Webvideo Highlights of the Lions win over the saints.

The Lions have now won seven of their last eight games, their best bit of football since finishing the 1995 season with seven wins out of eight.
The Lions improved to 8-4 with the win, and haven’t lost since an Oct. 30 game against the Houston Texans.

Matthew Stafford has been the league's most clutch quarterback in the fourth quarter, but was hot from the start in this one.
He hit on 16 of his first 17 passes for 149 yards, including 13 in a row during one stretch, a team record -- and finished 30 of 42 passing for 341 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions, with a 111.3 passer rating, and the sixth time this year Stafford has a rating of 100 or better.
Stafford had 3 runs for 22 yards. Stafford now with 178 rushing yards on the season, has already eclipsed his career high with four games remaining.

Theo Riddick's second-quarter touchdown catch was his fifth of the season. He entered the game leading the league's running backs with four.

Running back Dwayne Washington left the game with an ankle injury and nickel Quandre Diggs suffered a shoulder injury. Neither returned.

The Lions held the Saints on four straight third downs early in the game and forced three Brees turnovers.
Glover Quin intercepted a Brees pass intended for Brandin Cooks on the Saints’ first possession of the second half,
Tavon Wilson tipped an interception to himself with just over five minute to play to clinch the Lions’ victory,
Miles Killebrew had his first career interception on Brees’ heave to the end zone on the final play of the game.

Tate, who burned the Saints for two touchdowns last year, led the Lions with eight catches on 10 targets for 145 yards, and was the third time in his past four games he had at least 75 yards receiving and the seventh time in the past nine games he’s done that. It was Golden's 10th career 100 yard game and he reached 5,000 career receiving yards.

Todays game was the first game that the Lions have not trailed in the fourth quarter this year, and was the first time this season the Lions game didn’t end within one score.

Matt Prater kicked a career high five field goals.

LIONS END DREW BREES' HOME TD STREAK.
In New Orleans' 28-13 loss to Detroit, Brees failed to throw for a score. That ended his NFL-record streak of 60 consecutive home games with a TD pass. (ESPN Stats & Info).

The Lions outgains the Saints 422 yards to 369, and also controlled time of possession, 36:52 to 23:08 while running 67 plays to New Orleans' 57.

The victory was Detroit's first in a road game following Thanksgiving since 1974, snapping a streak of 22 losses in such games.

Glover Quin finished with 5 tackles, 2 passes deflected and the pick.

Detroit held five straight opponents to fewer than 21 points, a team best since 1991, but there was a thinking that might be a product of the opposition.
Minnesota (twice), Houston and Jacksonville aren't exactly the New England Patriots. But then they did it to New Orleans' top-ranked offense too -- and that's despite playing without either of their top two linebackers in DeAndre Levy and Tahir Whitehead.

The Lions went a 48th straight game without a 100-yard rusher, and a couple drives died because of the unreliability of the ground game.

The Saints didn’t cross the 50 until midway through the second quarter, when Tommylee Lewis busted off a 24 yard punt return.

The Lions outscored the Saints in all four quarters on Sunday by leading them in the following categories:
Passing yards, 341-326
Rushing yards, 85-50
First downs, 24-20
Time of possession, 36:52-23:08
Fewer penalty yards, 39-83
Fewer turnovers, 0-3

The Detroit Lions may not say it, but they needed a win like this -- without the requisite Matthew Stafford fourth-quarter comeback and trailing in the fourth quarter. Detroit had one of its best performances all year and put itself in position to be legitimate contenders in the NFC.

SAINTS HAVE BEEN GENEROUS TO GOLDEN TATE.
His 66-yard score today was the third touchdown of 65 yards or longer in his career. Two of those scores have come against the Saints. (ESPN Stats & Info).

Who deserves the most credit for this win? Stafford, Tate, Quin, Prater?
Teryl Austin.
In fact, when the Lions’ defensive coordinator goes on head coaching job interviews after the season, he just needs to roll tape of this game and drop the mic. It was singularly spectacular.
Matthew Stafford might have played his best game of the year, when you consider how much was riding on this game and playing on the road.
But the win doesn’t happen without Austin’s defense pulling off a huge upset and shutting down the NFL’s No. 1 offense — all without any of his starting linebackers and using a still-hampered and still-sackless Ziggy Ansah.
This year, life gave Teryl Austin lemons. On Sunday, Austin took those lemons, stuffed them into a sock and beat the Saints with that sock until he juiced the lemons and made lemonade.

A’Shawn Robinson has now deflected (6) passes on the season.

According to the Fox broadcast the Lions lead the league in fewest missed tackles (41).

The only games where Stafford was more accurate in the first half were last season against the Saints, when he had a career-best 92.3 completion percentage (12 of 13) and against the Bears in 2014, when he completed 22 of 26 in the first half (84.6 percent).
The Lions have won all four games in Stafford’s career where he has completed more than 82 percent of his passes in his first half.

Why? Being up 12 or 13 makes little difference with 11 minutes left.

Difference between 13 and 14 is huge. Textbook time to go for two.

It was an awful decision lol. Why? Kick the fucking XP and go up 13. Now you're up by a TD and 2 FGs. Miss it and a TD 2 FGs for the other team gets them the lead. It wasn't textbook, it was idiotic. Don't chase points....

12 points = 2 TDs takes lead
13 points = 2 TDs takes lead
14 points = 2 TDs ties.

Field goals are irrelevant at this point because there isn't enough time to get three sustained drives. I don't know where you're getting "up by a TD and a FG"...that's only 10 points? Explain it to me please.

Oops...my bad. I meant "TD and 2 FGs". I would rather not chase points in that situation. Take the XP and go up 13. Our D was already playing well enough. Going for 2 , I get it, but i don't like it there in that certain situation. Go up 13 and lock down that D. Even though we'd be forcing the Saints to score TDs, I would still feel more comfortable with the ball out of Brees' hands as much as possible.

Here is a good basic book for you. Might help you. Its from the complete idiots guide to football. It's based on a chart from Dick Vermeil back in the 70s.

https://books.google.com/books?id=g...on when you are two touchdowns behind&f=false

Since 2015, Matt Stafford has thrown 41 TD 0 INTs in the Red Zone.

Matthew Stafford's last two trips to NOLA.
⚫️ 52/67 (77.6%)
⚫️ 595 yards
⚫️ 5 TD
⚫️ 0 INT
⚫️ 128.5 rtg
⚫️ 2 wins
⚫️ 1 dance

At the end of Sundays game, the Lions' defense will have allowed fewer points since Week 7 (98) than anyone but the Ravens (92).
