should be sellers.

2. They should stand pat.

June 1 in Tigers and mlb history:

1906: Women appear at the Polo Grounds ticket windows for the first time. Coincidentally, new ticket-selling machines are also introduced.

1910: The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 10 - 5, before a chilly crowd of 800 fans at the Baker Bowl. It is the 14th loss for the Phillies in their last 15 games. The Cardinals are paced by leadoff hitter Miller Huggins, who has no official at bats in six plate appearances, the first time this has ever happened in major league history. Huggins walks in his first three at-bats, hits a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt in the next two, and walks with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to drive in the lead run. At the end of the season, Huggins will lead the National League with 116 walks.

1917: Hank Gowdy of the Boston Braves became the first major leaguer to enlist in World War I. Gowdy will also serve in World War II.

1923: Scoring in every inning, the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies at the Baker Bowl, 22 - 8. It is the first time in 20th century a team has scored in every inning.

1925: Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees pinch-hits for Pee Wee Wanninger, beginning his streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games. The next day, first baseman Wally Pipp shows up with the after-effects of a concussion, and Gehrig takes over.

1941 - Mel Ott hits a two-run home run, the 400th of his major league career and his 1,499th and 1,500th RBI, helping the New York Giants to a 3 - 2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

1955 - Duke Snider hits three home runs at Ebbets Field, helping the Brooklyn Dodgers to an 11 - 8 victory over the Milwaukee Braves. The Dodgers also set a franchise record with six home runs.

1958: Al Kaline homered to lead off the bottom of the second inning against Chicago?s Ray Moore but the game was rained out after 3 1/3 innings. This homer would have given Kaline 400 for his career.

2000: As owners struggle over the question of realignment, the Players Association suggests a simpler plan which only moves the Houston Astros from the NL Central to the AL West, thus creating two 15-team leagues. The owners' ideas would have the newest franchises, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks, switch leagues, the elimination of the National League wild card, and the AL Central consisting of six teams to go along with six divisions with only four teams - four of them in the NL.
In the end, the status quo will prevail, but the Players Association's plan will eventually be implemented in 2013.

2007: The Detroit Tigers signed Alan Mills as a free agent.

2010: The Detroit Tigers traded Dontrelle Willis and cash to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Billy Buckner.

2021: Tigers get 2 home runs each from Eric Haase and Jonathan Schoop, and a bases clearing double from Miguel Cabrera in the Tigers 10 - 7 win over the brewers. The double by Cabrera was his 400th as a Tiger and the 583rd of his career, tying Robin Yount for 21st on the all-time list.
Cabrera is the eighth player to hit 400 doubles in a Tigers? uniform, joining Ty Cobb (665), Charlie Gehringer (574), Harry Heilmann (499), Al Kaline (498), Lou Whitaker (420), Alan Trammell (412) and Sam Crawford (405).

Days of Roar Tigers Podcast: Eduardo Rodriguez, Riley Greene out with injuries: Here's what we learned from two doctors. 35 minutes.

With both Eduardo Rodriguez and Riley Greene heading to the injured list, the Free Press talked to two orthopedic surgeons to learn more about their injuries.

How long should we expect E-Rod or Greene to be out? What does this mean for the Detroit Tigers' chances of taking the AL Central?
What about the trade deadline? Who could the team potentially call up?
Who should they call up? Mark and Evan go over these questions and more in this emergency podcast edition of "Days of Roar."

Detroit Tigers' Riley Greene is seeing a specialist for his stress fracture. It is created by repetitive force, overuse or increasing the amount of exercise/intensity too quickly. The question is whether the recent diving catch and wall collision crash were factors at all.
