I hate talking bad about Gibby in the booth because of his Parkinson's but his slow talking drives me nuts.

As expected, the company that owns Bally Sports is about to file for bankruptcy. Bally has been tightening its budget over the past 2 years and this may have been a factor in the departure of the Detroit Tigers' Jack Morris.

This potentially means that the Tigers could lose significant income from tv rights. Diamond, which owns Bally, only has 1/4th the cash on hand to pay teams what they are owed. A streaming option per game that was discussed last year is too late to enact.

It's unclear how much revenue the Tigers will lose if contracts are terminated. Other teams are expected to take huge hits. The Tigers recently signed a 10-year contract w/Bally. The old contract paid them $50mill/year. The new one is speculated to be as much as $100mill/year.

There are six members of the Tigers' broadcast team in 2023: Shepard (play-by-play), Monroe (primary in-game analyst), Kirk Gibson (in-game analyst), Dan Petry (primary studio analyst), Maybin (studio analyst) and Jones (studio analyst).

Petry and Maybin will rotate into the TV booth as in-game analysts.

Monroe is scheduled to work approximately 130 games, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, followed by Petry (approximately 100 games), Gibson (about 40 games), Maybin (about 30 games) and Jones (about 15 games). Monroe has been assigned around 100 games as the in-game analyst and about 30 games as the pregame and postgame studio analyst.

Bally Sports Detroit recently named their tv broadcast crew for the 2023 season. They will be led by Matt Shepard and Craig Monroe with secondary analysts Kirk Gibson, Todd Jones, Cameron Maybin and Dan Petry.

All but Shepard are former Tiger players. Kirk Gibson remains a member of the Front Office but it?s unclear what his responsibilities are now under a new leader. Nevertheless, he draws a paycheck from the Tigers which could be considered to be a conflict of interest given his broadcasting responsibilities.

But does having a majority of the broadcasters as former Tigers helpful or hurtful? Does their knowledge of the game and the team outweigh giving frank assessments of what they see on the field?
How should the broadcast team be assembled?

How should the Tigers' broadcast team be assembled?

1. Keep it as it is currently constructed w/5 former Tigers.

2. Have no more than 3 former Tigers to keep it balanced.

3. Have only 1-2 former Tigers broadcasting.

4. Have former Tigers as guests but not as broadcasters.

I listen to the radio casts on MLB app. I like Dickerson and Price (when he's there). Looking forward to another season of "virtual theatre" on the diamond.

The Tigers? struggles and last place finishes have been mirrored by their tv broadcast crew. Ever since Mario Impemba and Rod Allen were banished in 2018, the Tigers have ranked last in MLB team tv broadcasting teams for the last 4 years.

Things will definitely not be getting better this year between Bally?s parent company about to declare bankruptcy and the departure of Jack Morris.

But how much, as fans, are you willing to tolerate? At what point do you need another option? At what point do you need to insist on better quality?

Would you be willing to pay a little more to watch the games if you were guaranteed better broadcasters? Would you be willing to cut the cord and purchase MLB TV?s package where you could watch the opposing teams? broadcasters instead?

Would you pay more to watch a better team of the Tigers' tv broadcasters?

1. No.

2. Yes.
