2020 - 2021 Free Agents and Offseason Moves

Don't be fooled, all of those big money decisions were Mr I's. He was mortgaging he future for a ring. I don't blame him...he knew his days were numbered.

I don't think it was because his days were numbered he just loved the Tigers and wanted to win. What owner doesn't. At least that's what an owner should be wanting.

It appears that he really didn't love them very much from 1992-2005, almost always towards the bottom of the league in spending, bottom 5-10 most years.

2004 he turned 75. He took the payroll up to mid range (around 15 for a few years)

He really opened the checkbook in 2008 until the day he died (Tigers probably #4 in overall spending over that timeframe only behind NYY, Bos, & LAD)

When asked why doesn't he spend like he does on the Red Wings he responded and I'm paraphrasing because I don't remember the exact quote but 'when they show they can win some I'll spend more money'.

looks like his son is doing the same.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 95: Uncle Al?s discount boutique. 67 minutes.
The BYB staff talks baseball from a Tigers perspective.

Welcome back Tigers fans. We didn?t get the big deal we were hoping for this offseason, but as the yearly scramble for odds and ends hits high gear, GM Al Avila and the Tigers have added some interesting names that will at least be solid projects for the new coaching staff.

We?ll talk Jonathan Schoop, Renato N??ez, and Nomar Mazara, and how the roster is shaping up overall. Finally, we?ll talk about MLB?s attempt to de-juice the baseball, and offer wise alternatives to make the game a more watchable product on the field, as well as a few ridiculous ones. We?re just days away from pitchers and catchers reporting, so while it?s still frigid in the northern realms, we can feel the first faint rays of sunshine as the 2021 baseball season gets underway.

Locked On Detroit Tigers Podcast: Is Nunez The Guy? 20 minutes.
Last show of the week!
The Tigers signed Renato Nunez. Is he set the be the starting first baseman?
Also, PECOTA predicted the Tigers will finish last in the AL Central again. Is that fair?
Also, the Tigers signed Nomar Mazara. We'll talk about that on Monday!

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.
So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.
Today, we center the discussion on all of the Tiger moves this off-season.
As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

So far this off-season, the Detroit Tigers have signed to major league contracts:
Akil Baddoo (Rule 5 draft)
Robbie Grossman
Jonathan Schoop
Jose Urena
Wilson Ramos
Nomar Mazara

They have also added these minor league contracts, with invitations to spring training:
Greg Garcia
Dustin Garneau
Ian Krol
Renato Nunez
(and others)

The Tigers were one of MLB?s most active teams this off-season. It?s a year in which other organizations are slashing payrolls and making minimal changes to their rosters due to historic revenue losses, the uncertainty of having fans in the stands for 2021 and other pandemic-related factors.

Detroit is not expected to have a much better year with another last place finish in their division and 95 losses projected by PECOTA. Most analysts believe it will be another 2-3 years before they reach .500. They have a number of highly-regarded prospects in their farm system with expected MLB arrivals in
1-3 years. However, they still have a number of holes to fill in the meantime.

Given all of these factors, how would you grade the team?s moves so far?
1. Pretty good, considering
2. Better than I thought
3. Average
4. Eh
5. Disappointing
