2020 - 2021 Free Agents and Offseason Moves

The Tigers added Jose Urena to their rotation mix earlier in the offseason, but they might not be done yet. ?We?re definitely looking for more pitching as we speak. I think at least one more starter would be ideal,? general manager Al Avila said Tuesday. The right-handed Urena was mostly a starter as a Marlin from 2015-20, but he could wind up in a bullpen role with the Tigers, Avila noted. For now, Urena?s a candidate to join Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull and Michael Fulmer in Detroit?s starting staff. Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Daniel Norris and Tyler Alexander are also among in-house possibilities to rack up starts this year.

SO YOU WANT TO BE THE GM?
Totally Tigers

Once again, readers get a chance to make their own decisions about the Tigers. So You Want to Be the GM? offers you that opportunity.
The segment tests our readers in determining how they would handle decisions as the General Manager. So here is your next assignment. Let?s get to it!
(Comments may be extended for this segment, but please do not exceed 8 sentences in your response).

The Tigers signed former Oriole Renato Nunez to a minor league free agent deal, while former Tiger CJ Cron signed a minor league free agent deal with the Rockies. Both players will compete for the starting job at first base with their respective teams.
If you were the GM, which one of these 2 players would you have signed if they were both interested in Detroit?

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.
So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.
Today, we center the discussion on the impact that the new manager and coaches will have on the team?s performance.
As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

Over the past week, the 3 major baseball projection sites forecast the Tigers upcoming season performance using statistical analysis.
They estimate that Detroit will lose anywhere from 89-105 games this year.
But should we solely place the responsibility on players? What about the manager and coaches? Do they make a difference? And if so, how much?
A. J. Hinch and his new coaches are receiving very positive reviews from both the local and national media for their ?hit the ground running? style, attention to detail, communication and in-depth analyses with players well before the start of spring training. Even Miguel Cabrera, infamous for not returning calls in the off-season, has been talking to them and sending in videos of his workouts.
So what say you, Tiger fans? Will Hinch, Fetter, Lombard et al maximize the talent they are given? How much of a factor will they be in improving the team?

What level of improvement do you believe will be seen?
1. Significant

2. Moderate

3. Same as last year

4. Worse than last year

5. No difference at all

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 96: Preseason roundup with Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic Detroit. 56 minutes
The BYB staff talks baseball from a Tigers perspective.

With spring camp underway and Mr. Stavenhagen, the Tigers reporter for The Athletic Detroit, days away from a flight to lovely Lakeland Florida to cover them, he joins us for a preseason conversation about the 2021 Detroit Tigers.

This is a pretty wide-ranging, state-of-the-organization conversation, but we start off discussing some of the interesting small scale additions like Nomar Mazara and Julio Teheran while also lamenting the lack of any major moves this offseason. The 2021 Tigers do feel different as AJ Hinch and his coaching staff make their presence felt, and Cody talks about the contrasts with Ron Gardenhire?s staff, but we appear set for another year in a holding pattern hoping for a lot of player development.

We?ll talk through the pitching staff, the looming final acts of Daniel Norris, Matt Body, and Michael Fulmer in the organization, and what constitutes progress in another season where the team is largely treading water. The need for the young pitching prospects to start establishing themselves, at least, is very clear as well. Finally, we consider the farm system and the meager depth in mid-tier prospects, particularly on the pitching side, that informed the Tigers collection of veterans they?ll invite to camp on minor league deals. Finally we discuss a few key players and our hopes for a farm system that needs to show major improvement in 2021.
