He ends up kicking the bench and breaking his toe, sidelining him for two weeks.

1925: 21-year-old Lou Gehrig starts a game for the New York Yankees when regular first baseman Wally Pipp is hit in the head during batting practice and complains of a headache - in fact a concussion. Gehrig collects three hits in five at-bats, helping the Yankees to an 8 - 5 victory over the Washington Senators. Gehrig will go on to play in a major league record 2,130 consecutive games, a record since broken by Cal Ripken with a streak of 2,632.

He is the third fastest pitcher to the mark, needing 1,837 2/3 innings, after only Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson. Max Scherzer is about to catch him, however, as he only needs 19 Ks to reach the mark while having pitched 100 fewer innings than Clayton.
The Dodgers win the game, 2 - 1, in 12 innings, while recording a team-record 26 strikeouts and both teams combine for a National League record 42 whiffs.
Cody Bellinger homers in the top of the 12th for Los Angeles, while winner Kenley Jansen has now struck out 36 batters without issuing a single walk this year, a major league record.

2 shy of the all-time mark for an extra-inning game, but it's the Cubs who break through with 6 runs in the top of the 14th, highlighted by Albert Almora's two-run double off Buddy Baumann, to win, 7 - 1. Luke Farrell pitches 5 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Tigers haven?t had a great week considering the newest injuries to players both at the MLB and minor league levels. Some of them surprising, some of them not. But all of them will have some impact on how the Tigers perform for part or the rest of the year as well as next year.

But do all injuries carry the same amount of impact on a team? No, especially when it comes to starting pitchers and players that the team is building around vs certain positional ones.

In Detroit?s case, out of the 5 most problematic injuries they currently have, 4 of them are to starting pitchers. An outfielder joins them in this list of injuries that may not easily go away or create problems of a new kind.

2018: The Detroit Tigers signed Junichi Tazawa as a free agent.

2019: The Detroit Tigers drafted Riley Greene in the 1st round (5th pick) of the 2019 amateur draft. Player signed June 5, 2019.

2020: Plans to start the MLB season in early July are deadlocked, as the owners reject the Players' Association counter-offer of a 114-game schedule extending into November. They had earlier proposed an 82-game season, with players taking on additional salary cuts. The owners' objections are two-fold: they claim that they will lose money with every game played, and they fear that a second deadly wave of the pandemic will hit North America in the fall, just as the more lucrative postseason games are to be played.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Joey Wentz made the Opening Day roster this year due to an injury to Michel Lorenzen. He stayed on the roster as Matt Manning and Spencer Turnbull also hit the IL.

Wentz has had a rough going. In 11 appearances, he has 1 win and 5 losses. His WHIP sits at 1.68 and his ERA is down slightly to 7.28. His last game showed improvement in all the important stats.

In 2022, he had 7 starts and finished with a 2-2 record, .303 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.

A. J. Hinch has stated that Wentz will remain in the rotation while they work things out to get him going again. But realistically, the Tigers have lost so many starting pitchers that they are hard-pressed to bring up someone else.

Joey was drafted by the Braves in 2016 and traded to the Tigers in 2019. He?s had experience for parts of 2022 and 2023 and has only started 18 games. He?s 25 years old.

What are your expectations about Wentz?

What are your expectations about Joey Wentz so far?

1. Too early to tell how he will turn out.

2. Let Chris Fetter and Robin Lund make him a priority project this year.

3. He is pretty much who he currently is.
