June 4 in Tigers and mlb history:

1906: Unable to shake the effects of diphtheria contracted in the spring? a frustrated Christy Mathewson throws a rare tantrum after giving up 4 runs to the Phils on 2 hits and 6 walks in the first inning? and umpire Bill Klem in turn throws him out of the game. Hooks Wiltse relieves and picks up a victory as New York rallies to win? 9 - 6.

1906: Bill Coughlin is the second Tiger within a month to steal second base? third base? and home in a game; he does this in the 7th inning against Washington during a 13 - 4 romp. Pitcher Bill Donovan did it on May 7th. Washington ties the game at 4 apiece? but the Tigers score 9 in the last 2 innings to win. Charley O'Leary has a homer for Detroit.
Ty Cobb would later accomplish the feat 4 times.

1915: Ty Cobb steals home in the 9th inning of 3 - 0 Detroit win? the only steal of home that late in a game in his career. Yankee pitcher Ray Caldwell is so angry at the safe call he throws his mitt in the air and is promptly ejected by umpire Silk O'Loughlin. It is Cobb's second steal of home while Caldwell is on the mound (the first was on May 12th? 1911).

1920: In St. Louis? the Cardinals beat the Cubs? 5 - 1? as Grover Alexander loses after 11 wins. Bill Doak is the winner and Rogers Hornsby leads the Cards' offense with 2 triples over the left fielder's head. After the game Alexander calls Hornsby "the greatest hitter I've ever had to face. I have tried to fool him every way possible? but it just cannot be done." Alex will be 27-14 for the 5th-place Cubs? and his 1.91 ERA will be the only one in the league under 2.00.

1925: With a speedy triple, the 275th of his career, the Tigers' Ty Cobb became the first player in MLB history to record 1,000 extra-base hits 95 years ago today.

1935: Dizzy Dean? annoyed by what he perceives as poor fielding behind him? berates his teammates in the dugout in full view of the fans and writers. Rip Collins and Joe Medwick start arguing back and Frank Frisch and Pepper Martin step in before any fights start. Dean shows his frustration by lobbing the ball in to Pittsburgh batters and finally leaves in the 7th to a smattering of boos with the Cardinals down? 9 - 3. They score a pair to lose? 9 - 5.

1936: The Tigers score 10 runs in the 3rd and 6 in the 5th en route to a 18 - 9 thrashing of the A's. Philadelphia scores 6 in the 9th but still comes up a bit short. Mickey Cochrane belts an inside-the-park grand slam in the 3rd and collapses after running it out and is replaced. Manager Cochrane will not be in the lineup as a player until July 15. Elden Auker goes the distance for Detroit and might have had a shutout except for 4 errors. The A's misplay 6.

1953: At Chicago? Mickey Mantle's homer in the 4th? off Billy Pierce? gives the Yankees a 5 - 0 lead? but Chicago comes back to tie. Mick's leadoff single in the 10th inning ignites a New York rally? and they win 9 - 5.

1957: In Chicago? Billy Pierce of the White Sox wins, 1 - 0, in a 10-inning masterpiece before 38?490? against the Red Sox.

2018: In a doubleheader split with the Tigers, the Yankees' huge asshole Aaron Judge sets a record by striking out 8 times, including five times in the nitecap. The twin bill is played on what was supposed to be an off day for both teams, to make up games wiped out by foul weather in April.

2019: The Detroit Tigers drafted Ryan Kreidler in the 4th round of the 2019 amateur draft. Player signed June 19, 2019.

2022: The rule preventing position players from pitching in a close game is invoked for the first time when Crew chief C.B. Bucknor objects to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts calling on OF Zach McKinstry to pitch the 9th inning gainst the Mets with his team trailing, 9 - 4. The rule, adopted before the 2020 season but not implemented until this year due to the upheavals caused by the coronavirus pandemic, states that a team cannot use a position player on the mound unless there is a difference of six or more runs between the two teams. Roberts is thus forced to use a real pitcher, Evan Phillips, to pitch the final inning. In spite of the rule, the practice of using such "mystery pitchers" is continuing undiminished, with teams even resorting to them when they have built a huge lead late in the game, in order to rest their bullpens, something that was completely unseen before the decade started.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Sports journalists are winding up with stories that may happen within the next 1-2 months as the trade deadline looms. Anticipating which teams may be buyers or sellers and which players will be in the highest demand.

One of those being mentioned is Detroit Tigers? reliever, Alex Lange. He is currently one of MLB?s best, sporting a 3-0 record, a 1.16 ERA and an incredible .900 WHIP (through Thursday?s games). He was just named reliever of month for May.

Adding to this is Lange?s MLB minimum salary (through the next 2 years) although the Tigers could reward him with a raise before then.

Potentially, Detroit could get quite a bit for him. He will presumably be in high demand by teams looking to strengthen their bullpens esp. for playoff runs.

Should the Tigers trade him so they may fill in several holes or to help resolve their thin starting pitching? Let?s assume that if you say ?yes?, the return would be an acceptable one.

Or is it time for the Tigers to stop selling off their players and start keeping their good ones?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, we encourage responding to other posters.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Should the Tigers trade Alex Lange?

1. Yes

2. No

June 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1916: In Cleveland, Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox shuts out the Indians, 5 - 0, on five hits, and has now thrown 24 straight scoreless innings. He is 2 for 3 at the plate.

1923: Birmingham (Southern Association) purchased Roy Moore from the Detroit Tigers.

1936: Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,700th consecutive game, as the Yankees beat the Indians, 4 - 3. By May 2, 1939 when Gehrig takes himself out of the Yankee's lineup he will have set a ML record of 2,130 consecutive games played.
A record that will be broken by Cal Ripken's 2,632.

1948: Richie Ashburn of the Philadelphia Phillies hits safely for the 23rd straight game in a Phillies 6 - 5 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, setting a 20th century National League record for a rookie. Benito Santiago will hold the record by century's end.

While Stuart is perhaps the first major leaguer to literally clear the wall, mention must be made of both Negro League great Josh Gibson, who did it twice, in 1930 and 1946, and Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby, who actually hit the flagpole on April 24, 1924.
Biederman continues: "Stuart faced Glen Hobbie with Smoky Burgess aboard and rifled a shot straight over George Altman's head. Altman raced back and watched the flight of the ball. It disappeared over the 457-foot mark on the centerfield fence, longest part of Forbes Field. Nobody could quite accurately estimate how far the ball traveled and by how far it cleared the wall. Altman guessed 25 to 30 feet but Walt Moryn, who had a side view of the ball from left field, went on record that the ball cleared the wall by about 40 to 50 feet."

PUTTING IT ALL INTO CONTEXT. Good read.
Totally Tigers

Last week I promised that we would address all the injuries happening to pitchers. Today, we?ll start off the discussion in a 2-part blog.

However, the original topic concerning the increasing number of Tommy John surgeries will wait for Thursday, so please save your comments about that for then.

We?re pivoting slightly because of a just-released study about what is going on this year with pitcher injuries.

Injuries are up across all of MLB, esp. among starting pitchers. And it?s noticeable.

Noticeable enough that MLB is investigating.

Many fans have pointed out the injuries with the Tigers. Going so far as to immediately pin the blame on Chris Fetter.

Chris, btw, is probably having nightmares about his decimated staff.

But it?s not Fetter. It?s not even the training and conditioning staffs. And it?s not the Tigers.

It?s???

?.. the pitch clock......
