SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers
Casey Mize will be a free agent at the end of this season. Currently, he has some of the best stats on the starting rotation – #1 in ERA and #2 in WHIP (but almost tied for #1 with Tarik Skubal).
He was the Tigers #1 draft pick and #1 overall in MLB back in 2018.
Mize has had 7 years with the Tigers but only 3 of them so far as full seasons. Injuries, especially to the hamstrings, have been a yearly event.
The Tigers will lose the majority of their starting rotation after this year. Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Justin Verlander and Mize will be gone in 2027. Only Framber Valdez and Keider Montero will be back. Technically, so will Reese Olson and Jackson Jobe but they’ve yet to be tested after having their arms surgically repaired.
The Tigers go through an average of 11-12 different starting pitchers per year.
Should they extend Mize beyond this year? He just turned 29 last month and is earning just over $6 mill. His agent is
not Scott Boras.
Logically, he’d be looking for a 4-5 year contract.
Should the Tigers extend Casey Mize?
1. Yes, extend him.
2. No, it's time to move on.
